Outdoor Dining Bench: Length, Height and Weight Rating

Quick answer

An outdoor dining bench seats more people per foot of table than separate chairs, and a folding one stores flat. The checks that matter are the bench length against your table, the seat height against the tabletop, the weight rating and what the bench is made of. Plastic folding benches are the common low-cost choice; cast aluminum benches are heavier and meant to stay outdoors.

We read three Amazon listings on 2026-10-01: the VINGLI 6 foot folding bench (ASIN B098QBWX2X), the VSOAEIL 6 foot folding bench 2 pack (B0FMR9YR3S) and the C/G patio casa cast aluminum double-seat bench (B08V9D4S56). They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat on any of them, and we do not show prices; check the current price on Amazon. Every number comes from the listings.

Bench length against the table

A bench is only useful if it fits along the table. Both folding benches are about 6 feet long: the VINGLI listing gives 72 by 12.01 by 17.13 inches, and the VSOAEIL listing gives 71.6 by 11 by 17 inches unfolded. The cast aluminum bench is 32.2 inches long, which suits a small table or a spot against a wall, not a long picnic table.

As our own planning estimate, not a standard, allow about 24 inches of bench per adult. A 72 inch bench seats 72 ÷ 24 = 3 adults. The 32.2 inch aluminum bench seats about 1.3 adults by that measure, even though its listing says seating capacity 2. A listed seating capacity of two is possible if the two people are small or friendly.

A worked example with invented numbers. Your picnic table is 72 inches long and you want benches on both long sides. One 71.6 inch VSOAEIL bench per side fits with 72 − 71.6 = 0.4 inches to spare, so the bench will sit flush with the table ends. The 2 pack gives you two benches, one for each side. Buying a single bench gives you seating on one side only.

Seat height against the tabletop

Seat height decides how your knees meet the table. The folding benches are about 17 inches high. The aluminum bench lists a seat height of 16.14 inches. A standard dining or picnic table is often around 29 to 30 inches high, which is our general expectation and not a number from these listings, so the gap from seat to tabletop is roughly 29 − 17 = 12 inches. As our own planning estimate, 10 to 12 inches is a comfortable range for dining.

If your table is a taller bar-height patio table, a bench this low will leave a gap of 16 inches or more and will feel too low. In that case you need a taller stool, not a bench; see bar stools with backs.

Weight rating

The VINGLI and VSOAEIL listings both give a 650 pound maximum. The aluminum bench lists 300 pounds. These are the sellers’ numbers and we have not verified them.

A worked example. Three adults of 200 pounds each total 600 pounds. On a 650 pound rating the headroom is 650 − 600 = 50 pounds, which is 50 ÷ 650 ≈ 7.7 percent. That is not much if someone stands on the bench or sits down hard, so a bench rated for the full load is not a license to fill every seat. On the 300 pound aluminum bench, two adults of 160 pounds total 320 pounds, which is already 20 pounds over the rating. Check whether the rating is for the bench as a whole or per seat; the listings we read do not say.

Material: plastic or aluminum

The two folding benches have an HDPE (high-density polyethylene) top and a powder-coated steel frame, according to the listings. The VSOAEIL listing calls the plastic waterproof and scratch resistant. Plastic does not rot and hoses clean, and it can get hot in direct sun and can fade, which is a general property and not a claim from the listings.

The C/G patio casa bench is cast aluminum, which the listing says is anti-rust and has an antique round-flower pattern. Aluminum does not rust the way steel does and is rigid, and it can also get hot in the sun. A bench like this is meant to stay outdoors all year, which a folding plastic bench is not.

Folding and storage

The VSOAEIL bench folds in the middle with a safety buckle. The listing gives a folded size of 35.8 by 11 by 3 inches, which is about 35.8 × 11 × 3 ≈ 1,181 cubic inches, small enough to store behind a door. The VINGLI listing says the bench is “easy to take and store” and has a lock on the support rod, and comes fully assembled. The aluminum bench does not fold and needs assembly, according to its listing, which mentions a manual and accessories.

If you want to put benches away between parties, a folding bench is the right shape. If you want furniture that stays on the patio, a heavier bench is steadier in wind.

Weight of the bench

The VSOAEIL listing gives an item weight of 28 pounds on the 2 pack page. The aluminum bench weighs 15.6 pounds. The VINGLI comparison table shows several weights for its range, and we could not tell which belongs to the 6 foot bench, so we do not quote one.

A light bench moves easily and can slide on a slick deck. If your bench will sit on a slope or a deck with gaps, check the feet.

Comfort

None of these benches has a back. A backless bench is fine for a meal and tiring after two hours. The cast aluminum bench has a back, with an overall height of 31.5 inches against a seat height of 16.14 inches, which means a back of about 31.5 − 16.14 = 15.4 inches above the seat by our subtraction. Mistakes to avoid

Do not buy a bench shorter than the table side if you want it to seat three. Do not forget the table height. Do not fill every seat to the rating. And do not leave a plastic folding bench in the sun all summer without checking the care notes.

Who should skip an outdoor bench

If you have guests who need a back or arms, chairs are better. If your table is bar height, a low bench will not work. If you need furniture that survives a winter outdoors, check the material and whether the listing says it is weather resistant.
