Height: match the mattress top
The top of a night stand should be about level with the top of the mattress, so that you reach sideways, not up or down. This is a planning rule, and the number you need is the mattress top height of your own bed: measure from the floor to the top of the mattress.
Worked example: say the bed is a floor frame of 10.24 inches (the IDEALHOUSE queen floor frame in our MALM bedframe guide) with a 10 inch mattress (an assumption). The mattress top is then at 20.24 inches. The three night stands below are 22.87, 23.9 and 24.4 inches tall, which is 2.63, 3.66 and 4.16 inches above the mattress top. That is within a few inches. On a tall bed, with a mattress top at 28 inches, none of them would work: you would want a taller one such as the 29.53 inch fluted piece in our dresser and nightstand set guide, which its listing says is meant for beds with mattress heights of 28 to 32 inches.
Width: the gap is smaller than it looks
Worked example: say the bed is a queen (60 inches wide, Amerisleep’s chart) centered in a 10 foot wide room, which is 120 inches. Each side has (120 minus 60) divided by 2, which is 30 inches. A 15.3 inch night stand takes half of that and leaves 30 minus 15.3, which is 14.7 inches to walk. Amerisleep advises at least 24 inches of clearance at the side of a bed, so 14.7 inches is not enough.
To keep 24 inches beside the night stand, each side needs 15.3 plus 24, which is 39.3 inches. Two sides need 78.6 inches, and with the bed that is 60 plus 78.6, which is 138.6 inches, or 11.55 feet. With a night stand on one side only, you need 60 plus 15.3 plus 24 plus 24, which is 123.3 inches, or about 10.3 feet. If the room is narrower, put the night stand on one side, use a wall shelf on the other or choose a narrower table.
Worked example: a surface budget
A night stand top is small, so count what must sit on it. The three tops are 11.4 by 15.3 inches (174 square inches), 11.8 by 15.3 (181) and 11.81 by 15.94 (188). Say you need a lamp with a 6 inch round base (about 28 square inches), a phone on a charger (6 by 3 inches, 18 square inches) and a book (9 by 6 inches, 54 square inches). That is 100 square inches, which leaves 74 to 88 square inches free, but the shape matters: a 15.3 inch wide top holds the lamp, the phone and the book in a row only if they fit within 15.3 inches, and 6 plus 3 plus 9 is 18 inches. So one item has to move to the shelf or the drawer.
Drawers, shelves and charging
Open shelf. Good for a book and a charger, but anything on it is visible.
One drawer. Keeps a few things hidden; check that the drawer pulls out without hitting the bed.
Charging station. Adds an outlet strip and a cord to manage. The Leomonio listing below has one, with LED lights.
Weight limit. One of the three states a maximum weight recommendation of 100 pounds. The other two do not, so do not put heavy items on them.
Safety note
The CPSC rule for clothing storage units covers free-standing units at least 27 inches tall, weighing at least 30 pounds and with at least 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage. All three night stands below are under 27 inches tall, so they fall below the rule’s height line by the listing numbers. A light night stand can still be pulled over, so keep heavy objects low and anchor it if the maker provides hardware.

Mistakes to avoid
Buying by style before height. A night stand that is 4 inches below the mattress top is awkward.
Ignoring the gap. A 15 inch night stand cuts a 30 inch side gap in half.
Trusting one set of numbers. The Leomonio listing gives two sizes.
Overloading a light stand. An 8 pound piece is not a place for heavy items.
Forgetting the cord. A charging night stand needs an outlet in reach.
When you may not need a night stand
