Quick answer
If a guest sleeps over a few nights a year and the room is tight, a folding floor couch is the smallest and lightest way to get a sleeping surface, and its closed footprint can be as little as 25 inches deep. If the same person sleeps on it every week, choose a pull-out sleeper or a daybed, because a thin folding foam pad on the floor is a poor bed for repeated use. If you want one piece that never needs converting, buy a daybed and skip the mechanism altogether. The rest of this guide shows how to pick between them with numbers.
The four types and what each one costs you in space
1. Pull-out sleeper (hide-a-bed). A mattress folded inside the frame under the seat cushions. Guide sources put the closed width at about 54 to 90 inches and the closed depth at about 32 to 40 inches, and the open length from the sofa back to the foot of the bed at about 72 to 90 inches (Bolon Home). The mattress inside is thin: Mattress Insider says most sofa beds take a mattress 4 to 5 inches thick, and a queen sleeper mattress is 58 by 72 or 60 by 72 inches, shorter than a normal queen. These are the heaviest option, so the doorway and stairs matter as much as the room. The dedicated guide to the queen hide-a-bed couch covers the queen size in detail.
2. Folding floor couch (tri-fold or “boneless”). A foam pad with removable arms that folds into a low sofa. It has no metal mechanism, so it is light (the two listings checked below are 40 and 48 pounds), but the seat is low and you convert it by unfolding it on the floor.
3. Futon frame. A wooden or metal frame that folds a futon mattress flat. Banner Mattress lists futon mattress sizes as twin 39 by 75 inches, full 54 by 75 and queen 60 by 80, and notes that tri-fold frames need thinner mattresses of 5 to 6 inches while bi-fold frames can take up to 12 inches if the frame allows it. See also our guide to the futon sofa bed.
4. Daybed. A bed frame with a back and arms that reads as a sofa. It never converts, which is the point: the sleeping surface is always ready. The trade-off is that a twin daybed seats people in a long, shallow row and is not as deep as a normal couch. Our guide to using a daybed as a couch works through that.
Compare them on the numbers that decide fit
| Type | Sleeps (typical) | Closed footprint from the listings or guides | Converts by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pull-out sleeper | Two, on a 58 to 60 by 72 inch mattress | 54 to 90 in wide, 32 to 40 in deep | Pulling a frame out over the floor |
| Folding floor couch, queen | Two, on a folded foam pad | 60 in wide, 25.2 in deep (one listing) | Unfolding on the floor |
| Folding floor couch, loveseat | One, or two who accept tight | 55 in wide, 29 in deep (one listing) | Unfolding on the floor |
| Folding chair bed, twin | One | 39 in wide, 29.5 in deep (one listing) | Unfolding on the floor |
| Futon frame | One or two, by mattress size | Depends on the frame | Lowering the back |
| Daybed | One, on a twin mattress | Frame is longer than the mattress | None |
The pattern is that the more comfortable and solid the sleeping surface, the bigger the machine. A folding floor couch is the one type where the closed footprint is small and the sleeping surface is large, and the trade-off is comfort and seat height.
Worked example: fitting each type into a 12 by 10 foot room
Say the room is 12 feet by 10 feet, which is 144 by 120 inches, and the couch goes on the 10-foot wall. Bolon Home advises leaving at least 24 inches of walking clearance at the foot of an open bed. We will use that as a yardstick, not a rule.
- Pull-out with a 90 inch open length: 144 minus 90 leaves 54 inches; minus the 24 inch walkway leaves 30 inches for anything else, such as a coffee table, which you will have to move.
- Folding queen floor couch lying flat at a standard queen length of 80 inches: 144 minus 80 leaves 64 inches; minus 24 leaves 40 inches. The listing we checked gives the folded size but its measurements table does not give a flat length, so 80 inches is the standard queen length from the Amerisleep chart, not a figure from the listing.
- Twin chair bed: the listing gives a 39 inch width. Standard twin length is 75 inches, so it needs 75 inches of floor when flat; that leaves 144 minus 75 equals 69 inches, and 45 inches after the walkway.
The lesson is not that one type wins. It is that a pull-out sleeper in this room eats 10 inches more of the floor than the folding queen, in exchange for a real frame and a bed you do not have to build every night.
