Quick answer
A table with a chair set is easiest to choose by counting the people who eat together most days, not the most you will ever host. A 3-piece set seats two, a 5-piece set seats four and a 7-piece set seats six. Then check the floor it needs: the table depth plus about 24 inches of pull-out space on each seated side, with a walking route left over.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a 3-piece set for two listed at 35.4 inches wide, a 5-piece set for four with a drop-leaf table, and a 7-piece set for six with a butterfly leaf. They show how the size steps up. We have not tested or sat at any of them. All numbers come from the listings.
For round sets, see round dinette table and chairs. For six-seat sets, see dining room table 6 chairs. For a bench instead of chairs, see dining room table with bench. Smaller guides in the same area are small kitchen table and chairs and kitchen table and chairs for 4.
What “set” means
A set is a table plus a fixed number of chairs or stools, sold together. The number in the name, such as 3-piece, 5-piece or 7-piece, counts the table and the chairs. So a 5-piece set is one table and four chairs, and a 7-piece set is one table and six chairs. Some sets use stools or benches instead of chairs, and the count still works the same way.
Buying a set saves matching time. It also means you cannot choose the chair later, and if one chair breaks you may not find a match. If chair comfort matters to you, consider a table alone and dining chairs bought separately.
Count seats, then the table
A rule of our own, not a standard, is to allow about 24 inches of table edge per adult. Divide the table length by 24 for each long side, then add one seat at each end if the table is wide enough.
The 3-piece set is 35.43 inches wide, so the long side seats 35.43 ÷ 24 = 1.5, which means one person per side. That gives two seats. The 5-piece drop-leaf table is listed at 48 by 30 inches, so each long side is 48 ÷ 24 = 2 seats, for four in total. The 7-piece table is 54 inches long, so each long side holds 54 ÷ 24 = 2.25, which rounds down to two, plus one seat at each end, giving six.
Table depth matters in a small room
Depth is the number that changes your floor plan. The 3-piece set is 18.5 inches deep, which is narrow enough for a corner. The drop-leaf table is listed at 48 by 30 by 30 inches, so we treat 30 inches as its closed depth, and the 7-piece table is 32 inches deep. A deeper table gives each person more room for plates but takes more floor.
The U.S. Access Board’s accessible-route guidance uses 36 inches as a minimum clear width for a route and 32 inches at short points such as doorways. That rule is for public buildings, and only a yardstick for a home, but it helps you see whether people can walk behind seated guests.
Leaves, drop leaves and butterfly leaves
Two of the tables have a leaf that changes the size. The 5-piece set has two 9-inch drop leaves that fold down when not in use. The 7-piece set has a butterfly leaf, which folds out of the center of the table. A leaf gives you a small table for daily use and a larger one for guests.
Check the open and closed sizes. The 5-piece listing gives a length of “48/30” in its bullet, and we could not tell from the text which figure is open and which is closed. Ask the seller before you plan a small room around the closed size.
Chair size and comfort
Chairs determine how long people will sit. The 3-piece set has low-back chairs with a listed size of 15.7 by 15.7 by 28.7 inches and footrests on the legs. The 5-piece set has parson-style chairs listed at 24.5 inches long, 19 inches wide and 40.5 inches high, with linen fabric seats and a full back. A full-back chair at 40.5 inches is more comfortable for a long meal than a low-back stool, but it takes more room to see over.
A seat that is 15.7 inches wide is narrower than many people like, and a stool with no back is for quick meals. Choose the chair for how you eat, not only the look.
Materials
The 3-piece set names an MDF top and steel legs. The 5-piece listing names Asian wood, a term sellers use for rubberwood, for the frame and two drop leaves, with linen fabric on the chairs. The 7-piece listing names Asian wood and says it has an oak finish that cannot be removed. MDF is stable and cheaper, while solid wood is heavier and can be refinished.
