Quick answer

A tall kitchen table is a table at counter height or higher, so you sit on stools rather than chairs. KitchenAid describes counter height surfaces as typically 35 to 40 inches tall and bar height as usually 41 to 43 inches, with counter stools usually 24 to 27 inches and bar stools 28 to 33 inches. The three tables we read on Amazon on 2026-10-01 are all counter height, at 35.4, 35.6 and 36 inches.

They are a 48 by 30 inch counter-height dining table in acacia and rubberwood, a 70.9 inch long narrow bar table with a power strip, and a 35.4 inch pub table with a charging station. We have not tested any of them. Every figure comes from the listings, and where a listing contradicts itself we say so.

Contradictions to know about. The East West table lists a frame of acacia wood and a top of rubber wood, and lists “Seating Capacity 6” for a 48 inch table, which is tight, as we show below. The CHOEZON gives a weight of 13.9 kilograms, which is 13.9 × 2.2046 = 30.6 pounds. The HOOBRO gives its load as 88 pounds and says four triangular structures support the top. The CHOEZON lists a comparison chart of other tables with a height of 1.6 inches for one entry, which is clearly an error and does not affect the table itself.

What the numbers mean for stools

The gap between the seat and the tabletop is the height of the table minus the seat height. A 36 inch table with a 24 inch stool leaves 12 inches, with a 25 inch stool 11 inches, and with a 27 inch stool 9 inches. KitchenAid’s ranges put counter stools at 24 to 27 inches, which means gaps of 9 to 12 inches on a 36 inch table. A 35.4 inch table with a 24 inch stool leaves 11.4 inches. For stool shopping, see our bar stools guide.

Fit check: three tables in a small kitchen

Take a kitchen where the wall is 96 inches long and the room is 120 inches deep. A good rule of thumb for seating is 24 inches of table edge per person. The U.S. Access Board’s accessible-route guidance, written for public buildings, gives a 36 inch minimum continuous clear width for a route; treat it only as a rough yardstick at home.

  • CHOEZON 70.9 by 15.7: along the 96 inch wall it leaves 96 − 70.9 = 25.1 inches. Stools go on one side, so 70.9 ÷ 24 = 2.95, which is 2 comfortable places and a tight third at 23.6 inches each. Depth: 15.7 inches of table plus a stool pulled out to sit, about 24 inches from the edge by our assumption, is 15.7 + 24 = 39.7 inches from the wall, leaving 120 − 39.7 = 80.3 inches of room depth.
  • HOOBRO 35.4 by 15.7: 35.4 ÷ 24 = 1.5, so one stool, or two very close together at 17.7 inches each. It uses 35.4 × 15.7 = 556 square inches, 3.9 square feet.
  • East West 48 by 30: 48 ÷ 24 = 2 per long side, so 4, plus one at each 30 inch end, which is 30 ÷ 24 = 1.25, so 6 in all, matching the listing. Its footprint is 48 × 30 = 1,440 square inches, 10 square feet. With a 24 inch chair zone on every side the dining zone is (48 + 48) × (30 + 48) = 96 × 78 = 7,488 square inches, 52 square feet, in a 120 by 96 inch room of 80 square feet. That is 65 percent of the room, so it suits an eat-in kitchen, not a galley.

For a galley or a small room, the narrow tables win: the CHOEZON zone is (70.9 + 0) × (15.7 + 24) = 70.9 × 39.7 = 2,815 square inches, 19.5 square feet, because stools sit on one side only.

Narrow versus full-width tall tables

  • Narrow bar tables (15.7 inches deep) hold plates and a laptop but not a full place setting with a serving dish. They suit a wall or the back of a sofa, as a breakfast bar for two or a work-from-home perch. The CHOEZON and the HOOBRO list outlets, which is handy, but check where the cord reaches.
  • Full-width counter tables (30 inches deep) seat people on both sides and handle a real meal. The East West is that kind.

Strength and stability

The East West lists 250 pounds, the CHOEZON 220 pounds and the HOOBRO 88 pounds. A load of 88 pounds is enough for a laptop and a coffee but not for a person leaning on it. A tall narrow table is also easier to tip: height divided by depth is our rough indicator, not a standard. HOOBRO 35.6 ÷ 15.7 = 2.3; CHOEZON 35.4 ÷ 15.7 = 2.3; East West 36 ÷ 30 = 1.2. The narrow ones carry both a crossbar and adjustable feet according to the HOOBRO listing, and X-shaped pipes, triangular supports and footrests according to the CHOEZON listing. Do not sit or lean on the table’s edge.

Materials

The East West is acacia and rubber wood. The CHOEZON and HOOBRO are particleboard with metal frames. Composite wood products, including particleboard, are covered by the EPA’s formaldehyde emission standards, and a compliance label may be present. The listings do not state labels in the text we read. Wipe tops with a damp cloth and dry them, and use mats for hot dishes.

Assembly and setup

All three need assembly. The East West says an Allen key is the tool and that all tools come in the box; the HOOBRO and CHOEZON say instructions are clear and numbered. Tighten the screws after a month. A tall table on a hard floor benefits from felt pads or adjustable feet, which the HOOBRO lists.

Living with a tall table

A tall table changes how a kitchen feels. It puts you closer to eye level with people standing at the counter, so it works for quick breakfasts, homework and coffee, and less well for long dinners, since stools without backs are tiring. If you want to sit for a long meal, choose stools with low backs and a footrest bar or a table with a footrest, which the CHOEZON lists. Kids and older relatives may find a 36 inch table high to climb onto, so think about who will use it.

Lighting and cables matter more on a narrow bar table. The CHOEZON and HOOBRO both list a built-in power strip with 2 outlets and 2 USB ports; plug it into a wall outlet, not an extension chain, and keep liquids away from the strip. Leave a gap behind the table so cords do not bend sharply. If you use the table as a standing desk, which at 35 to 36 inches is close to a standing height for many people, our guide to what height a desk should be explains how to check elbow height; OSHA’s workstation guidance describes elbows bent between 90 and 120 degrees.

Which one for which kitchen

  • East West 48 by 30: a real dining table at counter height with the highest stated load, for an eat-in kitchen.
  • CHOEZON 70.9 inch: a long, slim breakfast bar for a wall, seating two or three on one side.
  • HOOBRO 35.4 inch: a pub or coffee table, light duty.

How to choose

  1. Decide the height: counter (about 36 inches) or bar (about 42).
  2. Choose stools whose seat height leaves 9 to 12 inches under the top.
  3. Count seats at 24 inches of edge per person.
  4. Compute the dining zone against your room.
  5. Check the stated load.
