Quick answer
A high top, or bar-height, patio table sits roughly 38 to 43 inches off the ground, taller than a dining table, and is used with stools. It is a good fit for a balcony because the table is often small and the stools tuck under it. Before buying, check the table height, the stool height (which listings often leave out), the floor space including the pull-out zone, and what the materials are rated to handle outdoors.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a 3-piece acacia bar set with two backless stools, a 32 inch folding bar-height table made of plastic, and a 5-piece cast aluminum bar set with a 42 inch round table and four stools. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat at any of them. All numbers come from the listings.
If you want a lower outdoor-style set, see bistro table and chairs. For indoor compact sets, see dinette sets for small spaces and table with chair set. For a round layout, see round dinette table and chairs.
High top, bar height and counter height
The words are used loosely by sellers. A typical dining table is about 30 inches high. Counter height is around 36 inches, and bar height is taller still. The listings we read give a table height of 38.5 inches for the Tangkula and 42.9 inches for the VINGLI folding table. The Darlee listing calls its set a bar set but does not give a height in the fields we read.
The stool has to match. As our own planning estimate, not a standard, the stool seat should sit about 10 to 12 inches below the tabletop. A 38.5 inch table therefore suits a seat of about 26.5 to 28.5 inches, and a 42.9 inch table a seat of about 30.9 to 32.9 inches. The listings do not give the stool seat heights, so ask.
Footprint on a small balcony
A bar table has a small top, which is why it suits a balcony. The Tangkula table is 28.5 inches long by 22 inches deep. The VINGLI folding table is 31.2 inches across. The Darlee table is 42 inches across.
Seats around a round table depend on the circumference, which is 3.14 times the diameter. As our own planning estimate, allow about 24 inches per adult. A 31.2 inch table has a circumference of about 98 inches, which gives 98 ÷ 24 ≈ 4.1 seats. A 42 inch table has about 131.9 inches, which gives 131.9 ÷ 24 ≈ 5.5 seats, so four stools at 33 inches each have plenty of room.
Pull-out space and the walking route
Stools need room behind them. A rough planning zone of ours is about 24 inches from the table edge on each seated side. The U.S. Access Board’s accessible-route guidance uses 36 inches as a minimum clear width for a route and 32 inches at short points such as doorways. That rule is for public buildings, but it helps you leave a path on a balcony.
Materials outdoors
The three sets use three materials. The Tangkula listing names solid acacia wood on a heavy-duty metal frame and describes the surface as splinter-free. The VINGLI listing names HDPE, a high-density polyethylene plastic, with a powder-coated metal frame. The Darlee listing names a cast aluminum frame described as rust-resistant, with an antique bronze powder coat and moisture-resistant polyester canvas cushions.
Wood outdoors usually needs some care, and the listing does not give a care schedule. Plastic and aluminum need little care. If the balcony gets direct weather, choose by the material the seller names and follow their instructions.
Weight ratings
The Tangkula listing gives 400 pounds per stool and 180 pounds for the rectangular table. The VINGLI listing gives 350 pounds for its folding table. The Darlee listing gives no weights in the text we read. The table rating matters if you rest elbows or lean on the table, and 180 pounds is a reminder not to sit on it. These figures are the sellers’ and we have not verified them.
Folding, storing and moving
The VINGLI table folds and, according to the listing, weighs 19.8 pounds in one field and 17.2 pounds in a bullet, which is an inconsistency. A folding table is easy to store in a closet in winter. The Tangkula set is 40 pounds and the stools tuck under the table, which saves space. The Darlee set is a fixed cast aluminum set and is heavier.
