Open shelves look good until dust, pet hair or a pile of cables becomes the first thing guests see. People searching for “adding doors to bookshelf” usually want one of two things: to put doors on a shelf they already own, or to buy a bookcase that comes with them. The listings we read cover only the second case. It holds four bookcase listings and no door kits, hinges or retrofit hardware, so this guide cannot tell you how to modify an existing shelf. All specs come from the Amazon listing data. We have not tested these products.

  • To add doors to a shelf you already own: the listings does not cover this. Ask the shelf maker or a carpenter, and measure your own sides and back before buying any hardware.
  • To buy a bookcase with doors: three of the four listings describe a door (Furinno LUDER, TUTOTAK and Afuly). The fourth, Baveke, has “Behind The Door” in its title but its bullets do not describe a door at all.
  • The Afuly is the only listing that names its door type (two sliding tambour doors). It is also the tallest and widest unit in the set.

Most readers want to close off part of a shelf. The common reasons are dust, visible clutter, and keeping objects out of reach of children or pets. Each reason points to a different kind of door. A cabinet door on a bottom section hides a few items. Tall sliding doors cover more of the shelf but need the unit to be large enough to hold them. Listings do not say whether a door is glass, mesh or solid panel, except where noted below.

Two numbers in this table need a note. The Furinno bullet lists 5 lb for the top shelf, 10 lb each for the second and third, 15 lb for the fourth and 20 lb for the cabinet. Those add to 60 lb, but the same bullet and the spec field say 75 lb total. We show both and do not pick one. The Afuly listing gives 72.2 inches of height in its dimensions field and 72.44 inches in its size field. We use 72.2.

Product notes

Furinno LUDER 5-Tier Bookshelf with 1 Door (B0BWMY1BMF)

  • Pros: The closed bottom cabinet hides the most visible clutter of the four. The listing describes a back panel that keeps items from falling behind. The bullets describe FSC-certified wood.
  • Cons: At 12 inches wide it has little room for large books. Only the bottom section is enclosed. The 60 lb versus 75 lb conflict means you should ask the seller for the correct total before loading it. The material is engineered wood.
  • Skip it if: you want the whole bookcase closed, or you need to store heavy hardcovers on the top shelves.

TUTOTAK 4 Tier Bookcase with Door (B0CRHFKKQJ)

  • Pros: Three open shelves for display and one hidden compartment behind the door. At 15 inches wide and 10.7 inches deep it takes less floor space than the Afuly. The listing says assembly takes about 30 minutes with a graphic manual.
  • Cons: The listing does not state a weight capacity for any shelf. It does not state the type of hinge or the door material. It is engineered wood, and the door is the only closed part.
  • Skip it if: you need a weight figure before you buy, or you need a bookcase tall enough for large volumes.

Afuly 72″ Tall Bookshelf with Sliding Doors (B0GQ3P5WM6)

  • Pros: The listing says the tambour doors slide and need no extra clearance in front of the unit, which matters in narrow hallways. It has two closed compartments and three open tiers. The listing says anti-tip protection and a 180-day after-sales period are included.
  • Cons: At 72 inches tall it needs a secure wall fixing, and the listing does not say how the anti-tip device attaches to different wall types. The listing gives a 6 lb item weight, which looks low for a unit this size, and the listing does not explain it. The shelves are rated at 55 lb each at most.
  • Skip it if: your wall cannot take an anchored tall unit, or you want to store very heavy items in the closed compartments.

Baveke 6 Tier Behind The Door Bookshelf (B0GJP6BDRG)

  • Pros: The listing describes FSC-certified solid wood and a slim 3.94-inch depth. Six tiers give a lot of open storage in a small footprint. It can be fixed to the wall three ways.
  • Cons: The title says “Behind The Door,” but the bullets never describe a door on the unit. Our reading is that it is meant to stand behind a door. The listing does not confirm this. The size is also inconsistent: the dimension field says 67.72 inches tall and a bullet says 56.3 inches.
  • Skip it if: you need a closed or doored bookcase. This listing does not show one.
  1. Which part do you need to hide? A bottom cabinet, a sliding section or a whole unit change the answer.
  2. Width and depth against your wall. The three door units are 9.3 inches deep (Furinno), 10.43 inches (Afuly) and 10.7 inches (TUTOTAK). The Furinno is the narrowest at 12 inches wide, and the Afuly is the widest at 31.5 inches.
  3. Weight per shelf. The listings disagree or leave this out for three of the four units, so confirm with the seller before you load heavy books.
  4. The “Minimum Required Door Width” field. Only two listings show it (Baveke 31.5 inches, Furinno 12 inches). The listings do not define it. We read it as the doorway width needed to bring the unit in, which is our reading and not a listing claim.

Worked example: a 36 in hallway and a stated load

  • Floor left in a 36 in hallway. Furinno at 9.3 in deep leaves 26.7 in (36 minus 9.3). Afuly at 10.43 in leaves 25.57 in, and TUTOTAK at 10.7 in leaves 25.3 in.
  • Door swing. A hinged door on the 12 in wide Furinno cannot be wider than the unit, so it needs up to about 12 in of clear floor in front. Afuly’s sliding tambour doors need no swing room, per its listing.
  • Load. Furinno lists 75 lb in total, but its per-part figures add to 60 lb (5 + 10 + 10 + 15 + 20). Take the lower figure. On the second shelf (10 lb), 6 hardcovers weigh 12 lb, which is 2 lb over (12 minus 10).

Who should skip doors altogether

If you only want to keep dust off a few books, a closed cabinet on a short shelf or a set of cloth bins may do the job for less space. If your room has no clear wall for an anchored tall unit, a low or wall-mounted option may suit you better.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add doors to a bookshelf I already own?

The listings we read includes no door kits or retrofit hardware, so we cannot say which hardware fits which shelf. Measure the sides, back and shelf thickness of your own unit, then ask the maker or a carpenter before buying parts.

What does “Minimum Required Door Width” mean on these listings?

The listings show the field but do not define it. We read it as the doorway width needed to move the unit through a door. That is our reading, not a claim from the listing.

Is a sliding tambour door better than a hinged door?

The Afuly listing says its sliding doors need no extra clearance in front. That is useful in a narrow room. Whether it suits you depends on what you keep inside. The listing does not state a weight limit for the doors.

Can these bookcases work as a child or pet barrier?

None of the listings say so. Do not rely on them for either purpose. The doors are not described as locking.
