Drawer or shelf

A drawer hides clutter. It also costs depth, because a drawer box needs room inside the table, and it limits how narrow the table can be. The three tables here are 10.8 to 11.8 inches deep, which is about twice the 5.7 to 5.9 inches of the slim behind-couch tables in our other guide. If you need a table behind a sofa that sits in a tight gap, a drawer table may not fit, and an open shelf table is the better choice.

A drawer also needs clearance in front of it. A 12 inch deep table whose drawer opens 8 inches needs a gap you can stand in, which in practice means the table sits against a wall behind a floating sofa or at the side.

Sizing example: height against the sofa

OROA, a furniture retailer, says a side table should sit within about 2 inches of the sofa arm. It gives no rule for a table behind a sofa, so the back rule here is a rule of thumb: stay just below the back so the table does not rise above the sofa line. Take a sofa with a 32.7 inch back, the height we read for the Studio Living Harrington, and an arm of 24 inches.

The arithmetic is 32.7 − 31.8 = 0.9, 32.7 − 30 = 2.7, 32.7 − 23.6 = 9.1, 31.8 − 24 = 7.8, 30 − 24 = 6 and 24 − 23.6 = 0.4. The depth is 11.8 inches for the Ecoprsio, 11 inches for the Leick and 10.8 inches for the LITTLE TREE. Widths are 32, 30 and 23.6 inches. Against a sofa 78.7 inches wide, the Ecoprsio covers 32 / 78.7 = 40.7 percent of the length and the Leick 30 / 78.7 = 38.1 percent, so a drawer console is a short table beside a sofa and not a full-length one. OROA suggests 30 to 36 inches for main walkways, so a 12 inch deep table in a passage should leave one of those clear. Add the table’s depth to the path: 36 inches plus 11.8 inches of table needs about 47.8 inches of room.

Weight limits and load

The Leick lists a maximum weight recommendation of 35 pounds, and the LITTLE TREE 40 pounds. The Ecoprsio lists none in the rows we read. A lamp, a plant and a few books can come close to 35 lb, and drawer contents count too, so check what you plan to carry. The Leick is solid wood, and the LITTLE TREE is engineered wood with a stated weight of 33 lb for the table itself, so the table is nearly as heavy as the load it is rated for. That ratio is a simple sign of how sturdy it is built, and it is an inference and not the sellers’ claim.

Outlets and cords

The Ecoprsio is the only one with power: two USB ports and two regular outlets, with a cord the bullets describe as 6.5 feet. A table with outlets still needs a wall socket within reach of the cord. If the socket is behind the sofa, check the cord against the distance, and keep it off the walkway.

Assembly and materials

The LITTLE TREE ships fully assembled, which suits anyone who does not want to build furniture. The Ecoprsio needs assembly with numbered parts, with no extra tools listed. The Leick lists easy assembly with pre-assembled drawers. Materials differ: the Ecoprsio is an engineered wood top on a metal frame, the Leick is solid wood and the LITTLE TREE is engineered wood. Questions to send the seller

Drawer tables leave out details that decide whether they work in your room. Ask how far the drawers open and whether they have stops, because a drawer that slides out fully can fall when loaded. Ask for the inside size of each drawer, since the outside depth of 10.8 to 11.8 inches leaves less inside once the walls are counted. Ask whether the weight limit applies to the top, to each drawer or to the whole table, and what material the drawer bottoms are. If you plan to put the table behind a sofa, ask whether the back is finished, because the back will face the room. These are our suggestions and not requirements in any listing.
