Counter height versus bar height
A counter is about 36 inches high, and a bar is about 42 inches. A stool made for a counter is shorter than one made for a bar. Sellers use the terms loosely, so read the numbers. The three listings we read give seat heights of 24.5 inches, 26 inches and an adjustable 26 to 32.2 inches, which covers counter height and the low end of bar height.
If your surface is between 36 and 42 inches, an adjustable stool may fit better than a fixed one.
Match the seat to the surface
As our own planning estimate, not a standard, a seat about 10 to 12 inches below the top of the surface gives comfortable knee room. A 36 inch counter therefore suggests a seat of about 24 to 26 inches.
Some listings also state a table range. The COSTWAY listing says its 24.5 inch seat matches tables 35 to 39 inches high. The LUE BONA listing says its 26 inch seat fits 35 to 39 inch counters. Those ranges are the sellers’ guidance, and they are wider than our 10 to 12 inch estimate allows, so check your own number.
Seat width and how many fit
The COSTWAY seat is 17 inches wide and the LUE BONA seat is 17.3 inches wide. The BOKKOLIK listing gives a seat width of 33 centimeters, about 13 inches. As our own estimate, allow about 24 inches of counter edge per adult.
On a 72 inch counter, 72 ÷ 24 = 3 places. Three COSTWAY stools take 3 × 17 = 51 inches of it, leaving 21 inches, so three fit with room to slide. Three LUE BONA stools take 3 × 17.3 = 51.9 inches, leaving 20.1 inches.
Backs and footrests
Counter stools are used for longer meals than bar stools, so a back helps. The COSTWAY listing describes an ergonomic backrest and built-in footrests. The LUE BONA listing describes a curved low back and a circular footrest. The BOKKOLIK listing describes a wooden backrest and a built-in footrest.
A footrest matters because your feet do not reach the floor. Without one, the seat edge presses into your thighs.
Swivel and adjustable height
The BOKKOLIK stool swivels, and the listing says you twist the wooden seat to adjust the height from counter height at 26 inches to bar height at 32.2 inches. A swivel seat is easy to turn toward a guest, but it moves when you sit down. An adjustable seat fits two different surfaces.
Adjustment mechanisms add parts that can loosen, and the listing gives no cycle rating. If you only need one height, a fixed stool is simpler.
Material and weight
The COSTWAY stool uses a rubber wood and MDF frame with a linen fabric seat and high-density sponge. The LUE BONA stool uses a rubberwood frame with a 3.5 inch linen upholstered seat. The BOKKOLIK stool uses a copper-colored iron frame with a wooden seat and is fully welded, so it needs no assembly, and it weighs 42.4 pounds for the pair.
The listings give 350 pounds for the COSTWAY, 350 pounds in the LUE BONA specification table but 300 pounds in one of its bullets, and 330 pounds for the BOKKOLIK. The figures are the sellers’ and we have not verified them. If a listing gives two numbers, use the lower.
Floor protection and noise
The COSTWAY listing describes splayed legs. Tall stools can scrape hard floors, so felt or rubber feet help, and the listings we read do not describe foot pads. They also do not say how loud the BOKKOLIK’s metal base is on tile.

A worked example
These numbers are invented. You have three surfaces: a 34 inch kitchen peninsula, a 36 inch counter and a 42 inch bar-height ledge. Using our 10 to 12 inch estimate, the target seats are about 22 to 24 inches, 24 to 26 inches and 30 to 32 inches.
Fixed stools. The COSTWAY’s 24.5 inches fits the 36 inch counter and is 0.5 inch above the 34 inch peninsula’s 22 to 24 range. The LUE BONA’s 26 inches fits the top of the counter range and is 2 inches above the peninsula’s range.
Adjustable stool. The BOKKOLIK’s 26 to 32.2 inches covers the 42 inch ledge, at 30 to 32 inches, and reaches the counter range at 26 inches. It does not reach down to the 34 inch peninsula, which needs 22 to 24 inches.
Width. A 72 inch counter holds three of either fixed pair, as calculated above.
Weight. A 280 pound person is under the COSTWAY’s 350 pounds by 70, the BOKKOLIK’s 330 by 50 and the LUE BONA’s lower 300 pound figure by 20.
The example shows that one stool rarely fits every surface, which is why the stated seat height matters more than the word counter.
Red flags in listings
A seat height field that shows the maximum or the overall height, a table range much wider than the 10 to 12 inch rule, a weight rating that differs between the table and the bullets and a “set of 2” where your counter needs three are signs to ask. Also check whether the backrest is tall enough to lean on.
Who should skip counter stools
If anyone has trouble climbing onto a tall seat, a standard-height table and chairs are easier. If your counter has a deep overhang, stools that tuck under may not fit. If children will sit there, tall seats can be a fall risk. See table with chair set for lower sets.
