Why lift a sofa

People raise a sofa for three reasons: to make a low seat easier to stand up from, to make room underneath for storage or a robot vacuum, or to level a sofa that sits low against a table. The listings here mention all three, plus raising a sofa to keep pet hair from collecting underneath.

POVISON’s guide gives about 17 to 19 inches of seat height for most adults. A riser changes the seat height by exactly its lift, which is the whole point, and a riser does not change the depth or the back.

Worked example: how much lift

Say your sofa has a seat height of 15 inches, as several of the low sofas we read for other guides do. The target is 17 to 19 inches, so the lift you want is 2 to 4 inches. These numbers are an example we chose. Here is how the risers fit.

The arithmetic is 15 + 2 = 17, 15 + 2.7 = 17.7, 15 + 3 = 18, 15 + 4.3 = 19.3, 15 + 4 = 19 and 15 + 6 = 21. A seat above 19 inches can be easier to stand up from, which is our general observation and not a statement in POVISON’s guide, and it also makes it harder to rest your feet flat on the floor. Our own advice is to lift in the smallest step that gets you into range.

The Akqioqe listing is inconsistent: its title says 2 inch, its dimensions row says 2.7 inches tall and a bullet says 3 inch. Ask the seller which is true.

Load per riser

A capacity is stated for the set. Divide by four to find the per-riser load, and compare with the load on each leg.

The arithmetic is 1,100 / 4 = 275, 4,000 / 4 = 1,000, 6,000 / 4 = 1,500 and 6,500 / 4 = 1,625. Now take a sofa like the Vesgantti we read for another guide, with a listed weight of 101.5 lb and a listed capacity of 900 lb. The total is 101.5 + 900 = 1,001.5 lb. On four legs that is about 250 lb a leg, since 1,001.5 / 4 = 250.4. That is 250.4 / 275 = 91 percent of the Akqioqe’s per-riser number, and 25 percent of the 1,000 lb of the adjustable set. The listings do not say whether a stated capacity is per set or per riser, and we assumed per set, which is the more cautious reading.

A rated capacity is a seller’s figure for a static load. A sofa with a person dropping into it sees a spike. Use the highest capacity you can, and use all four risers on a four-legged sofa. A sofa with six legs spreads the load, and the same sofa on six legs is 167 lb a leg.

Fit: the riser has to hold the leg

The risers differ in shape.

• The Adjustable set is L-shaped on a half side, which the bullets say makes it easier to match with different legs and stops small feet from moving. It comes as 1.5, 3 and 4.3 inch layers that stack, and its title adds 5.3.
• The 6 inch oversized set is L-shaped for legs smaller than 6.7 by 4.3 inches, with triangular non-slip cones and a rubber bottom edge.
• The 4 inch set has an L shape with a 4.5 inch width and a 4 inch height.
• The Akqioqe is a 2.9 by 2.9 inch stackable block with a non-slip design.

Measure the foot of your sofa leg before you pick. A round leg 2 inches across sits in a 2.9 inch square block, and a wide block leg may not. Some sofas have no legs at all, and then an L-shaped block under each corner is the only option. The riser must also be larger than the foot so the leg does not sit on an edge.

Stability and stacking

The Adjustable and Akqioqe listings say their risers stack. Stacking adds height and also adds a place where the stack can shift, and a tall narrow stack is less stable than a short wide one. That is our reasoning and not a claim from the listings. If you need more than about 3 inches, a single tall riser with a wide base, like the 6 inch oversized, is the steadier design. Install with two people for a heavy sofa, as the 4 inch listing advises, and keep the sofa from tipping.

Materials and floors

The Adjustable set lists 80 percent plastic and 20 percent TPU with a rough top and a slip-resistant TPU base. The 6 inch oversized lists PP with TPU rubber at the bottom edge that the listing says protects floors. The Akqioqe lists plastic and rubber. A rubber base keeps the riser from sliding and from scratching a hard floor. On carpet, check that the base is wide enough not to sink.

Keep in mind: the title lists 5.3 inches and the bullets stop at 4.3, so confirm the heights.

Bed Risers 6 Inch Heavy Duty, Oversized Couch Risers, Extra Wide Furniture Risers (B0CWHHJPHQ). The listing gives a 6 inch lift, a capacity of 6,000 lb, 4.4 lb, an L-shape for legs smaller than 6.7 by 4.3 inches and a trapezoid body with non-slip cones. Good for a big lift and a wide base. Keep in mind: 6 inches is more than most people need on a sofa.

Bed Risers 4 inch Heavy Duty, 4 Pack Oversized Furniture Risers (B0C3VBSSK8). The table gives 4.5 x 4.5 x 4 in, 2.72 lb and a listed capacity of 6,500 lb. The bullets describe an L-shaped half wrap that suits wide legs or no legs and advise installing with two people. Good for the top of the target range from a 15 inch seat. Keep in mind: it is one fixed height.

How to choose

1. Measure the seat height and decide the lift that brings it to 17 to 19 inches.
2. Measure the sofa foot and pick a riser that is larger than it.
3. Work out the load per leg and keep well under the per-riser capacity.
4. Prefer a single riser to a tall stack.
5. Install with a second person and check the sofa is level.
