What rustic means in a listing

Rustic, farmhouse and industrial overlap. In these three listings the look is a brown or walnut wood finish with a black metal frame. The materials are the real information: MAHANCRIS lists engineered wood, the VASAGLE lists particleboard and steel and the HOOBRO particleboard on a metal frame. None of the three says solid wood.

That matters for weight and for wear. Engineered wood and particleboard are common and fine for a console, and they do not take a heavy knock as well as solid wood.

Sizing example: how much of the sofa the table covers

The arithmetic is 31.5 / 78.7 = 0.400, 39.4 / 78.7 = 0.501, and 47.2 / 78.7 = 0.600, and 78.7 − 31.5 = 47.2, 78.7 − 39.4 = 39.3 and 78.7 − 47.2 = 31.5. The common advice is that a table should be about the length of the sofa or a little shorter, and that is a rule of thumb and not a published rule. On that rule none of the three is close to full length, and the 31.5 inch table is an entry or end table used in a shorter spot.

Height: all three sit just under a sofa back

Load rating against the table’s own weight

Three listings state a load limit for the tabletop. The VASAGLE says it supports up to 55 lb on the tabletop and 55 lb on the lower shelf, which is 110 lb in total. The HOOBRO lists a maximum weight recommendation of 44 pounds. The MAHANCRIS lists 20 kg, which is 20 x 2.2046 = 44.1 lb.

The arithmetic is 55 / 16.8 = 3.27, 44 / 11.2 = 3.93 and 44.1 / 20.7 = 2.13. A table that is rated for many times its own weight is not necessarily stronger, because a rating is the seller’s figure for a static load. We read the ratio only as a sign of how light the table is for what it claims.

Power and cords

2. Pick a length near the sofa length if you want a full-length table.
