Quick answer
Add up the widths before you buy. A queen bed (60 inches) with two 30.7 inch nightstands from one set needs 60 plus 61.4, which is 121.4 inches of wall, more than a 10 foot (120 inch) wall. The same bed with two 15.7 inch night stands needs 91.4 inches and leaves 28.6 inches in a 10 foot room. Check the count of pieces, the heights of the dresser and the nightstands and the weight and anti-tip hardware of the dresser before you order.
Worked example: a 10 foot wall
Say the bed is a queen of 60 inches (Amerisleep), centered on a 10 foot, or 120 inch, wall. Compare the two sets below.
| Set | Nightstand width (each) | Two nightstands | With the bed | Wall left in 120 in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Set with wide nightstands (30.7 in) | 30.7 in | 61.4 in | 121.4 in | Minus 1.4 in (does not fit) |
| Set with narrow nightstands (15.7 in) | 15.7 in | 31.4 in | 91.4 in | 28.6 in |
The 30.7 inch nightstands are too wide for a 10 foot wall by 1.4 inches, and even on a 12 foot wall (144 inches) they leave only 144 minus 121.4, which is 22.6 inches of wall in total, so you cannot have 24 inches of clearance at both ends. Put one on a side and use the other piece elsewhere.
The depth matters at the foot of the bed. With the head of the bed on a wall in a 10 by 10 foot room, the foot is 120 minus 80, which is 40 inches from the opposite wall. A 15.5 inch deep dresser leaves 24.5 inches; an 11.8 inch deep one leaves 28.2 inches. Both meet Amerisleep’s 24 inch guide, but with a drawer open the 15.5 inch dresser leaves much less.
Height and look
A set is meant to match, but the heights are not always the same. The WLIVE line below lists a 2-drawer night stand at 24.9 inches high and a 6-drawer dresser at 29.4 inches, a 4.5 inch difference. The other set lists a 6-drawer dresser at 33.6 inches and nightstands at 25 inches, an 8.6 inch difference. A taller dresser is normal; what matters is that the night stand top is close to your mattress top (see our night stands for the bedroom guide).
The count of pieces
One listing below is titled “3 Pieces Bedroom Sets, 6 Drawer Dresser and Nightstand Sets” and the title text also says “6-drawer dresser & 3 drawer nightstand sets of 2”. The bullets then list a 6-drawer dresser, a 5-drawer dresser and two nightstands, which is four pieces. Ask the seller what ships in the box before you plan the room.
Safety: the dresser has a rule, the night stands mostly do not
The CPSC rule for clothing storage units covers free-standing units at least 27 inches tall, weighing at least 30 pounds and with at least 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage, and requires an anti-tip device in the box. The page we opened lists dressers as examples. In a set, the dressers are the pieces within scope by height, and the night stands under 27 inches are not, by the listing numbers. Anchor the dresser and any tall piece.
Three sets and pieces read on 2026-10-01
We have not tested these. The numbers are from the Amazon measurement tables and bullets.
Bedroom set, grey and white: 6-drawer dresser, 5-drawer dresser and 2 nightstands. The table is empty, so the numbers come from the bullets: a 6-drawer dresser at 46.5 inches wide, 15.5 deep and 33.6 high; a 5-drawer dresser at 29.53 wide, 15.55 deep and 45.67 high; and two nightstands at 30.7 wide, 15.5 deep and 25 high. The bullets also give a tabletop that supports up to 80 pounds, 40 mm (1.57 inch) thick composite frames and ball-bearing slides. The title says three pieces and the bullets list four. Best for: a larger room with a wide wall. Watch out: the 30.7 inch nightstands and the piece-count conflict.
WLIVE night stand set, dresser and nightstand line, dark grey. The listing is a family of sizes. It lists a 2-drawer night stand at 15.7 by 11.8 by 24.9 inches, a 3-drawer dresser at 17.7 by 11.8 by 29.5, a 6-drawer dresser at 31.5 by 11.8 by 29.4 and a 10-drawer dresser at 39.4 by 11.8 by 45.2 (length by width by height as the listing writes them). The bullets give removable fabric drawers, a wooden top and a steel frame. Best for: a small room that wants matching pieces in several sizes. Watch out: the title says “set 2”, so check which size and count you are adding to the cart.
Fluted 3-drawer night stand and dresser, 25.6 inch, white. The table gives 13.78 inches deep, 25.59 wide, 29.53 high and 40.2 pounds. The bullets give a fluted wave front, three drawers with metal hardware, CARB P2 certified wood (the seller’s claim) and a height meant for queen and king beds with mattress heights of 28 to 32 inches. Best for: a tall bed, as a night stand or small dresser. Watch out: at 29.53 inches and 40.2 pounds it is over the rule’s height and weight lines, so look for an anti-tip kit and anchor it.
How the three compare
| Listing | Pieces and widths | Depth | Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grey and white set | Dresser 46.5 in, dresser 29.53 in, two nightstands 30.7 in | 15.5 in | 25 to 45.67 in |
| WLIVE line | Night stand 15.7 in; dressers 17.7 to 39.4 in | 11.8 in | 23.2 to 45.2 in |
| Fluted piece | One piece, 25.59 in | 13.78 in | 29.53 in |
What to ask the seller
Before you order a set, ask four things: how many pieces ship in the box and what their sizes are, whether the dresser comes with an anti-tip kit, whether pieces can be bought separately if one arrives damaged, and whether the drawer glides are metal or plastic. The listings above answer some of these in their bullets, and none answers all four.
Mistakes to avoid
Counting the pieces from the title. One listing gives three pieces in the title and four in the bullets.
Adding up only the bed. Two 30.7 inch nightstands do not fit a 10 foot wall with a queen bed.
Matching the look, not the height. The night stand has to suit the mattress top.
Skipping the anchor. The dresser is the piece the federal rule is aimed at.
Buying the set before measuring the doorway. Dressers ship in long boxes.
When you may not need a set
If you need one piece for storage and one for the bedside, two separate pieces in the same finish give more choice of size. Compare the dresser buying guide and the nightstands guide, or the chest of drawers guide for tall narrow pieces. If you need hanging space, see the wardrobe guide.
Frequently asked questions
How wide are the nightstands in a dresser and nightstand set?
In the listings we read they range from 15.7 to 30.7 inches wide, so check the width before you plan the wall.
How much wall do two nightstands and a queen bed need?
The bed is 60 inches. With two 15.7 inch night stands you need 91.4 inches; with two 30.7 inch ones you need 121.4 inches.
Should the dresser and nightstands be the same height?
Not necessarily. The dresser is usually taller. What matters is that the night stand top is close to the mattress top.
Does a dresser in a set need to be anchored?
Yes. The CPSC rule covers dressers at least 27 inches tall and 30 pounds and requires an anti-tip device in the box; installing it is up to you.
Should I buy the set or separate pieces?
A set guarantees a matching finish. Separate pieces let you choose widths: two 15.7 inch night stands fit a 10 foot wall with a queen bed, while two 30.7 inch ones do not.
How many pieces are in a bedroom set?
Check the listing. One we read says three pieces in the title and lists four in the bullets.
