For example, a hall has a 60 foot wall, which is 720 inches. With chairs 17.5 inches wide, 720 ÷ 17.5 ≈ 41 chairs fit in a row if they touch. With 21.25 inch chairs, 720 ÷ 21.25 ≈ 33. Chairs that touch are no use for people, so allow about 2 extra inches per chair, giving 720 ÷ 19.5 ≈ 36 and 720 ÷ 23.25 ≈ 30. The wide chairs are more comfortable, and they fill a hall faster.

A lower gauge number means thicker steel, so 16 gauge is thicker than 18 gauge. That is a general fact about sheet and tube gauge, and the listings do not compare the chairs’ real strength. The CAL-117 statement is a fire-code claim for the NPS upholstery, and we have not seen the document.
Cushioning and comfort
