Quick answer
A counter height dining table sits about 36 inches off the floor, six inches higher than a standard dining table, and is used with taller chairs or stools. Sets are popular for small kitchens because the table is often compact and the stools tuck under it. Before buying, check the table height, the seat height of the chairs (listings often leave it out), how many seats are included and how much floor the set needs with the stools pulled out.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a 3-piece set for two with a 35.5 inch table, a 5-piece set for four with a faux marble top and a 5-piece circular set that is bar height rather than counter height. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat at any of them. All numbers come from the listings.
If you want a standard-height small set, see table with chair set and small kitchen table and chairs. For outdoor tall sets, see high top table and chairs for a patio. For chairs in general, see dining chairs.
Counter height, bar height and dining height
The three heights are used loosely by sellers. A standard dining table is about 30 inches high. Counter height is around 36 inches, and bar height is around 42 inches. The listings we read give 35.63 inches for the MOVECOM table, 36 inches for the 5-piece faux marble table and 42.01 inches for the circular set, which is bar height although it may be sold alongside counter sets.
The difference matters because the stools must match. A stool made for a 42 inch bar table will be too tall for a 36 inch counter table.
Match the stool to the table
As our own planning estimate, not a standard, a seat about 10 to 12 inches below the tabletop gives comfortable knee room. A 36 inch table suggests a seat of about 24 to 26 inches, and a 42 inch table a seat of about 30 to 32 inches.
The Emmaline listing gives a barstool size of 18.5 inches deep, 20.09 inches wide and 30 inches high. If the 30 inches is the seat height, the gap to the 42.01 inch table is 42.01 − 30 = 12.01 inches, which fits our estimate. If it is the overall chair height, the seat would be lower and the stool would be too short for the table. The listing does not say, so ask.
Seats, stool width and footprint
The MOVECOM set has two stools, each 15.6 inches wide, which is narrow. The 5-piece faux marble set gives chairs of 17.7 by 19.7 by 39.8 inches and says it seats up to 4 adults. The Emmaline set has four barstools 20.09 inches wide.
To check seating, compare stool widths with table edge. As our own estimate, allow about 24 inches per adult. The 45.5 inch table has 45.5 ÷ 24 ≈ 1.9 places per long side, so two per side fits four chairs of 17.7 inches each (35.4 inches per side, leaving 10.1 inches). The round Emmaline table has a circumference of 3.14 × 31.5 ≈ 99 inches, which gives 99 ÷ 24 ≈ 4.1 places, and four stools of 20.09 inches take 80.4 inches.
Backs, footrests and comfort
Counter stools are used for longer periods when they double as a dining set, so comfort matters. The MOVECOM stools have backrests and footrests and are padded in PU leather. The 5-piece faux marble set has fabric upholstered chairs with slightly curved backs. The listing for the Emmaline set does not describe backs in the text we read.
A footrest matters because your feet do not reach the floor. Without one, the front of the seat presses on the thighs.
Materials and care
The MOVECOM listing describes a waterproof wood grain surface with reinforced metal corner guards on a steel H-frame. The faux marble set describes a thick MDF tabletop with a marble-inspired pattern and fabric upholstered chairs. The Emmaline listing names wood.
MDF with a marble-look coating wipes clean but can chip at the edges. Always follow the seller’s care notes.
Weight ratings
The MOVECOM listing gives 300 pounds for the table and 400 pounds for each stool. The other two listings state no ratings in the text we read. The figures are the sellers’ and we have not verified them.
Delivery and assembly
The MOVECOM set weighs 63.9 pounds and ships with tools included. The faux marble listing does not give a weight. The Emmaline set ships in several boxes, and the listing notes that boxes may ship separately. Check that every box arrives before assembling.