Match the type to how often the bed is used
Guests once or twice a year. A folding floor couch or a twin chair bed. You can store it folded, and you will not notice the thin foam for two nights. If the folded couch will stand in the room all year as a sofa, check the seat height: the two loveseat and queen listings below give 13.5 and 16 inches, which is lower than many people expect from a couch.
Guests every month. A pull-out sleeper or a daybed. Go for the pull-out if the room needs a proper sofa the rest of the time, and for the daybed if it needs to look like a bedroom and the sofa role is secondary.
Someone sleeps there every night. Do not use a convertible as the main bed. Every convertible here has a thin mattress, and a thin mattress plus a mechanism you must operate daily wears out. Buy a real bed frame and use a compact sofa elsewhere.

We have not tested these; the numbers are from the Amazon measurement tables and bullet lists.
Erament tri-fold sofa bed, queen. The measurements table gives 25.2 inches deep, 60 inches wide, 23.2 inches high, a weight of 40 pounds, an included mattress size of queen, a seat height of 13.5 inches and an arm width of 9 inches. The bullets say the foam is 5 inches thick and the cover is corduroy with a washable design. The table does not give a flat length. Best for: a guest who will sleep two nights, not a daily sofa, since the seat is only 13.5 inches from the floor.
cidludto boneless loveseat sleeper, 55 inch. The table gives 29 inches deep, 55 inches wide, 27 inches high, 48 pounds, seat height 16 inches, a weight capacity of 250 pounds and seating for two. The listing calls it a two-in-one and says the cushion has a removable zippered cover. Best for: one adult who wants a small couch that folds flat; the 250 pound limit is the lowest of the three, so check it if two adults will share it.
HILERO folding sofa bed chair, twin. The table gives 29.5 inches deep, 39 inches wide, 24 inches high, 27 pounds and a weight capacity of 300 pounds; the listing includes a storage bag and a pillow. The listing shows a seat height of 24 inches, which equals the overall height, so we would not rely on that figure. Best for: a single sleeper in a small room where the chair-bed can live in a corner; it is the lightest of the three.
Mistakes to avoid
Measuring only the closed couch. The open length decides whether you can use it.
Forgetting the doorway. A pull-out sleeper is heavy and a folded floor couch is bulky in its box. Measure the narrowest door, hall turn and stair on the way to the room.
Buying a floor couch as a daily seat. A 13.5 inch seat height suits a floor lounge, not a dining-height habit.
Assuming the mattress can be swapped. On a pull-out, a thicker mattress can stop the frame from closing; the sources above put the usual limit at 4 to 5 inches.
Ignoring weight limits. Two of the three listings above state one; the Erament measurements table shows none, so ask the seller if it matters.
When you may not need a couch that turns into a bed
If you host guests only a few nights a year, an air mattress or a fold-away guest mattress stored in a closet costs less and takes no floor space the rest of the year. If someone in the home needs to sleep there every night, a real bed will serve them better. Buy a convertible only when the room truly needs to be a living room for most of the year and a bedroom for a few nights.

Frequently asked questions
What is a couch that turns into a bed called?
Sleeper sofa, sofa bed, hide-a-bed, pull-out couch, convertible couch and futon are the common names. Pull-out sleepers hide a mattress in the frame; futons and floor couches fold flat; daybeds do not convert.
How big is the bed when a sofa bed is open?
Bolon Home puts the open length from the sofa back to the foot of the bed at about 72 to 90 inches. A queen sleeper mattress is 58 or 60 by 72 inches according to Mattress Insider, so measure the specific model.
How thick is a sofa bed mattress?
Mattress Insider says most sofa beds take a mattress 4 to 5 inches thick. Bolon Home gives 3 to 6 inches for pull-out sleepers. A thicker mattress can stop the frame from closing.
Is a couch that turns into a bed comfortable enough for nightly use?
Usually not. The mattress is thin and the frame is a mechanism, so these are designed for guests. For nightly sleep, a regular bed is the better choice.
How much room do I need around an open sofa bed?
Bolon Home recommends at least 24 to 30 inches at the foot of the open bed and 18 to 24 inches at the sides. Treat these as targets and confirm them in your room with tape on the floor.
