What full grain means

A hide is split into layers. The top layer, the grain layer, carries the natural surface with its pores, scars and grain pattern, and the lower layers are splits that are weaker and usually coated or turned into bonded leather. The HMB guide says full-grain uses the entire unsanded top layer and keeps the natural markings, and that aniline and semi-aniline are usually full-grain. Top-grain, or corrected, leather is lightly sanded and coated for uniformity and durability.

So full grain tells you about the hide and not about the finish. The finish decides the care: aniline has none, semi-aniline has a light topcoat and top-grain has a heavy pigment coat.

It says aniline leather needs gentle dry cleaning and professional care for stains, semi-aniline can handle a damp cloth and mild soap, and pigmented top-grain wipes clean easily. For all grades it advises dusting regularly, keeping leather out of direct sun and wiping spills quickly, and it says cracking comes from dryness, so condition leather once or twice a year. Those are one manufacturer’s guidelines, and your sofa’s maker may differ.

The two SIMPLIHOME listings both call the leather full-grain aniline, a Brazilian leather with natural variations in color and texture. The POLY & BARK listing says full-grain pure-aniline or semi-aniline Italian-tanned leather, and its colors vary by option. If you have children or pets, ask which finish your color has.

Worked example: two sofas on one wall

A set gives you a sofa and a loveseat. Say you want them side by side along a 14 ft wall, which is 168 inches. This wall is an example we chose.

The arithmetic is 88.5 + 72 = 160.5 and 168 − 160.5 = 7.5, and 90 + 76 = 166 and 168 − 166 = 2. Neither pair leaves room for an end table or a gap, so they are better placed at right angles in an L or facing each other. The depths are 38 inches for the Morrison and 35 inches for the Livingston. OROA, a furniture retailer, suggests 14 to 18 inches between a sofa and a coffee table and 30 to 36 inches for main walkways, so two sofas facing each other need about 38 + 16 + 24 + 16 + 35 = 129 inches between the walls with a 24 inch table and 16 inch gaps. The 16 and 24 inch figures are our assumptions.

Load and seats

The Morrison bullets say the loveseat supports up to 600 lb and the sofa up to 900 lb, and the Livingston says the same limits. Divide by the seats: 600 / 2 = 300 lb per seat on the loveseat and 900 / 3 = 300 lb per seat on the sofa. These are seller figures for a static load. The Livingston table lists a seat depth of 20.5 inches, which is 0.5 inches under the 21 to 24 inch range for most sofas in POVISON’s sofa-comfort guide, and its sofa has two seat cushions.

Build and cushions

The Morrison and Livingston are described with corner-blocked frames of solid and engineered woods, webbing on the backs and sinuous springs with webbing on the seats. The Morrison’s seat cushion is a high-density foam core wrapped in feathers, with two loose back cushions and two bolsters filled with feather and polyester fiber. The Livingston has two seat cushions on the same construction. The POLY & BARK says its sofa has feather-down cushioning, webbing support, two loose bolsters and kiln-dried solid wood frames with tapered legs.

Furniture Academy says the entryway has to be wider than at least one of a piece’s depth, height or diagonal depth, and the U.S. Access Board gives 32 inches as a minimum clear width at doorways. On the listed sizes the Livingston’s 31.5 inch height clears a 32 inch opening by 0.5 inches, while the Morrison’s depth of 38 inches and heights of 34 and 35 inches do not, so its diagonal depth, which the listing does not give, decides whether it passes. The legs are separate on these sofas, which helps.
