What a behind sofa table is for
It is a narrow console that stands behind a sofa that floats in the room, so it works as a divider and a shelf. People use it for a lamp, a drink, books and, in the listings here, a charging station with built-in outlets. Because it sits behind you, it should not catch your head or your shoulders, so height and depth both matter.
Depth is the easy part. Console tables of this kind are about 6 inches deep in these listings, so the sofa plus the table is only a few inches deeper than the sofa alone.
Height: just under the sofa back
A table behind a sofa should not stand above the sofa back, or it blocks the line of the sofa and can bump a head leaning back. A table of 29.7 inches is 32.7 − 29.7 = 3 inches lower than the Harrington’s back, and 32.5 − 29.7 = 2.8 inches lower than the Modway’s.
OROA, a furniture retailer, says a coffee table should sit level with the sofa seat or up to 2 inches lower, and a side table within about 2 inches of the sofa arm. It does not give a rule for tables behind a sofa, so the height advice here is our own planning estimate: stay below the back and above the seat. A table that is 1 to 4 inches below the back gives a clean line.
Length: how long should it be
There is no standard. The common advice is that the table should be about as long as the sofa, or a little shorter. Treat that as our planning estimate and not as a published rule.
Worked example. Say your sofa is 78.7 inches wide, like the Harrington. Here is how each table compares.

For an 85 inch sofa, such as the Vesgantti we read for another guide, the Huuger would be 25.2 inches longer, the SUPERJARE 6.2 inches shorter and the VASMIA 14.1 inches shorter. A table much longer than the sofa leans into the room and is meant for sectionals, which the Huuger’s bullets say outright, calling it extra long for sectionals. The SUPERJARE is made of two 39.4 inch tables, so you can place them with a gap, or split them to two spots.
Depth and the gap behind the sofa
At 5.7 to 5.9 inches deep these tables are thin enough that a lamp base can overhang. If you plan a lamp, check its base diameter against the table depth. A sofa that is 31.5 inches deep, like the Harrington, plus a 5.9 inch table is 37.4 inches of floor from the front of the sofa to the back of the table, before any gap. Leave room for the table to be reached from behind; OROA suggests 30 to 36 inches for main walkways, so if the back of the table faces a path, count that distance from the table’s far edge.
Outlets and cords
All three tables in this guide advertise outlets. The Huuger’s bullets describe 2 AC outlets, 1 USB port and 1 USB-C port on each power strip. The SUPERJARE’s highlight reads 2 AC outlets with USB-C ports. The VASMIA’s bullets describe standard 120 volt AC outlets and USB ports with a 6.5 foot power cord. The tables still need a wall socket, so the cord has to reach one. Measure from the table position to the nearest outlet, then check the listed cord length. We did not read a rated wattage in the rows we checked, so do not plug in heating appliances without checking the listing’s electrical specification.
A cord running across a walkway is a trip hazard. If the wall socket is far away, run the cord along a baseboard or choose another plan.
Material and weight
The three differ in material. The Huuger is engineered wood with metal legs and weighs 23.1 lb. The SUPERJARE is sold as two pieces, and the table lists 9 pounds, which is likely per piece. The VASMIA is bamboo, 15.52 lb, and its listing calls the bamboo FSC certified. A 110 inch table that weighs 23.1 lb is light for its length, so check the leg design and the anti-bump pads the Huuger listing mentions if the table stands in a spot where people pass. The bullets describe a 5.9 inch narrow depth, 120 volt outlets, USB ports and a 6.5 foot cord. Good if you prefer natural bamboo. Keep in mind: at 70.87 inches it is shorter than a typical three-seat sofa, so the sofa will stand wider than the table.
How to choose
- Measure the sofa’s width and its back height.
- Choose a table length within about 8 inches of the sofa width, by our own estimate.
- Choose a height 1 to 4 inches under the back.
- Count the distance from the table to the wall socket against the cord.
- Check the lamp base against the 5.7 to 5.9 inch depth.