The three listings we read
Tangkula 3-Piece Acacia Wood Patio Bar Set, table and 2 stools (model AM12325HM). The listing gives 28.5 by 22 by 38.5 inches for the table, a listed weight of 40 pounds for the set, a solid acacia top, a heavy-duty metal frame, two backless stools with slatted seats and built-in footrests, a rating of 400 pounds per stool and 180 pounds for the table. Good for: a narrow balcony for two. Keep in mind: no stool seat height is given, and the stools have no backs. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
VINGLI 32 inch Cocktail Table, folding round, bar height (model FT957). The listing gives 31.2 by 31.2 by 42.9 inches, an HDPE top and frame, a weight rating of 350 pounds, folding legs and a seating capacity of 4. Good for: a party or a patio where you want a tall table that folds away. Keep in mind: it is a table only, with no stools, and the weight differs between fields (19.8 and 17.2 pounds). From the site owner’s Vietnam delivery address the page said it could not be shipped there, so we could not see an Add to Cart button; that is a geographic limit, not proof of no stock in the United States.
Darlee Santa Barbara 5-Piece Cast Aluminum Patio Bar Set with 42 inch Round Table (model B/201010-5PC-60F). The listing gives a 42 inch round table, four bar stools with beige canvas polyester cushions, a cast aluminum frame described as rust-resistant, an antique bronze finish and an umbrella hole. Good for: a patio for four that wants a full set and shade. Keep in mind: the text we read gives no table height, stool height or weight, and a 42 inch table needs real floor. The page said it could not be shipped to the Vietnam delivery address we used.
A worked example
These numbers are invented. A patio is 10 feet by 10 feet (120 by 120 inches). The table sits in the middle with stools all round.
For the round tables, floor needed is the diameter plus two pull-out zones of 24 inches (our estimate). The VINGLI needs 31.2 + 48 = 79.2 inches, leaving 120 − 79.2 = 40.8 inches, which clears the Access Board’s 36 inch route yardstick. The Darlee needs 42 + 48 = 90 inches, leaving 120 − 90 = 30 inches, which is 6 inches short.
For the Tangkula, put the stools on one long side against the railing. The table is 22 inches deep, so the depth needed is 22 + 24 = 46 inches, leaving 120 − 46 = 74 inches. That is ample.
Now a narrow balcony that is only 72 inches deep. The Tangkula needs 46 inches, leaving 72 − 46 = 26 inches, which is below the yardstick, so a person could reach the stool but not walk past. The Darlee would not fit at all, since 90 inches is more than 72.
Heights: the Tangkula table is 38.5 inches, so stools of 26.5 to 28.5 inches fit our estimate. The VINGLI at 42.9 inches needs stools of 30.9 to 32.9 inches, which are tall stools.
Red flags in listings
A set described as “bar height” with no table or stool height, a weight that differs between the table and the bullets, a table with no stools in a listing titled “set” and cushions described as waterproof with no cushion size are signs to ask. Also check that the set includes the parts in the photo.
Who should skip a high top set
If anyone at the table has trouble climbing onto a stool, a normal-height table is safer. If the balcony is very narrow, a folding table against the railing may be enough. If you need seats with backs for long meals, choose a dining-height set.
Frequently asked questions
What height is a high top patio table?
About 38 to 43 inches in the listings we read. Bar height is taller than counter height, so check the exact number.
How high should the stools be?
About 10 to 12 inches below the tabletop, by our planning estimate. The listings often omit stool height, so ask.
How much space does a bar height set need on a balcony?
The table plus about 24 inches of pull-out space on each seated side, and a route if you can. A 22 inch deep table against a railing needs about 46 inches.
Can I leave a wood bar set outside?
Follow the seller’s care instructions. The acacia listing we read does not give a care schedule, so ask.
Do folding bar tables come with stools?
Not always. The VINGLI listing we read is a table only.
Bottom line
Choose a high top table and chairs for a patio by heights, floor space and material. Of the three listings above, the Tangkula is the compact acacia set for two, the VINGLI is the folding tall table with no stools and the Darlee is the full cast aluminum set that needs the most room. Measure your balcony depth against the table and pull-out zone before you order.
