Why round for a small space

A round table has no corners, so people can squeeze past more easily, and everyone sits the same distance from the center. It also fits an awkward square kitchen better than a rectangle. The trade-off is that a round table seats fewer people per square foot than a rectangle, and the middle is hard to reach on larger sizes.

A round table of 36 inches seats four. The same floor area in a square table would be a little larger, because the square’s diagonal corners stick out. If the room is long and narrow, a rectangle may still suit you better; see small kitchen table and chairs.

Diameter and seats

Seats depend on the circumference, which is the distance around the table edge. Circumference equals pi (3.14) times the diameter. As our own planning estimate, not a standard, allow about 24 inches of edge per adult.

• 31.5 inches: circumference 3.14 × 31.5 ≈ 99 inches, so 99 ÷ 24 ≈ 4.1, which means two comfortably and four tight.
• 36 inches: 3.14 × 36 ≈ 113 inches, so 113 ÷ 24 ≈ 4.7, which means four.
• 42 inches: 3.14 × 42 ≈ 131.9 inches, so 131.9 ÷ 24 ≈ 5.5, which means four with room, or five if one person squeezes in.

So a 36 inch round is the smallest table that seats four by this rule. A 31.5 inch table is labeled 2 to 4 people in its listing, which matches the result.

Pedestal or four legs

A pedestal base has one central column, which leaves room for legs anywhere around the table. A table with four legs can get in the way of a chair at a corner. The 36 inch East West listing names a pedestal table. The 31.5 inch listing has an X-shaped base with steel legs. The 42 inch listing does not say which base it has in the text we read.

If you will seat four people, a pedestal is the easier choice, although it can tip if someone leans on the edge. Ask the seller about the base width.

Drop leaves on a round table

The 42 inch listing is titled “round dining room table with dropleaf.” A drop leaf on a round table is unusual, and the fields we read do not explain how it works or give an open size. If the leaf is meant to add space, you want that number. Ask before you rely on it.

Chair size

Chairs decide the feel of the set. The 36 inch East West listing gives chair dimensions of 19 by 18 by 35 inches (length, width, height). The 42 inch East West listing gives 22 by 18 by 35 inches. Both have wooden seats and are 35 inches high, which suits a long meal but takes more room when pulled out than a stool.

Materials and weight

The 42 inch East West set names Asian wood, a term sellers use for rubberwood, with wooden seats and solid wood legs; the 36 inch set names hardwood and wood. The 42 inch set is listed at 111 pounds, which suggests a solid build, while the 36 inch listing shows a weight of 1 pound, which is a placeholder and not real. The 31.5 inch table is listed at 23.6 pounds, engineered wood with steel legs and a lower storage shelf.

Heavy sets are sturdier but harder to move. A 23.6 pound table can be lifted by one person, which is useful if you need to store it.

From the site owner’s Vietnam delivery address the page said it could not be shipped there, so we could not see an Add to Cart button; that is a geographic limit, not proof of no stock in the United States.

The listing gives a 42 by 42 by 29.5 inch table, chairs of 22 by 18 by 35 inches, an oak finish, Asian wood construction and a listed weight of 111 pounds. Good for: a household that wants the extra elbow room of 42 inches. Keep in mind: the drop leaf is not explained and its open size is not given, and the set is heavy to move. The page showed the same shipping message from Vietnam.

The listing gives 31.5 by 31.5 by 30 inches, a listed weight of 23.6 pounds, engineered wood with a steel X-shaped base and a lower storage shelf. Good for: a studio or a nook where the table might seat two most days. Keep in mind: no chairs are included, and one field shows a tabletop thickness of 24 inches, which is a listing error. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

A worked example

These numbers are invented. A kitchen nook is 10 feet (120 inches) wide. You want a round table in the middle with a route around it.

Floor needed is the diameter plus two pull-out zones of 24 inches (our estimate). Compare with 120 inches, then check against the Access Board’s 36 inch yardstick for a route.

• 31.5 inch table: 31.5 + 48 = 79.5 inches, leaving 120 − 79.5 = 40.5 inches.
• 36 inch table: 36 + 48 = 84 inches, leaving 120 − 84 = 36 inches, which just meets the yardstick.
• 42 inch table: 42 + 48 = 90 inches, leaving 120 − 90 = 30 inches, which is 6 inches short.

So in a 10 foot space, the 36 inch set is the largest that keeps a full route, and only just. If one side of the table sits near a wall, you can use a larger table by dropping one pull-out zone.

Red flags in listings

Weights of 1 pound, a table that is titled round but shows rectangular dimensions, and a title that lists a diameter different from the size field are all signs of a careless listing. One folding round set we came across lists a 47.3 inch round table in the title but a 60 by 31.5 inch size in its fields.

Also check what “dinette” means to the seller. Some use it for a three-piece bistro set with two chairs, and some use it for a five-piece set for four.

Who should skip a round dinette

If you need to seat more than four regularly, a round table of this size is too small; use a larger round table or a rectangle. If your room is narrow and long, a rectangle with a bench is easier to tuck against a wall. If you want to push the table against a wall, a round table wastes the corner behind it.
