Storage volume. The upper bound is clearance times 38 by 74.5 inches, divided by 1,728.

• Superay: 16.4 times 38 times 74.5 is 46,428 cubic inches, which is 26.9 cubic feet.
• MAF: 12.4 times 38 times 74.5 is 35,104 cubic inches, which is 20.3 cubic feet.

Legs and cross bars take space, so you will fit less. The Superay frame gives about 32 percent more room than the MAF (26.9 divided by 20.3), at a cost of 4 more inches of bed height.

Weight. The frames weigh 25.8, 25.2 and 28 pounds. One adult can carry any of them as a flat box, which is why twin frames suit dorms and rentals.

The ratings come from sellers using different units and no stated method. Read them as a rough hint about the materials, not a ranking.

How to pick

Match the mattress. Measure it and compare it with the frame’s length and width.

Choose the height for the sleeper. A child or a person with a knee problem will prefer 22 inches to 26.

Decide whether you will use the space. The 12.4 and 16.4 inch clearances are real storage; the bamboo listing gives no number.

Check the slat gap. MAF gives 5.1 inches; if your mattress comes with a slat guideline, compare it before you order.

Twin for a dorm, a child or a guest room

A dorm is a special case. Amerisleep lists the twin XL, 38 by 80 inches and 21.1 square feet, as the size for college dorms. A twin XL mattress on a 74.5 inch frame would hang over the foot by 5.5 inches, which is 80 minus 74.5, so check the dorm’s mattress size before you buy any twin frame.

For a young child the height matters more than the weight rating. On the Superay frame with an 8 inch mattress the top is 26 inches from the floor, which is our example, against 22 inches on the 14 inch frames. A step or a guard rail changes the choice, and the listings do not state safety certifications for use by children; if the bed is for a child, check the manufacturer’s age guidance on the page itself.

For a guest room the question is storage. The Superay frame’s 16.4 inches under the bed holds the guest bedding and a suitcase; the 14 inch frames give less and the bamboo listing gives no number.
