Quick answer
A queen Murphy bed gives a 60 by 80 inch sleeping surface that folds into a cabinet or chest. The size is the easy part; the hard parts are the open length, the room width and the wall. A typical U.S. queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches, which is our assumption; check any listing that mentions a different standard.

We read three on Amazon on 2026-10-01: the HomeStock queen Murphy bed chest with a 6 inch mattress, the KEIKI queen vertical cabinet with a desk, and a queen cabinet bed whose listing says “Queen (U.K. Standard).” We have not tested any of them. Every figure comes from the listings, and where a listing contradicts itself we say so.
Three listings, side by side
| Listing | Kind | Closed size | Open size | Load stated | Weight | Buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HomeStock Queen Murphy Bed Chest with 6″ Mattress, Drawer, Charger | chest, no wall mounting | 22.75 L x 62.38 W x 41.75 H in | 79.38 L x 62.38 W x 41.75 H in | not stated | not stated | View on Amazon |
| KEIKI Queen Vertical Cabinet Murphy Bed with Integrated Desk | wall-mounted cabinet | 64.96 x 15.75 x 85.04 in (as listed) | not stated | 1,102 lb when wall-mounted | 85.7 lb | View on Amazon |
| Cabinet Bed with Storage, Queen, Folding Foam Mattress and Drawer | cabinet bed | 61.5 x 78.25 x 40.25 in (as listed) | not stated | 300 lb | 193.1 lb | View on Amazon |
Contradictions to know about. The cabinet bed’s table says its size is “Queen (U.K. Standard),” and gives 61.5 by 78.25 by 40.25 inches with the length and width apparently swapped, plus an item depth of 23.8 inches. A U.K. queen can differ from a U.S. queen, so ask the seller for the exact mattress dimensions before you buy sheets. The KEIKI listing gives 64.96 by 15.75 by 85.04 inches, which we read as about 65 inches wide, 15.75 inches deep and 85 inches high when closed; it does not say so in words and does not give the open depth. The HomeStock listing’s bullets give both closed and open sizes, which is helpful, but no load limit in the text we read.
Queen versus full
A queen is 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a full, using typical sizes of 60 by 80 and 54 by 75 inches, our assumption. For a room that is 10 feet wide, a queen leaves 120 − 60 = 60 inches for side space, which is 30 inches each side if centered, enough for a nightstand. A full leaves 120 − 54 = 66. The extra width also changes the cabinet: the HomeStock closed chest is 62.38 inches wide, against the 55.13 inch width of a full-size desk-chest in our Murphy bed with desk guide.
Fit check: a 10 by 11 foot guest room
The room is 120 by 132 inches. The bed will be on the 132 inch wall, opening into the 120 inch depth. A rule of thumb for a walking route is 30 inches.
- HomeStock, closed: 22.75 × 62.38 = 1,419 square inches, 9.9 square feet. Open: 79.38 × 62.38 = 4,952 square inches, 34.4 square feet. Opening multiplies the floor use by 34.4 ÷ 9.9 = 3.5. The open bed reaches 79.38 inches into the room, leaving 120 − 79.38 = 40.6 inches, which clears 30 by 10.6.
- Width along the wall: 62.38 inches takes 62.38 ÷ 132 = 47 percent of the 132 inch wall, leaving 69.6 inches for a window, door or dresser.
- KEIKI: a queen mattress is about 80 inches long, so an open vertical bed reaches at least 80 inches from the wall by our assumption, leaving 120 − 80 = 40 inches. Closed, it is 85.04 inches tall, so in an 8 foot room 96 − 85.04 = 10.96 inches of ceiling remains.
- Cabinet bed: if 78.25 inches is the length and 61.5 the width, open it needs at least 78.25 inches, leaving 41.75 inches.
All three clear 30 inches in this room. In a 108 inch deep room (9 feet), the HomeStock leaves 108 − 79.38 = 28.6 inches, which falls under the 30 inch estimate. Measure your room, and add a nightstand or a lamp that sits at the bed’s side.