The three listings we read
HOMCOM Dining Table Set for 2, small space, black (model 835-136V80BK). The listing gives a table of 35.4 by 18.5 by 29.9 inches, two chairs of 15.7 by 15.7 by 28.7 inches, steel legs with footrests, an MDF top and a listed weight of 38 pounds. Good for: a studio, a balcony or a corner for two. Keep in mind: a 35.4 inch table has room for plates but little else, and the chairs have low backs. The page did not show an Add to Cart button from our Vietnam delivery address, and its availability line was blank, so we could not check stock.
East West Furniture NDEN5-OAK-07 5-Piece Dining Set with drop leaf table and 4 linen chairs. The listing gives a table of 48 by 30 by 30 inches with two 9-inch drop leaves, four parson chairs, an Asian wood frame and a listed weight of 52 pounds. Good for: a household of four that sometimes needs a smaller table. Keep in mind: the open and closed sizes are not clearly labeled, and the listing needs assembly. The page showed an Add to Cart button and the message “only 12 left in stock,” which can change.
East West Furniture NOFK7-OAK-W 7-Piece Dining Set with butterfly leaf and 6 chairs. The listing gives a 54 by 32 by 29 inch table with a butterfly leaf, six chairs with wooden seats, an Asian wood build, an oak finish and a listed weight of 156 pounds. Good for: a family of five or six who wants one set. Keep in mind: it is heavy and needs assembly, and the listing does not give the chair dimensions in the text we read. From the Vietnam delivery address the page said it could not be shipped there; that is a geographic limit, not proof of no stock in the United States.
A worked example
These numbers are invented. A dining area is 9 feet (108 inches) wide. The table will sit across it with seated people on both long sides.
For each set, the room width needed is the table depth plus two pull-out zones of 24 inches (our planning estimate). Then subtract from 108 to find the route left.
The 3-piece set: 18.5 + 48 = 66.5 inches needed, leaving 108 − 66.5 = 41.5 inches. That clears our 36 inch yardstick.
The 5-piece drop-leaf set, using the 30 inch closed width: 30 + 48 = 78 inches, leaving 108 − 78 = 30 inches, which is 6 inches short of the yardstick.
The 7-piece set at 32 inches deep: 32 + 48 = 80 inches, leaving 108 − 80 = 28 inches, which is 8 inches short.
So in a 9 foot room, only the small set keeps a comfortable route all around. The four- and six-seat sets would work if one long side sat against a wall, which uses only one pull-out zone: 30 + 24 = 54 inches for the 5-piece set, leaving 54 inches, and 32 + 24 = 56 inches for the 7-piece set, leaving 52 inches.
Red flags in listings
Weights that do not match the size (one 5-piece set we came across in search lists 8.82 pounds for a table and four chairs), an open and closed size with no labels and “set” photos that include extra chairs are all signs to ask. Also check what “piece” means: some sellers count the cushions or the leaf.
Look for the chair dimensions, which are often missing from the main table and buried in a bullet.
Who should skip a set
If you need to seat a varying number, a table with leaves and separate chairs may serve better than a fixed set. If the room is very small, a wall-mounted drop-leaf table and two folding chairs save more floor. If you already have good chairs, buy only a table.
Frequently asked questions
How many chairs come in a 5-piece set?
Usually four chairs and one table. A 3-piece set is one table and two chairs, and a 7-piece set is one table and six chairs.
How big a table do I need for four people?
About 48 inches long if two people sit on each long side, using our planning estimate of 24 inches each. A shorter table works if you use the ends.
What is a drop-leaf table?
A table with hinged side panels that fold down when not in use. One set we read has two 9-inch drop leaves.
What is a butterfly leaf?
A leaf stored inside the table that unfolds from the center to make the table longer. One 7-piece set we read has one.
Should I buy a set or separate pieces?
A set saves time and matches. Separate pieces let you choose comfortable chairs and replace one at a time.
Bottom line
Choose a table with chair set by people, then table depth and route. Of the three listings above, the HOMCOM is the compact two-seat set, the East West 5-piece is the drop-leaf set for four and the 7-piece is the heavy set for six. Measure your room width against the depth plus pull-out space before you decide.
