They show how one diameter gets sold for different seat counts. We have not tested or sat at any of them. All numbers come from the listings.

Seats per diameter

Seats depend on the circumference, the distance around the edge, which is 3.14 times the diameter. A 47.24 inch table has a circumference of about 3.14 × 47.24 ≈ 148 inches.

• Four seats: 148 ÷ 4 = 37 inches per person.
• Five seats: 148 ÷ 5 ≈ 29.6 inches per person.
• Six seats: 148 ÷ 6 ≈ 24.7 inches per person.

Against our 24 inch estimate, six people fit with less than an inch to spare, which leaves no room for elbows, and chairs with wide arms or backs may not all fit. Four people have room to lean back and pass dishes. For most families, a 47 inch round table is a four-seat table that can squeeze to six for a holiday.

Why the middle matters

A pedestal can tip if a person leans on the edge, and a glass top on a metal column is heavy on one point, so check the base width if you have children. The listings we read do not give the base width.

Glass or laminate

A tempered glass top, as on the 47.25 inch set, is easy to wipe and gives an open look in a small room, but it shows fingerprints and can chip at the edge. The listing describes it as easy to care for. A walnut woodgrain laminate over MDF, as on the other two, is scratch-resistant according to the listing and quieter when plates are set down. The table is listed to support 250 pounds.

Neither is better in every house. If you have young children, a matte laminate may hide marks better than clear glass, though we have not tested these tables.

Chairs around a round table

Chairs around a round table need to be narrow at the front, because the seats point inward. A chair with a wide front or wide arms takes more of the circumference than its listed width suggests. The walnut listings describe rattan-back chairs with a solid wood frame and a beige or olive linen seat, and the glass set describes grey tufted velvet chairs.

The listings we read give no chair widths. If you plan to seat six at the 47 inch table, ask for the chair width. Six chairs at 18 inches wide take 108 inches of the 148 inch circumference, which is fine, but six chairs at 22 inches take 132 inches and will touch.

A worked example

These numbers are invented. A dining room is 12 feet (144 inches) wide and you want the 47.24 inch table in the middle.

Floor needed: 47.24 + 24 + 24 = 95.24 inches. Room left: 144 − 95.24 = 48.76 inches. That is more than the Access Board’s 36 inch route yardstick, which is a public-building reference and only a guide for a home.

In a 10 foot (120 inch) room the same table leaves 120 − 95.24 = 24.76 inches, which is 11.24 inches short of the yardstick, so people would have to turn sideways behind the chairs. In that room a 42 or 36 inch table is a better choice.

Seats: 148 ÷ 6 = 24.7 inches each, as shown above. For comparison, one 42 inch round set for six that we opened is currently unavailable, but its numbers illustrate the point: 3.14 × 42 ≈ 131.9 inches ÷ 6 ≈ 22 inches per person, below our estimate, so six people would be crowded.

The result: a 47 inch round table is a comfortable four-seater in a 12 foot room and a tight six-seater, and it does not fit a 10 foot room with a walking route.

Red flags in listings

A table whose diameter is the same across a 5-piece and a 7-piece set, weights that are identical for four and six chairs, and a photo that shows more chairs than the title are signs to ask. Also watch for listings that give a diameter in the title but a different size in the fields, which happens with placeholder or package sizes.

Check the chair count in the title against the picture before you click order. A “set for 6” may be a table and four chairs with two more sold separately.

Who should skip a round family table

If you seat six every day, a rectangular or oval table gives each person more edge, and a bench can add seats; see dining room table with bench.