Wall mounting and safety
The HomeStock listing says it needs no complex wall mounting or professional installation, and the cabinet bed’s listing does not mention it in the text we read. The KEIKI listing says it must be anchored to a structural wall by a qualified professional with 2 to 4 adults, and not attached to drywall. A wall bed carries a sleeper over an opening mechanism; the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2018 recall of one maker’s Murphy bed hardware kits was because the hardware that secured the wooden wall enclosures to the wall studs did not provide sufficient bracing, posing tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children. That recall concerns a different brand. It shows why a wall-mounted bed should be anchored to studs by someone who knows how. CPSC’s Anchor It! campaign also advises securing heavy furniture to prevent tip-overs.
Load and mattress
A queen bed commonly holds two adults. The cabinet bed lists a 300 pound maximum, which two adults of 160 pounds each would exceed: 320 pounds before bedding. The HomeStock gives no limit in the text we read, and the KEIKI gives 1,102 pounds. If two adults share the bed, 300 pounds is too low, so choose by the number that suits your sleepers.
The HomeStock mattress is 5 inches of high-density support foam under 1 inch of comfort foam, which is 6 inches in total. That is thin for nightly use. The mattresses sold in the U.S. are covered by the federal mattress flammability standards, 16 C.F.R. parts 1632 and 1633, as CPSC explains; none of the listings states a label in the text we read.
Bedding, comfort and daily use
A queen bed that folds away each morning needs a plan for the bedding. The HomeStock chest comes with an extra-large storage drawer for pillows and blankets, and its listing calls the mattress a 5 inch high-density support layer under a 1 inch comfort layer. A vertical bed such as the KEIKI lists a strap to keep the mattress aligned, so light bedding can stay on, but a thick duvet may not fit when the bed closes. Try a fitted sheet, a flat sheet and a light blanket, and keep pillows in the drawer or a nearby cupboard.
Think about who sleeps there and how often. A guest bed used a few nights a month tolerates a 6 inch mattress. A bed used nightly by a couple wants a thicker, firmer mattress, and a wall bed that takes a thick mattress will serve better, but we did not see a thickness range for the queen units here. Ask before you buy a mattress for any of them.
Lighting, outlets and the room around the bed
The listings mention built-in charging: the HomeStock has a nine-foot cord and two USB ports, and the cabinet bed lists sockets and USB ports. A reading lamp and a phone charger at the bed’s side are the real needs, so check where the outlet is and whether the cord reaches. Leave space for a lamp or a small table at the foot or side; a queen bed in a room less than 10 feet wide has little left for furniture once it is open.
Finally, think about noise and mechanics. A folding bed has hinges, springs or struts. Open and close it slowly the first few times, listen for rubbing, and do not let anyone sit on the bed while it is moving. If it feels stiff or uneven, stop and check the instructions.
Which one for which room
- HomeStock chest: no mounting, a storage drawer and a charger, with a closed depth of only 22.75 inches.
- KEIKI vertical: a real wall bed with a desk and the highest stated load, but a pro install.
- Cabinet bed: the heaviest at 193.1 pounds with the lowest stated load; check the mattress size.

How to choose
- Measure room width and depth, and add the open length.
- Check which queen: ask for the exact mattress size.
- Compare the load with two sleepers.
- Decide if you can anchor to studs.
- Ask about the mattress thickness and the flammability label.
A queen Murphy bed’s lift mechanism works harder than a twin or full version
The quick answer above covers the open length and wall needs for a queen-size Murphy bed; worth adding is that the lift mechanism itself scales with mattress size, and a queen mattress plus bedding is meaningfully heavier than a twin or full equivalent. Check that the specific mechanism, whether spring-assisted or piston-based, is rated for queen-size use specifically rather than a general Murphy bed rating that may have been tested primarily on a smaller size. A mechanism undersized for the actual mattress weight will feel harder to lift and lower than it should, and may wear out faster than one correctly matched to queen-size loads from the start.
Frequently asked questions
How much room does a queen Murphy bed need open?
About 80 inches from the wall, by our assumption of an 80 inch mattress. The HomeStock chest lists 79.38 inches open.
Is a queen Murphy bed heavy?
The cabinet bed lists 193.1 pounds and the KEIKI 85.7 pounds for the listed unit.
Do I need to mount it to the wall?
The HomeStock says no. The KEIKI says yes, by a professional.
Is “Queen (U.K. Standard)” the same as a U.S. queen?
Not necessarily. Ask for the exact dimensions.
Can two adults use it?
Check the load: 300 pounds on the cabinet bed is low for two adults.
