Quick answer
Murphy bed hardware is the moving part of a wall bed: the pistons or springs, the pivot brackets and the folding leg. It does not include the cabinet, the mattress platform lumber or, usually, the mattress. You build the box from plywood or boards, attach the hardware to it and fix the box to the wall studs.
We read three kits on Amazon on 2026-10-01: the Wilding Wallbeds queen and full piston-lift kit, a Tlongxia vertical queen and short queen gas-spring kit, and a Tlongxia vertical twin kit. We have not tested any of them. Every figure comes from the listings, and where a listing contradicts itself we say so. This guide also covers the search “murphy bed kits,” since the two phrases mean the same thing.
What a kit includes and what it does not
- Included, per the listings: lifting pistons or gas springs, pivot posts and plates or brackets, hinges, rotating or folding legs, assembly hardware, and instructions. The Wilding page also lists a cut list and plans; the Tlongxia pages list templates for drilling, wooden cutting lists for 3/4, 7/8 and 1 inch boards, installation videos and a manual.
- Not included: lumber (the Wilding listing says so), the mattress, the finish, and the wall anchors for your wall type.
- You provide: the cabinet or wall frame, a drill, a way to find studs, and a helper.
The lift is only part of the safety picture. In January 2018 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of all I-Semble vertical and horizontal Murphy bed hardware kits sold by Rockler, saying the hardware used to secure the wooden wall enclosures to the wall studs did not provide sufficient bracing support, posing tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children. That recall does not concern the kits below. It shows why the way the box is anchored to the studs matters as much as the lift.
Three kits, side by side
| Listing | Sizes | Hardware size as listed | Load stated | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wilding Wallbeds Murphy Bed Kit, Queen and Full, piston lift | full, queen | 16 x 66.5 x 88 in (also listed 16 x 43.5 x 83 in) | 1,500 lb | not stated |
| Tlongxia Vertical Murphy Bed Hardware Kit, Queen/Short Queen | queen, short queen | 16 x 67 x 86 in | 1,000 lb | 11 lb |
| Tlongxia Vertical Murphy Bed Hardware Kit, Narrow Twin/Twin/Twin XL | twin sizes | 16 x 16 x 81 in | 1,000 lb | 11 lb |
Contradictions to know about. The Wilding listing gives two different size rows, and in a comparison chart on the same page the weight limit is 1,500 pounds for this kit and 2,000 pounds for other kits. The Tlongxia queen kit and the twin kit both list a weight of 11 pounds, which is unlikely for hardware of different sizes, so treat the weight as unconfirmed. The Tlongxia twin listing says it suits mattresses 6, 8, 10 and 12 inches thick, and a range from narrow twin through California king in its bullets, while its title and table say twin sizes. The queen listing lists queen and short queen. Ask the seller which size your kit covers.
A worked example: a queen bed in an 8 foot room
You want a vertical queen Murphy bed on a 96 inch high wall. Our planning assumption is walls with studs 16 inches on center, which is common but must be checked; the queen cabinet is 68.5 inches wide, which is the 67 inch hardware width plus two 0.75 inch side boards.
- Ceiling: the Tlongxia queen hardware is 86 inches high. 96 − 86 = 10 inches left. The Wilding kit at 88 inches leaves 96 − 88 = 8 inches. A cabinet needs a top board and trim above the hardware, so check that the finished box clears the ceiling.
- Studs: a 68.5 inch cabinet spans 68.5 ÷ 16 = 4.3 stud spaces. That means you will hit about 5 studs. The wall brackets should go into studs, not drywall, which is exactly the point of the Rockler recall above.
- Load: the Tlongxia queen kit lists 1,000 pounds. Suppose a mattress of 80 pounds, a platform of 60 pounds and two adults totalling 400 pounds. That is 540 pounds, or 540 ÷ 1,000 = 54 percent of the listed limit. With the Wilding’s 1,500 pounds, it is 36 percent. The limits are the sellers’ claims about the hardware, not about your wall, your lumber or your joints.
- Mattress thickness: the twin kit lists 6 to 12 inch mattresses. The queen listing does not give a thickness range in the text we read; ask before buying a 12 inch mattress.
Building it right
The listings promise quick installs: the Tlongxia says 8 steps and about 20 minutes once the parts are ready, which cannot include building the cabinet. Plan your time around the cabinet, which is carpentry. Use the listed cut list, mark the studs, and anchor the box to the studs with the fasteners the maker specifies. Test the lift empty before you add the mattress, and test it again with weight. If a piston or spring is stiff or one-sided, stop and check the pivot alignment.
Many builders hire a pro for the wall anchoring even if they build the cabinet themselves. That is a reasonable split. The cabinet carries the bed’s weight into the wall.
Safety for children
Wall beds can trap. The recall notice cites entrapment hazards when the enclosure is not braced. Never leave a bed half open, keep children from playing on it, and make sure the bed latches closed. If the kit includes a leg or a strap, use them as the manual says.
Tools, lumber and planning the cut
A kit is only the start of the shopping list. You will need a stud finder, a level, a drill and bits, clamps, a square and a saw or a store that cuts sheets for you. For lumber, the Tlongxia listings give cutting lists for 3/4, 7/8 and 1 inch boards, and the Wilding listing says lumber is not included and ships a cut list and bill of materials. Count the boards before you buy, add a small waste allowance, and check that the board thickness matches the cut list you choose, because the hardware positions depend on it.
Plan the sequence on paper: build the box, lay out the hardware on the platform, test fit the pivots, then raise the box and fix it to the studs. Do a dry run of the lift with no mattress before the finish goes on. Doing the final paint last avoids chipped edges when you fit the hardware.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the stud check. The CPSC recall was about the wall fixings of an enclosure, not the lift.
- Ignoring the ceiling. Hardware 86 to 88 inches tall plus a cabinet top leaves little in an 8 foot room.
- Using the wrong mattress thickness. The twin kit lists 6 to 12 inches; for the others, ask.
- Treating the load as a promise. A 1,000 or 1,500 pound figure is the seller’s claim for the hardware, not for your build.
- Forgetting the room in front. A queen bed reaches about 80 inches from the wall when open, by our assumption of an 80 inch mattress, so a dresser or door within that distance will block it.
Which kit for which job
- Wilding, queen and full: the highest stated load of the three at 1,500 pounds, with plans and a cut list. Read the size rows with care.
- Tlongxia queen: a 20-minute-install claim, templates and cutting lists in three board thicknesses.
- Tlongxia twin: for a single bed or a child’s room; it lists mattresses 6 to 12 inches thick.
See our Murphy bed guide for ready-made cabinets and full-size Murphy beds for sizing.
How to choose
- Pick the mattress size and thickness first.
- Check the kit’s stated size, load and what the box must be.
- Measure ceiling height and find the studs.
- Buy the lumber, then check the cut list.
- Anchor the box to the studs, test the lift, and get help for the lifting.
Frequently asked questions
What is Murphy bed hardware?
The lift, pivots and legs that fold a bed into a wall cabinet. The cabinet itself is built separately.
Are Murphy bed kits and hardware the same?
Yes: the search terms mean the same product.
How much weight can a kit hold?
The listings state 1,500 pounds (Wilding) and 1,000 pounds (Tlongxia). They describe the hardware, not your wall or lumber.
Do I need studs?
Yes. The CPSC’s 2018 recall of one kit maker was over inadequate bracing of the enclosure to wall studs.
Does the kit include lumber or a mattress?
No. The Wilding listing says lumber is not included; none of the three lists a mattress.
