Quick answer
A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches and Amerisleep says a queen needs a room of about 10 by 10 feet. The queen frames below are listed at 59.5 to 63.5 inches wide and 79.5 to 84 inches long, so a frame takes 32.8 to 37.0 square feet of a 100 square foot room. Pick a metal platform if you want to keep the floor open and store things underneath, and a wood frame with a headboard if the bed is the centerpiece.
Queen, full and king side by side
| Size | Mattress | Surface area | Room suggested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full | 54 by 75 in | 28.1 sq ft | 9.5 by 10.5 ft |
| Queen | 60 by 80 in | 33.3 sq ft | 10 by 10 ft |
| King | 76 by 80 in | 42.2 sq ft | 12 by 12 ft |
Source: Amerisleep. A queen is 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a full. If one sleeper needs more room than a full gives and the room is small, a queen is the usual step up; if two adults share, a queen is the narrowest size that gives each about 30 inches of width, which is our arithmetic, 60 divided by 2.
Worked example: how much of a 10 by 10 room a queen frame takes
This is our own arithmetic, using the room Amerisleep gives for a queen. The room is 120 by 120 inches, which is 100 square feet. Floor area is length times width divided by 144.
- Zinus Rumi metal frame, 79.5 by 59.5 inches: 4,730.25 square inches, 32.8 square feet, 32.8 percent of the room.
- Modway Bridgette wood frame with headboard, 84 by 63.5 inches: 5,334 square inches, 37.0 square feet, 37.0 percent of the room.
- The mattress alone, 60 by 80 inches: 4,800 square inches, 33.3 square feet.
Now the width. If the Modway frame is centered on a 120 inch wall, 120 minus 63.5 is 56.5 inches, which is 28.25 inches on each side. That is enough to pass, but a 24 inch nightstand on one side leaves a little over 4 inches on that side, which is not a passage. The Zinus frame is 59.5 inches wide, so each side has 30.25 inches. Measure your wall and nightstands before you choose a frame with a wide headboard.
What the listings say
Zinus 14 Inch Rumi Metal Bed Frame, Queen, black (ASIN B0CSYBPMW4). The table gives 79.5 by 59.5 by 14 inches, a weight of 27.6 pounds and alloy steel. The bullets say it holds up to 2,200 pounds for sizes other than twin, gives 13 inches of under-bed storage, needs no box spring, assembles in under 20 minutes and has a 5-year limited warranty. Best for: a frame that is light and quick to assemble. Watch out: the title says 14 inches and the bullet says 13 inches of storage, so about 1 inch is frame; the listing does not name a headboard.
Superay 18 Inch Queen Size Metal Platform Bed Frame with Round Corners Leg, black (ASIN B0D4YD4BH6). The table gives 79.5 by 59.5 by 18 inches, a weight of 38.5 pounds and a rating of 3,500 pounds. The bullets give 16.4 inches of under-bed storage, four mattress stoppers, three pre-drilled headboard holes, silent sponges between the slats and silicone foot caps. Best for: someone with luggage or boxes to store. Watch out: a taller bed is a harder bed to climb into for some people; 18 inches plus a 10 inch mattress is 28 inches from the floor, our example.
Modway Bridgette Wood Platform Bed with Splayed Legs, Queen, Walnut Charcoal (ASIN B08JM966LZ). The table gives 84 by 63.5 by 48 inches, a weight of 103 pounds and a rating of 272.61 kilograms, which is 601 pounds. The bullets say 85.5 by 63.5 by 53 to 63 inches and a weight limit of 601 pounds, an MDF and veneer build with rubberwood splayed legs, a button-tufted fabric headboard and a wood slat support system with no box spring needed. Best for: a finished look with the headboard included. Watch out: the height is listed as 48 inches in the table and 53 to 63 inches in the bullets; the same difference changes how much wall shows above the bed.
How the three compare
| Listing | Width | Length | Weight | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zinus Rumi | 59.5 in | 79.5 in | 27.6 lb | 2,200 lb |
| Superay 18 inch | 59.5 in | 79.5 in | 38.5 lb | 3,500 lb |
| Modway Bridgette | 63.5 in | 84 in | 103 lb | 601 lb |
The ratings are not on the same basis: the Modway rating is for a wood frame with a headboard and the other two are for steel frames that the seller rates much higher. Do not read the larger number as stronger sleep support; read it as a hint about the materials.
Choosing a frame for a queensize bed
Floor space first. Start with the room’s measurements and the arithmetic above, then pick.
Box spring or not. All three listings are platform or slat designs that say no box spring is needed. A frame that does need one adds its height to the bed.
Under-bed use. Superay lists 16.4 inches of clearance and Zinus 13 inches; the Modway listing states no clearance.
Headboard. The metal frames offer holes for one; the Modway includes one. For wall options see headboards for queen beds.
Which frame for which room
The share of the floor a frame takes grows quickly as the room shrinks. Using the same floor areas as above, 32.8 square feet for the Zinus and 37.0 for the Modway:
| Room | Floor area | Zinus Rumi takes | Modway Bridgette takes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 by 10 ft | 90 sq ft | 36.5 percent | 41.2 percent |
| 10 by 10 ft | 100 sq ft | 32.8 percent | 37.0 percent |
| 10 by 12 ft | 120 sq ft | 27.4 percent | 30.9 percent |
These percentages are our arithmetic, and the room sizes are examples. In a 9 by 10 foot room, a queen takes more than a third of the floor whichever frame you choose, so the bigger question there is whether a full, 28.1 square feet per Amerisleep, would leave you more room to live. See our full mattress frame guide for that size.
If the room is large enough, the Modway’s headboard and wider footprint cost you 4.2 percentage points of floor in a 100 square foot room (37.0 minus 32.8). That is the price of the built-in headboard, and for many people it is worth it; for a tight room it is not.
Mistakes to avoid
Judging by mattress size only. A frame can be wider than the mattress, as the Modway frame is by 3.5 inches, because of its headboard and side rails.
Not leaving a walkway. The example above leaves 28 inches on each side of the Modway frame, less once a nightstand is added.
Trusting one height figure. The Modway page shows 48 and 53 to 63 inches.
Skipping the weight. The Modway frame is 103 pounds; two people are easier than one.
