Quick answer
An Adirondack chair is a wide, reclined outdoor chair with a slanted back, wide flat arms and a low seat. Most current listings are made of HDPE, a plastic, which resists moisture and fading better than untreated wood. Before buying, check four numbers: the overall depth (they are long), the seat height (they sit low, so standing up takes effort), the seat depth and the weight rating, and then decide between a fixed chair and a folding one.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a fixed modern HDPE chair listed at 34 pounds, a folding HDPE chair with two cup holders and a folding HDPE chair with a stated 103 degree backrest. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat in any of them. All numbers come from the listings.
For lower outdoor sets with tables, see bistro table and chairs and high top table and chairs for a patio. For indoor lounging, see accent chairs and leather chaise lounge chair. For a rocking porch chair, see rocking chair.
What makes an Adirondack chair
The design has a tall, slightly curved back, a seat that tilts backward and wide armrests that hold a drink. The tilt puts you in a relaxed, reclined position, which is why these chairs are popular around fire pits and by water.
The same tilt makes them take space. The chair is long from the back of the backrest to the front of the seat, so the footprint is larger than a dining chair’s.
HDPE, wood and what the listings say
Wood Adirondack chairs are traditional, but the three listings we read are all HDPE. HDPE is high-density polyethylene, a plastic that does not absorb water. The Polywood listing describes recyclable lumber with UV inhibitors for lasting color and marine-grade stainless steel hardware, and says the chair is made in the USA. The SUUNYN and Ciokea listings describe HDPE that resists sun, rain and snow without cracking, warping or rusting, and color retention technology.
These are seller claims, and we have not tested any of them. A plastic chair may feel warm in the sun, and the listings do not say how hot the seat gets.
Seat height: low on purpose
Adirondack seats sit low. The Polywood listing gives a seat height of 13.68 inches and the Ciokea listing gives 14.2 inches. The SUUNYN listing gives no seat height in the fields we read. A seat that low is very relaxing but hard to stand up from, particularly for older people or anyone with stiff knees.
As our own rough rule, a seat near the height of the back of your knee is easiest to rise from. At 13.68 or 14.2 inches, these seats are several inches lower than the back of the knee of most adults.
Footprint and depth
The Polywood chair is 32.11 inches deep and 29.25 inches wide. The SUUNYN chair is 29 by 29 inches. The Ciokea chair is 31.3 inches deep and 29.2 inches wide. So each chair needs a square of about 30 inches, plus room to lean back and to stand.
The U.S. Access Board’s accessible-route guidance uses 36 inches as a minimum clear width for a route and 32 inches at short points such as doorways. That rule is for public buildings, but it gives a helpful yardstick for the path behind an Adirondack chair on a small deck.
Folding or fixed
A folding chair stores flat, which helps if you want to put the chairs in a shed in winter. The SUUNYN and Ciokea listings are folding chairs. The Polywood listing describes a chair that needs assembly and does not mention folding. A fixed chair is usually sturdier, while a folding chair saves space.
None of the listings we read gives a folded size, so ask if storage space is tight.
Seat depth, back angle and comfort
The seat depth is 20.5 inches for the Polywood, 21.7 inches for the SUUNYN and 21 inches for the Ciokea. The Ciokea and CLOUDEEP listings describe a 103 degree backrest angle, which is a relaxed recline. The Polywood listing describes a contoured seat with a waterfall front.
A waterfall front is a rounded front edge that reduces pressure behind the knees. Comfort depends on your leg length, so a deep seat suits a taller person.
Weight ratings
The listings give 300 pounds for the Polywood and 380 pounds for each of the SUUNYN and Ciokea. The figures are the sellers’ and we have not verified them. Because an Adirondack chair is low and wide, people tend to drop into it, so a margin above your weight is worth having.
Cup holders and arms
The SUUNYN listing describes two cup holders, one standard and one for a wine goblet. The Ciokea listing describes one cup holder and armrests that are 4.9 inches wide. The Polywood listing describes wide armrests but no cup holder in the text we read.
Wide arms can hold a plate or a drink, which is the reason many people like these chairs.
Near a fire pit
Several HDPE listings describe their chairs as fire pit chairs. A plastic chair near an open flame can soften or melt if it gets too close, and the listings we read give no heat rating. Keep chairs well back from any flame and check the seller’s safety guidance.
