Quick answer

The standard sizes in Amerisleep’s chart are twin (38 by 74 inches), twin XL (38 by 80), full (54 by 75), queen (60 by 80), king (76 by 80) and California king (72 by 84). The suggested rooms run from 7 by 10 feet for a twin to 12 by 12 for a king and a cal king. A queen gives each of two sleepers about 16.7 square feet, a king about 21.1, and a full about 14.1. Choose by the number of sleepers, the room and the height of the people.

The sizes at a glance

SizeMattress (inches)Surface areaRoom suggestedBest for (Amerisleep)
Twin38 × 7419.5 sq ft7 × 10 ftChildren, singles, guest rooms
Twin XL38 × 8021.1 sq ft9.5 × 10.5 ftTall teens, college dorms
Full54 × 7528.1 sq ft9.5 × 10.5 ftSingle adults, guest rooms
Queen60 × 8033.3 sq ft10 × 10 ftCouples, most popular
King76 × 8042.2 sq ft12 × 12 ftCouples wanting space, families
California king72 × 8442.0 sq ft12 × 12 ftTall sleepers, narrow rooms

The same chart lists an Olympic queen at 66 by 80 inches, wider than a queen by 6 inches.

Worked example: space per sleeper and share of the room

This is our own arithmetic.

SizeSleepersMattress area per sleeperShare of the suggested room
Twin119.5 sq ft19.5 / 70 = 27.9 percent
Full228.1 / 2 = 14.1 sq ft28.1 / 99.75 = 28.2 percent
Queen233.3 / 2 = 16.7 sq ft33.3 / 100 = 33.3 percent
King242.2 / 2 = 21.1 sq ft42.2 / 144 = 29.3 percent

Two people on a full each get 14.1 square feet, less than the 19.5 a single sleeper has on a twin. A king gives each of two people more than a twin does. The share of the room barely changes from a twin to a king in the suggested rooms, 28 to 33 percent, which is a sign that Amerisleep’s room sizes grow with the bed.

Width per person is the other measure: a queen is 60 inches wide, which is 30 inches each; a king is 76 inches, 38 inches each, the width of a twin.

One frame per size

These are examples from our other guides; the numbers are from the listings.

  • Twin: MAF 14 inch twin frame, 74.5 by 38 by 14 inches, 25.2 pounds (see twin size mattress frame).
  • Full: ITIMIDI 14 inch full frame, 74.65 by 53.5 by 14 inches, 34.1 pounds (see full mattress frame).
  • Queen: Zinus 14 inch Rumi queen frame, 79.5 by 59.5 by 14 inches, 27.6 pounds (see queensize bed).
  • King: Zinus 14 inch Rumi king frame, 79.5 by 75.4 by 14 inches, 32.5 pounds (see king platform bedframe).
  • California king: Upcanso 16 inch frame, 83.6 by 71.6 by 16 inches, 46.2 pounds (see cal king bed platform).

Notice the pattern: frames are listed a little smaller than the mattress, by 0.4 to 0.5 inch on each dimension, because of the rail and stopper design; the king frame is 75.4 inches wide against a 76 inch mattress.

How to choose a size

Count the sleepers. One adult: twin XL or full. Two adults: queen at minimum, king if the room allows.

Check the room. Amerisleep’s room sizes are a guide; measure yours and leave a walkway.

Check the height. A twin is 74 inches long, which is 6 feet 2 inches; taller people want a twin XL (80 inches) or a cal king (84).

Check the frame and bedding. Frames, sheets and headboards are all sized to the mattress.

Height and the right length

A twin is 74 inches long, which is 6 feet 2 inches, so anyone about that tall or taller will find their feet at the end. A twin XL and a full XL, at 80 inches, are 6 feet 8 inches, and a cal king at 84 inches is 7 feet. Amerisleep lists the cal king as best for tall sleepers and narrow rooms, which follows from the 72 inch width. If you sleep alone and are tall, the length matters more than the width; if you sleep with a partner, the width matters.

Frame notes by size

A frame is a little smaller than the mattress for steel frames and larger for wood frames with headboards. The twin frame example is 74.5 by 38 inches against a 38 by 74 mattress, so it is 0.5 inch longer. The king example is 75.4 by 79.5 inches, against 76 by 80, so about half an inch under. For headboard-and-footboard frames and wood beds, see bed frame too big for mattress, where the margins run from minus 2 to plus 9 inches.

Choosing in three steps

First, count who sleeps in the bed, and how tall they are. Second, measure the room and subtract the bed’s size from it: a bed along one wall of a 10 by 10 foot room leaves 40 inches at the foot for a queen. Third, check the frame for that size, since frame listings are specific to a mattress size and a frame for a queen will not fit a king.

Mistakes to avoid

Mixing king and cal king. A king is 4 inches wider and 4 inches shorter.

Buying a twin when you need XL. A dorm mattress is usually twin XL.

Trusting “double”. It is not a standard name in Amerisleep’s chart; check the inches.

Ignoring the frame. A frame can add inches, especially with a headboard.

Which size for which situation

Here is a simple map, drawn from Amerisleep’s descriptions. A child or a single teen in a small room: a twin, which is 19.5 square feet and suits a 7 by 10 foot room. A tall teen or a student in a dorm: a twin XL, 80 inches long. A single adult who wants more width, or a guest room: a full, 54 inches wide. A couple in an average room: a queen, the most popular size. A couple who want space or a family that shares a bed: a king, which needs about 12 by 12 feet. Tall sleepers in a narrow room: a cal king, which is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a king.

Checking the frame and bedding

Beds come as a set of parts: the mattress, the frame, the sheets, a protector and perhaps a headboard. Each is sold by size, and mixing sizes causes the problems we describe in our other guides: a king frame under a cal king mattress, a twin frame under a twin XL mattress. When you buy one part, note the size in inches and check that the other parts match, since the names alone are easy to confuse.

When another guide helps

For a king bed with a headboard, see bedframe for king bed. For a twin XL frame, see extra long single bed frame. For fit between frame and mattress, see bed frame too big for mattress.
