The best desk accessories for a small space are the ones that take little or no desktop area: things that clip to an edge, sit under the desk, or reuse space the desk already gives up. This guide compares six office accessories, each doing a different job: a supply caddy, cable clips, under-desk drawers, a laptop riser, a headphone hanger and a memo board for the monitor base. Figures come from the Amazon listings as we read them on 2026-10-17. We have not tested any of them. When a listing contradicts itself, we show both numbers and say which one to double-check.

Quick answer

If you only buy one thing, buy the item that fixes your biggest clutter source. Loose pens and tools: the Amazon Basics mesh caddy (Pick 1). Cables sliding off the desk: the smofish magnetic clips (Pick 2). Small items on the desktop: the YOOUSOO under-desk drawers (Pick 3), though they hold only light things. A laptop on the desk: the foldable riser (Pick 4), with a listing that needs checking. A headset on the desk: the APPHOME clamp hanger (Pick 5). Sticky notes taking up room: the Yncotte memo board (Pick 6). If your desk is already tidy, you may not need any of these.

How we chose

We picked six accessories from different jobs rather than six versions of one. For each we looked at what a small-desk owner needs to know before ordering:

  • Desk area used: how much surface the item takes, or whether it takes none.
  • Stated limits: weight, cable thickness, desk thickness.
  • Install method: adhesive, clamp or free-standing.
  • Listing conflicts: we show them, and we do not pick a number silently.

The listings contain marketing claims, such as a reading-comfort percentage on the memo board. We leave those out or label them as the seller’s claim.

  • Eight clips cover a desk, a nightstand and a charger spot

Worked example: what these cost you in desk area

Use your own desk size. As an example, take a 40 x 20 inch desk, which is 800 square inches. These are our calculations from the listed sizes, and they are rough, because a listing does not always say which edge is the base.

  • Mesh caddy: 9.1 x 5.9 = about 53.7 square inches, or 6.7 percent of the desk.
  • Eight clips, using the largest listed face of 0.81 x 0.81 = 0.66 square inch each, about 5.2 square inches total, or 0.7 percent. They would stick on the desk side or the monitor stand rather than lie on the surface, so this is an upper bound.
  • Caddy plus clips: about 58.9 square inches, or 7.4 percent of the desk.
  • Under-desk drawers, the headphone hanger and the monitor-base memo board: no extra tabletop area, with the memo board using space around the monitor base that is already taken.

A second check is the clamp. A desk top of 25 mm (about 1 inch) fits the hanger’s 50 mm limit. A 2-inch butcher-block top is about 51 mm, just over the limit, and would not fit.

A third check is the cable clip. A phone charging cable of 6 mm fits under 7 mm. A thicker laptop power cord of 8 mm would not.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Buying surface-hungry items first. The caddy is the only pick here that takes real desktop area. Start with items that use none.
  2. Ignoring the weight limit on adhesive storage. The YOOUSOO states 8 ounces as its maximum recommendation. Do not store tools or a heavy stapler there.
  3. Trusting a contradictory listing. The laptop riser shows two weights, two laptop-size ranges and two materials. Check these with the seller or skip it.
  4. Measuring only the clamp, not the desk edge. A thick top or an apron under the edge can stop a clamp. Check both.
  5. Adding items without a plan. Six accessories can crowd a small desk faster than one big problem. Our how to maximize space on a small desk guide and the small home office checklist help you decide what is worth keeping.

Who should skip buying these

If your desk looks cluttered because of too many cables, start with our cable management for a small desk guide before buying anything. If the problem is monitor height or surface area, a monitor stand or desk shelf may help more than small accessories. And if your feet do not rest flat, see the desk foot rest post. Small items rarely fix a layout problem.

FAQ

Which accessory uses the least desk space?

The under-desk drawers, the clamp headphone hanger and the monitor-base memo board add no tabletop area by their listings. The cable clips use well under an inch each.

How much can the under-desk drawers hold?

The listing gives a maximum recommendation of 8 ounces. It names pens, notes, earbuds and cables as suitable contents.

Will the cable clips hold a laptop power cord?

Only if the cord is 7 mm (0.28 inch) or thinner, by the listing. Many laptop cords are thicker, so measure yours.

What is the thickest desk the headphone hanger fits?

The listing says desks up to 50 mm thick, which is about 1.97 inches.

Does the laptop riser fit a 17 inch laptop?

The listing conflicts. A bullet says 10 to 15.6 inches and the specs table says up to 17.3 inches. We cannot confirm the larger size, so check with the seller before using a large laptop on it.

Do I need all six?

No. Pick the one that fixes your biggest clutter point and add others only if the desk still feels crowded.

Bottom line

For a small desk, buy by desk area used. The under-desk drawers, the headphone clamp and the memo board add no tabletop area. The cable clips add almost none. The mesh caddy is the one that takes real space, so only add it if you will give up that area. Treat the laptop riser with care until its listing is consistent. Measure your desk edge and your cables first, and check the current price on Amazon.
