Why a sofa mattress is not a bed mattress

A sleeper sofa hides a bed inside the seat, so the mattress folds in three and slides into a mechanism. That limits the length and the thickness. Puffy lists a twin as 38 by 72, a full as 53 by 72 and a queen as 60 by 72 inches, and says a thick topper makes the mattress hard to fold back into the sofa. It recommends a 2 to 3 inch topper of memory foam or latex for added comfort, and says to make sure the new mattress aligns with the dimensions of the fold-out mechanism.

So the mattress is shorter than a bed mattress and thin. A regular queen mattress, which Casper lists as 60 by 80 inches, will not fit.

Worked example: length and width against the standard

Puffy’s queen sofa bed mattress is 60 x 72 inches, which is 60 x 72 = 4,320 sq in. A regular queen is 60 x 80 = 4,800 sq in. Here are the four listings.

The arithmetic is 59 x 72 = 4,248, and 4,248 / 4,320 = 0.983; and 58 x 72 = 4,176, and 4,176 / 4,320 = 0.967. All four are 1 or 2 inches narrower than the 60 inch standard, which fits inside a frame that is 60 wide with a small gap. The Srora’s own page lists 59 inches in the table and 58 inches in the size chart, so the width could be either.

The length of 72 inches is 8 inches shorter than a regular queen. Say you are 70 inches tall, which is 5 ft 10 in. A 72 inch mattress leaves 72 − 70 = 2 inches for your head and feet, with no pillow room, so a taller sleeper will hang over the end. That is an example we chose, not a standard.

Measure the frame

Do three measurements before you buy.

1. Measure the mattress you have, or the mattress platform in the frame, from edge to edge in width and length.
2. Measure the thickness of the old mattress.
3. Fold the bed closed and check how much room the mattress has in the sofa.

A search for sleeper sofa mattress sizes also turns up queen frames of 58 and 64 inches wide, and some frames of 60 by 70 or 60 by 66, depending on the maker. That comes from search summaries and not from a page we opened, so measure your own frame rather than relying on a size name. If your frame is different, choose the nearest size that is not larger than the platform.

Thickness: why 4 to 4.5 inches

A thicker mattress is more comfortable and less likely to fold. The difference between 4 and 4.5 inches is 0.5 inches, and a frame with little spare room can make that half inch the difference between closing and not closing. Check your frame, and if in doubt choose the thinner one.

Weight, expansion and care

Weights are 17.6 lb for the Srora, 23.1 lb for the green tea, 25.9 lb for the 4.5 inch memory foam and 26.2 lb for the 4.5 inch gel. The gel mattress lists a weight capacity of 500 pounds. All four ship vacuum-packed, and the listings say to allow 24 to 72 hours for the foam to expand.

Care differs and contradicts itself. The Srora says its jacquard cover is removable and machine washable. The 4.5 inch gel lists care as both hand wash only and machine wash, so ask. The green tea lists hand wash only, with a zipper cover that is removable and a non-slip granular bottom. The 4.5 inch memory foam lists machine wash on a jacquard cover. Keep the foam core out of the washer. Certifications

The Srora and the two 4.5 inch mattresses list CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX certification, and the green tea mattress lists the same in its bullets. Those are the sellers’ statements, and we did not check the certificates. CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX are names of third-party programs, and a certificate number on a listing is the way to confirm it.
