Quick answer
A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches, and the three frames below measure 81.7 to 83.46 inches long and 59.6 to 60.51 inches wide, with headboards 33.4 to 41.33 inches high. In a 10 by 10 foot room with 24 inches of clearance on each side and at the foot (Amerisleep’s guidance), they leave 11.5 to 12.4 inches spare in width and 12.5 to 14.3 inches in length. If you sleep on a thick mattress, prefer a headboard that can be raised.
What a headboard adds to the numbers
A frame with a headboard is longer than the mattress by the thickness of the headboard and the footboard rails. The three frames are 1.7, 3.46 and 3.46 inches longer than an 80 inch queen mattress (81.7, 83.46 and 83.46 minus 80). That small excess matters against a wall: a 3.46 inch margin is what the headboard and rails take.
Width is the other number. The first frame is listed at 59.6 inches wide, which is 0.4 inch narrower than the 60 inch mattress it claims to hold. A frame with side rails is normally wider than the mattress, as IKEA’s MALM queen is, so ask the seller for the outside width if the room is tight.
Worked example: a 10 by 10 foot room
Say the room is 10 by 10 feet, which is 120 by 120 inches, the minimum Amerisleep lists for a queen. Amerisleep advises at least 24 inches of clearance on each side and at the foot. With the headboard on one wall, the space left after the clearance is the room dimension minus the frame minus the clearance.
| Frame | Length | Width | Spare length (120 minus L minus 24) | Spare width (120 minus W minus 48) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic wood with headboard | 81.7 in | 59.6 in | 14.3 in | 12.4 in |
| HAOARA upholstered | 83.46 in | 60.03 in | 12.54 in | 11.97 in |
| Bestier adjustable headboard | 83.46 in | 60.51 in | 12.54 in | 11.49 in |
Every frame fits, with about 12 inches to spare each way. That spare space is where a night stand has to go: two 15 inch wide night stands add 30 inches, so the classic frame needs 59.6 plus 48 plus 30, which is 137.6 inches, or about 11.5 feet, of width for the clearance and both night stands (see our guide to night stands for the bedroom).
Mattress thickness and the headboard
One of the frames states how it handles thick mattresses: the Bestier has two preset headboard heights, for mattresses of 8 to 10 inches and 10 to 12 inches. The other two do not state a mattress thickness limit or a headboard adjustment. That matters because a thick mattress rises against the headboard and covers its face, and a headboard that is 33.4 inches high leaves less visible surface than one at 41.33 inches. IKEA says the same of its MALM frame, that a very thick mattress may partly cover the headboard (see our MALM bedframe guide).
What fits under the bed
Only one of the three states the clearance under the frame: HAOARA gives 6.3 inches. IKEA’s MALM queen, for comparison, gives 8 1/4 inches under the frame. Say a storage box is 6 inches tall (an example): it fits under the HAOARA with 0.3 inch to spare (6.3 minus 6) and under the MALM with 2.25 inches (8.25 minus 6). A 7 inch box fits under the MALM and not under the HAOARA. If you plan to store anything, ask the sellers of the other two listings for the clearance, because it is not in the tables we read.

We have not tested these. The numbers are from the Amazon measurement tables and bullets. The first and third listings show “cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location” from Vietnam, so their cart buttons are hidden; that is a shipping limit from where we opened them.
Classic wood platform queen frame with headboard. The table gives 81.7 inches long, 59.6 wide, 33.4 high and 71.6 pounds, a queen (US standard) size. The bullets give a rubber wood frame, wooden slats with sticky pads, no box spring needed and under-bed storage space. Best for: a bedroom that wants a plain wood bed with a short headboard. Watch out: the 59.6 inch width, narrower than the mattress.
HAOARA queen frame with upholstered tufted headboard. The table gives 83.46 inches long, 60.03 wide, 41.33 high, 58.9 pounds and states both a maximum weight capacity of 800 pounds and a maximum weight recommendation of 1,000 pounds. The bullets give a velvet and foam tufted headboard, a metal frame with nine center support legs, Velcro slat connectors and 6.3 inches of under-bed clearance. Best for: a bed that should look upholstered, with space for storage boxes up to 6.3 inches tall. Watch out: the two weight figures differ; ask which applies.
Bestier queen frame with adjustable headboard and LED, light grey. The table gives 83.46 inches long, 60.51 wide, 39.37 high and 74.9 pounds and a maximum weight recommendation of 1,100 pounds. The bullets give two preset headboard heights for mattresses of 8 to 10 and 10 to 12 inches, a headboard with a 4.5 inch wide top ledge, a built-in charging station, RGB LED lights with a remote and wood slats. Best for: a thick mattress and a headboard that holds a phone and a book. Watch out: it is the heaviest of the three at 74.9 pounds and it needs a power outlet within reach of the lights.
How the three compare
| Listing | Length | Width | Headboard height | Weight | Mattress note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic wood | 81.7 in | 59.6 in | 33.4 in | 71.6 lb | Not stated |
| HAOARA | 83.46 in | 60.03 in | 41.33 in | 58.9 lb | 6.3 in under-bed clearance |
| Bestier | 83.46 in | 60.51 in | 39.37 in | 74.9 lb | Headboard presets for 8 to 12 in |
Mistakes to avoid
Planning from the mattress size. The frame adds 1.7 to 3.46 inches of length and the width margin is small.
Ignoring mattress thickness. A thick mattress can cover the headboard.
Trusting a width narrower than the mattress. Ask for the outside width.
Forgetting the doorway. A headboard frame ships in long boxes.
Placing nightstands without counting the width. Two 15 inch nightstands need an extra 30 inches beside the bed.
When you may not need a headboard frame
If you already own a headboard you like, a plain platform frame costs less and lets you choose it; see the platform bed frame guide. If you want drawers, see the bed frame with storage guide. If the room is a guest room that must also seat people, a daybed as a couch may serve better.
Frequently asked questions
How big is a queen bed frame with a headboard?
The three we read are 81.7 to 83.46 inches long and 59.6 to 60.51 inches wide, with headboards 33.4 to 41.33 inches high.
How much room does a queen bed need?
Amerisleep lists 10 by 10 feet as the minimum room for a queen and advises at least 24 inches of clearance on each side and at the foot.
Will a thick mattress fit a frame with a headboard?
It depends on the frame. One listing has headboard presets for 8 to 10 and 10 to 12 inch mattresses; the others do not state a limit.
Is a headboard included with the frame?
In the three listings we read, yes. Some frames sell the headboard separately, so check the title and bullets.
How much does a queen frame with a headboard weigh?
The three we read are 58.9 to 74.9 pounds, so moving one up a staircase takes two people and the boxes are long. Measure the stairwell before you order.
Do I need a box spring with a platform frame?
The three listings say no box spring is needed because slats support the mattress. Check the maker’s mattress guidance for your mattress.
