A plant hanger outdoor is either a bracket or hook that screws into a wall, fence or post, or a rope or macrame sling that hangs from something you already have. For a small porch or balcony, a wall bracket is the best use of space because it takes no floor area. In the listings we read, two brackets were rated for 30 lb and 44 lb each, and one 48 in jute sling had no load figure at all. Decide in this order: what you can screw into, how far the basket must sit from the wall, and how much the basket weighs when it is wet.

Bracket, hook or sling: which fits your space

A bracket is a rigid arm. It holds a basket away from the wall so leaves are not crushed, and it can carry a heavy basket if it is fixed into solid wood or masonry. A hook is the same idea with a smaller reach. A sling is cord or rope that wraps around a pot and meets in a ring; it needs something to hang from, such as a bracket, a hook or a beam.

On a balcony with a railing and a wall, the usual setup is a bracket on the wall and a sling or a basket with its own chains hanging from it. On a patio with a pergola, you can skip brackets and hang slings from the beams. In a rental where you cannot drill, a sling on an existing hook is the lowest-risk choice.

Three hangers compared

Metal hook pair, 11 in (saffruff)

The listing is a two-pack of matte black metal hooks with an item size of 11 x 0.6 x 4.5 in and a stated maximum of 30 lb. The seller describes a triangle load-bearing design and says the set is powder coated for outdoor use. Installation needs a 1/4 in drill bit, and screws and anchors are included. The set weighs 0.34 kg for the pair, so each bracket is light. The 30 lb figure is the lowest of the three, but it is still ample for a normal hanging basket.

Steel bracket pair, 8 in reach (FEED GARDEN)

This listing states a 44 lb capacity and describes the arm as reaching 8 in from the wall, 6 in tall, with a 1 in hook opening. The material is carbon steel with a black powder coat. The box has two brackets, four 1.2 in screws and four wall anchors. The listing also says that for brick or concrete you should use masonry anchors that are not in the box. Note that the item-size field reads 4.9 x 0.9 x 10.23 in, which does not match the 8 in reach in the text, so measure the arm yourself before you rely on the clearance.

Jute macrame sling, 48 in (EBOOT)

This is a two-pack of hand-knotted jute slings, 48 in long in total, with four legs and a stainless key ring at the top. The listing gives no load rating, so treat the capacity as unknown and keep to small pots. It says the slings are suitable indoors and outdoors, and suggests airing them outside for a few days to let the jute smell fade. Natural jute can rot if it stays wet, so it suits a covered porch better than an open rail in the rain.

What to check before you buy

Reach

The distance from the wall to the hook decides whether leaves touch the wall. A basket that is 12 in across and hangs from an 8 in arm will have its centre 8 in out, so the near edge is 2 in from the wall. Add the width of trailing plants. If you want a full, round basket, pick a bracket with a reach of at least half the basket width plus 3 in to 4 in.

Load rating

Most listings state a rating per bracket. Do not add the two brackets and expect a single basket to use both: a basket hangs from one arm. The rating is for the arm, and it also depends on what the arm is fixed into.

Fixings

The screws in the box are meant for wood. A fence post, a deck column or a wall stud is solid enough. Thin siding, vinyl or hollow board is not. If you cannot hit wood, use anchors made for your wall type, and find the right size from the manufacturer of the anchor.

Finish

Powder coat resists weather, but it can chip where a screw head meets the metal. Touch up chips with outdoor paint, since bare steel will rust from that point.

Worked example: a basket on a porch wall

Say you want a 12 in basket with a coir liner hung from a bracket on a porch wall.

  • Plants and basket. Add about 3 lb for the plants, liner and chains, for about 28 lb wet.
  • Rating. A 30 lb arm leaves a margin of 2 lb, which is thin. A 44 lb arm leaves 16 lb, which is a more comfortable margin.
  • Reach. The 12 in basket on an 8 in arm sits 2 in from the wall at its near edge, so a hanging plant with a full skirt will touch it. A 12 in arm would leave 6 in.

The result: for a full 12 in basket, choose the 44 lb arm over the 30 lb one, and check whether 8 in of reach is enough. For a small 8 in pot of 6 lb to 8 lb, either bracket is fine.

Where to hang a plant outdoors

Wind is the main risk. A basket swings, and a swinging basket puts a sideways load on a bracket that is rated only for a hanging weight. Choose a spot that is sheltered, or use a basket with a heavy liner that does not swing much.

Sun is the second factor. A black metal bracket can become very hot in direct sun, which can scorch roots in a thin basket. Use a thick liner to keep the heat away from the soil.

Water drips. A basket drains on whatever is under it. Do not hang it over a seat, a door mat or a walkway you use daily. A basket with a saucer clips on is a good compromise.

Putting up a bracket safely

  1. Find the wood. Use a stud finder, or tap along the wall. Mark the spot at eye level so you can reach the basket for watering.
  2. Drill a pilot hole at the size the listing asks for, such as the 1/4 in bit named for the saffruff hooks.
  3. Fix the bracket with the screws provided, and tighten until the arm does not move.
  4. Test by hanging the empty basket first, then adding weight in steps.

Check the screws each spring, since wood expands and contracts with the weather.

Who should buy which hanger

  • Wall bracket: people with a solid wall or post and a basket heavier than about 10 lb.
  • Sling or macrame: people who hang from an existing beam or hook and want a softer look under cover.
  • Small hooks: light pots, feeders and lanterns.

Who should skip a wall bracket

  • Renters who cannot drill. A sling on an existing hook or a freestanding stand is safer.
  • Anyone with thin vinyl siding. There is nothing solid to hold the screws.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by rating alone. Reach and fixing matter as much.
  • Trusting the item-size field. One listing’s field and text disagree.
  • Forgetting wet weight. Soil can double in weight after rain.
  • Hanging a jute sling in open rain. Keep it under cover.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best plant hanger outdoor for a porch?

For a wall or a post, a steel bracket with a 44 lb rating and 8 in of reach is a strong choice. For a beam, a sling is simpler.

How much weight can an outdoor plant hanger hold?

The two brackets we read stated 30 lb and 44 lb. The jute sling stated no figure, so keep to a small pot.

Are macrame plant hangers safe outdoors?

The listing says they suit indoor and outdoor use, but jute can rot when it stays wet. Use it under cover.

Do plant hanger hooks come with screws?

Both bracket listings say screws and anchors are included, but the FEED GARDEN listing says masonry needs different anchors.

How far from the wall should a hanging basket sit?

Aim for at least half the basket width plus 3 in to 4 in, so leaves are not flattened.
