Check the load rating of the hanger and the hook before you buy, since the hook must carry the full weight of a watered pot. A flower pot hanger holds a plant above the floor from a hook in the ceiling or wall, and for a small home it frees up shelves and tables entirely. The three kinds we looked at are a 35 in macrame hanger for pots 4 in to 15 in across, a pack of metal chains each 23.6 in long, and a retractable pulley hook that lets you pull a plant down to water it. Keep the lowest part of the plant out of the way of people walking past, and check the head clearance where it will hang.

Why a hanging pot helps in a small room
Floor and table space are the first things to run out in a small home. A hanging plant uses neither. It also uses the empty air near a window, where light is best, and keeps trailing plants from sprawling over furniture.
Hanging plants have a few costs. You have to be able to reach them to water them. They need a secure fixing. And they swing into things if they hang in the wrong spot. This guide covers all three.
Three types of hanger
Macrame hanger
The USLAI model is a macrame hanger, 35 in long, and the title says it fits pots from 4 in to 15 in across. It has a stated capacity of 20 pounds. You set the pot in the cord basket and hang the cords from a single hook.
The advantage is looks. A macrame hanger is soft and fits boho or minimalist rooms. The limit is that it is cord, so it can stretch and wear at the hook over time. Check the knots now and then.
Metal chain
The JOUTYFOR pack contains 8 chains, each 23.6 in long, and the title calls them adjustable. The capacity field says 30 pounds, so check the listing to see whether that is per chain or for a set. A pot normally hangs from three or four chains attached to its rim or to a basket, so check how many chains you need for one pot.
The advantage is strength and adjustability. Chains suit heavy baskets, and the title says black metal. Check the listing for any weather or rust claims before you use them outdoors. The look is more industrial.
Retractable pulley
The Lythor pack has 4 pulley hooks. The listing gives a maximum of 10 kg. Check the page for the minimum weight, because a spring-loaded pulley may not hold a very light plant. The idea is that you hang a plant high up and pull it down to water or feed it, then let it rise again.
The advantage is reach. If a plant hangs from a high ceiling, a pulley saves a ladder. The limit is the weight range: a plant that is too light may not stay put, and too heavy a pot is over the limit.
The hook is the weak point
Most hanger failures come from the fixing, not the hanger. The ceiling hook, the screw and the material it sits in must carry the full weight of the watered pot and the hanger.
- Know the weight. Weigh the pot after watering. Soil, water and the pot itself add up faster than you expect.
- Match the rating. The hanger’s capacity, such as 20 lb for the macrame or 30 lb for the chains, only counts if the hook can match it. Check what your ceiling is made of, and what the hook you use is rated for.
- Find a joist or stud. A hook in bare drywall is the weakest choice. Use a joist or a heavy-duty anchor that is rated for the load, and follow the maker’s instructions.
- Rent with care. Ask your landlord before you drill into a ceiling.
We do not give a safe weight for drywall anchors, because it depends on the anchor and the wall. Read the pack of the anchor you use.
Head clearance: do not hang over the path
A hanging plant is a low-hanging object. The US Access Board’s guidance on protruding objects says that headroom along a circulation path should be at least 80 in, and that objects whose lower edge is between 27 in and 80 in off the floor may stick out at most 4 in into the path. Those are rules for public buildings, but they make a good yardstick for a home. Keep hanging plants out of the walking line.
Worked example: a window corner in an 8 ft room
Say the ceiling is 8 ft, which is 96 in, and you screw a hook into the ceiling. We ignore the height of the hook itself to keep it simple, and we assume the pot sits at the bottom of the hanger.
Macrame hanger, 35 in long.
- Height of the pot bottom above the floor: 96 in minus 35 in equals 61 in.
- Check against the head clearance yardstick of 80 in: 80 in minus 61 in equals 19 in too low for a walking path.
So the plant must hang in a corner, beside a window, and not over the walkway.
Chain, 23.6 in long.
- Height of the pot bottom: 96 in minus 23.6 in equals 72.4 in.
- Against the 80 in yardstick: 80 in minus 72.4 in equals 7.6 in too low for a walking path.
Even a short chain is under the line, so the position matters more than the length. A chain would have to be 16 in or shorter to clear 80 in, because 96 in minus 80 in equals 16 in. That is shorter than the 23.6 in chain, though you could remove links.
The macrame hanger is listed at 20 lb: 20 lb minus 10 lb equals 10 lb in reserve. The chain is listed at 30 lb: 30 lb minus 10 lb equals 20 lb in reserve if that figure covers the set you hang the pot from. For the pulley, the listing gives 10 kg as the maximum. 10 lb is about 4.5 kg (10 divided by 2.2 equals about 4.5), which is under 10 kg, with 10 kg minus 4.5 kg equals 5.5 kg in reserve.
Pot size. The macrame listing says it fits pots from 4 in to 15 in across. An 8 in pot is in range: 15 in minus 8 in equals 7 in below the upper limit.
Watering and dripping
A hanging pot drips onto whatever is below it. Choose a pot with a saucer, or use a pot with a built-in tray, and hang it over a surface that can take a few drops. Take the plant down to water it if you can, or use the pulley. Never reach up while standing on a chair that wobbles. A step stool is safer.
Which hanger fits which room
- Living room window. A macrame hanger gives a soft look. Keep it clear of the sofa and the curtain.
- Balcony or patio. A metal chain is usually a better match for weather than cord, but check the listing for any rust claim.
- High ceiling or stairwell. A pulley saves you from a ladder.
- Rental. A tension solution or a hook into an existing fixture avoids new holes. Check what is allowed.
Who should skip a hanging pot
- Anyone who cannot reach or lift the plant. A hanging plant is awkward to water.
- Homes with climbing pets. A swinging plant can be knocked down or chewed.
- Anyone who cannot fix a hook into a joist. A weak fixing is a danger.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trusting the hanger and ignoring the hook. Both must carry the load.
- Hanging over a walkway. Keep the plant out of the line.
- Forgetting that wet soil is heavy. Weigh the pot after watering.
- Hanging too light a plant on a pulley. Check the listing for a minimum weight.
- Skipping a drip tray. Water will fall.

Frequently asked questions
How much weight can a flower pot hanger hold?
It depends on the hanger. The three we read list 20 lb, 30 lb and 10 kg. The hook and the ceiling must carry that load too.
How long should a plant hanger be?
A 35 in macrame hanger is common in our list, and the chain here is 23.6 in. Choose a length that keeps the plant out of the walking line.
What pot size fits a macrame hanger?
The one we read says 4 in to 15 in across. Check the listing for the hanger you choose.
Can I hang a plant from drywall?
Only with a fixing rated for the load. A joist is stronger. Follow the instructions for the anchor you buy.
Can I use a hanger outdoors?
The data we have does not confirm weather resistance for any of the three, so check the listing for the finish and the cord before you hang one outdoors.