The three listings we read
POLYWOOD Modern Adirondack Chair, black (model AD420BL). The listing gives 32.11 by 29.25 by 34.66 inches (D by W by H), a seat height of 13.68 inches, a seat depth of 20.5 inches, a listed weight of 34 pounds, a 300 pound maximum recommendation, HDPE construction with UV inhibitors, marine-grade stainless hardware and assembly required. Good for: a fixed, well-described chair with a waterfall seat edge. Keep in mind: it is not described as folding, and its 300 pound rating is lower than the other two. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
SUUNYN Folding Adirondack Chair, HDPE with 2 cup holders, black. The listing gives 29 by 29 by 35 inches, a seat depth of 21.7 inches, a backrest width of 22 inches, a listed weight of 31.6 pounds, a 380 pound maximum recommendation, a folding design and two cup holders. Good for: a patio where chairs are stored between uses. Keep in mind: no seat height or folded size is given. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
Ciokea Folding Adirondack Chair, wood texture, HDPE (model OCK0102). The listing gives 31.3 by 29.2 by 35.1 inches, a seat height of 14.2 inches, a seat depth of 21 inches, a listed weight of 33.7 pounds, a 380 pound maximum recommendation, a 103 degree backrest, 4.9 inch wide armrests, a cup holder and about 15 minutes of one-person assembly. Good for: a deck where a folding chair with a stated back angle is wanted. Keep in mind: the listing gives two different size lines (31.3 by 29.2 by 35.1 and 29.5 by 34.25 by 36.5 inches). The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
A worked example
These numbers are invented. A deck is 96 inches (8 feet) wide and 96 inches deep. You want two chairs side by side with a small table 18 inches wide between them, facing the railing.
Width. Two Polywood chairs take 2 × 29.25 = 58.5 inches, and with the table 58.5 + 18 = 76.5 inches, leaving 96 − 76.5 = 19.5 inches. That is enough for a side path at one end.
Depth. The Polywood chair is 32.11 inches deep. Leaving the Access Board’s 36 inch yardstick behind it needs 32.11 + 36 = 68.11 inches, which leaves 96 − 68.11 = 27.89 inches in front for legs and a footstool. The SUUNYN, at 29 inches deep, needs 29 + 36 = 65 inches and leaves 31 inches in front.
Seat height. Suppose the person’s knee height is 19 inches. The Polywood seat at 13.68 inches is 19 − 13.68 = 5.32 inches below it, and the Ciokea seat at 14.2 inches is 4.8 inches below. Standing up will take a push on the arms.
Weight. A 280 pound person is under the Polywood’s 300 pounds by 20 pounds and under the 380 pound chairs by 100 pounds.
Red flags in listings
A seat height of 35.8 inches on an Adirondack chair, which we saw on one folding listing whose overall height is 35.4 inches, is the overall height mislabeled. A size line that shows two different footprints, a “fire pit” label with no heat rating and a “25 year” fade claim with no terms are signs to ask. Always check the seat height and depth separately from the overall size.
Who should skip an Adirondack chair
If standing up is hard, a low seat is a poor choice; choose a higher outdoor chair. If your balcony is narrow, a chair 30 inches deep and wide will use most of it. If you want a chair that is cool in full sun, test how the plastic feels, because we could not.
Frequently asked questions
Are HDPE Adirondack chairs good outdoors?
The listings we read describe HDPE as weather and fade resistant. These are seller claims and we have not tested them.
How low is an Adirondack seat?
About 14 inches in the listings we read, which is low and hard to stand from.
Do folding Adirondack chairs work as well as fixed ones?
They store flat and are lighter. A fixed chair may feel sturdier. The listings give no folded size, so ask if storage is tight.
Can I use an HDPE Adirondack chair by a fire pit?
Some sellers call them fire pit chairs. A plastic chair can soften near flame, and the listings give no heat rating, so keep well back and follow the seller’s guidance.
What weight can an Adirondack chair hold?
The ones we read say 300 to 380 pounds. The figures are the sellers’ and we have not verified them.
Bottom line
Choose Adirondack chairs by footprint, seat height and weight rating, then by fixed or folding. Of the three listings above, the Polywood is the fixed chair with the most detailed material claims, the SUUNYN is the folding pair with two cup holders and no seat height and the Ciokea is the folding chair with a stated 103 degree back. Measure your deck depth, and expect a low, deep seat.