The three listings we read
MOVECOM Space-Saving 3-Piece Counter Height Dining Table Set for 2, retro brown (model CD-US-K00108cr). The listing gives a table of 35.5 by 29.5 inches, an overall size of 35.63 by 29.53 by 35.63 inches, a listed weight of 63.9 pounds, two 15.6 inch wide PU leather stools with backrests and footrests, a steel H-frame, a 300 pound table rating and a 400 pound rating per stool. Good for: a studio or a nook for two where the stools slide fully under the table. Keep in mind: the stools are narrow, and the listing does not give the seat height. The page showed an Add to Cart button and the message “only 3 left in stock,” which can change.
5-Piece Counter Height Modern Dining Table Set, faux marble top and 4 upholstered chairs, beige (seller LSSOAZZVVN). The listing gives a table of 45.5 by 29.5 by 36 inches, chairs of 17.7 by 19.7 by 39.8 inches, an MDF top with a marble-inspired finish, beige fabric chairs with curved backs and seating for up to 4 adults. Good for: a small family that wants a marble look without a large table. Keep in mind: the chair seat height is not stated, and the listing gives no weight rating. The page showed an Add to Cart button and the message “only 20 left in stock,” which can change.
Christopher Knight Home Emmaline Circular Bar Height Dining Set, 5-piece, natural walnut and light beige. The listing gives a table of 31.5 by 31.5 by 42.01 inches, four barstools of 18.5 by 20.09 by 30 inches and assembly required in several boxes. Good for: a compact round bar-height set for four. Keep in mind: it is bar height and not counter height, the listing’s weight of 13.23 pounds cannot be for a full set and the stool height may be overall height, not seat height. The page showed an Add to Cart button and the message “only 2 left in stock,” which can change.
A worked example
These numbers are invented. You have a kitchen area 10 feet (120 inches) wide. You want the table in the middle with the stools on both long sides.
Floor needed is the table depth plus two pull-out zones of 24 inches (our estimate). For the 45.5 by 29.5 inch table, that is 29.5 + 48 = 77.5 inches, leaving 120 − 77.5 = 42.5 inches. For the round Emmaline table, it is 31.5 + 48 = 79.5 inches, leaving 120 − 79.5 = 40.5 inches. Both clear the U.S. Access Board’s 36 inch route yardstick, which is a public-building reference and only a guide for a home.
Seats. The rectangular set seats four with two stools per side, as calculated above. The round set seats four with 99 − 80.4 = 18.6 inches spare around the table.
Heights. The MOVECOM and faux marble tables are about 36 inches, so stools with seats near 24 to 26 inches suit them. The Emmaline table at 42.01 inches needs seats near 30 to 32 inches, and a listed stool height of 30 inches is at the bottom of that range.
The example shows that these sets fit an average kitchen but that height labels do not line up: the Emmaline set is not a counter set.
Red flags in listings
A set called counter height whose table is 42 inches, a stool listing that gives one height with no label, a weight that cannot be right for a full set and a photo that shows more stools than the set includes are signs to ask. Also check whether “5-piece” means a table and four chairs or a table, four chairs and a bench.
Who should skip a counter height set
If anyone at the table has trouble climbing onto a tall seat, a standard-height table is safer. If you have young children, tall stools can be a fall risk. If your room has a low ceiling or a hanging light, a taller table may get in the way. See kitchen table and chairs for 4 for a lower option.
Frequently asked questions
What is counter height?
About 36 inches. A standard table is about 30 inches and bar height is about 42 inches. Check the listing’s exact number.
How tall should the stools be?
About 10 to 12 inches below the tabletop, our planning estimate. For a 36 inch table that is about 24 to 26 inches.
Do counter height sets need a footrest?
Most tall stools have one, because feet do not reach the floor. The MOVECOM stools in the listing we read have footrests.
How much space does a counter height set need?
The table depth plus about 24 inches for each seated side, which is our estimate, and then a route.
Is counter height good for small kitchens?
Often, because the table is compact and stools tuck under. Check the stool widths and the seat heights.
Bottom line
Choose a counter height dining table with chairs by table height, seat height and floor space. Of the three listings above, the MOVECOM is the compact two-seat set, the faux marble set is the four-seat option with no stated seat height and the Emmaline is a bar-height set that needs taller stools. Match the seat height to the table before you order.
