Quick answer
A small recliner is small only when upright. The number that decides whether it fits a small room is the reclined depth, because a chair that is 34 inches deep upright can be 61 inches long when leaned back. Check the width, the reclined depth, the back clearance to the wall, the doorway width it needs and the weight rating.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-10-02: the Lexicon corduroy pushback recliner (ASIN B0DJ8VDPFJ), the Christopher Knight Home Mason mid-century tufted-back recliner (B073Z7MQM8) and the BestMassage recliner with a 2-point massage function (B07YXVF4K2). They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat in any of them, and we do not show prices; check the current price on Amazon. Every number comes from the listings.

Upright size
The Lexicon listing gives 27 inches wide, 34 deep and 39.5 high. The Christopher Knight Home Mason listing gives 27 inches wide by 34.25 deep by 38 high (27.25 and 34.25 in its detail field). The BestMassage listing gives 33 inches deep, 26 wide and 39 high in its detail field, and a different order in another field.
The upright footprints are about 27 × 34 = 918 square inches for the Lexicon, 27.25 × 34.25 ≈ 933 for the Mason and 26 × 33 = 858 for the BestMassage, which is roughly 6 to 6.5 square feet. These are compact for recliners, and the Lexicon and Mason are within a few inches of each other.
Reclined depth and the wall
This is the number that most listings omit. The Lexicon listing gives a reclined depth of 61 inches and a back clearance of 16.5 inches. The other two listings did not give a reclined depth in the text we read.
A worked example with illustrative numbers. Your room is 10 feet (120 inches) wide and the recliner sits against a wall, facing the room. With a reclined depth of 61 inches, the chair uses 61 inches of the length, which leaves 120 − 61 = 59 inches in front of the footrest to the opposite wall. If you also want a 30 inch path at the side of the chair, you need 30 inches more, so check the whole layout. The back clearance of 16.5 inches is how far the chair needs to be from the wall to recline fully; in a small room, that eats into the usable floor.
A push-back recliner has no motor and moves as you push the back and lift the footrest, and it usually needs less clearance than a rocker or glider recliner, which is a general pattern and not a statement from the listings.
Doorway width
The Lexicon listing says a doorway width of 20 inches, which is the minimum door opening the chair needs to get through when it is assembled in the way described. That is a rare detail and a useful one: an apartment door can be narrower than you think.
The other two listings did not give a doorway width. The Lexicon needs assembly (the listing says it requires assembly with tools included), which also helps in a narrow stairwell, since the back and parts can be carried in separately.
Seat height and arms
The Lexicon listing gives a seat height of 18 inches, a seat depth of 19.5 inches and an arm height of 22.5 inches. The Mason listing gave a width, depth and height but no seat height in the text we read. The BestMassage listing did not give a seat height in the text we read.
An 18 inch seat is a normal height, and an arm of 22.5 inches is 4.5 inches above the seat. A shallow 19.5 inch seat suits shorter legs. If you are tall, you may want a deeper seat.
Weight rating
The Lexicon lists a maximum weight recommendation of 300 pounds. The BestMassage listing says its hardwood structure supports up to 275 pounds. The Mason rating was not recorded in the text we read.
A worked example. A 220 pound adult on a 275 pound rating has 55 pounds of headroom, 20 percent. On 300 pounds it is 80 pounds, about 27 percent. A recliner is loaded harder when you drop into it and push the footrest up, so a bigger margin is wise. These are the sellers’ figures.
Weight of the chair
The Lexicon weighs 54 pounds. The other two weights were not recorded. A 54 pound chair is a one-person carry up a short flight of stairs, and light enough to move for cleaning.
Massage and extras
The BestMassage chair has a 2-point vibration massage with 8 modes for the lumbar area, a push-back recliner and wide arms, according to its listing, with assembly in about 2 minutes and no tools. Vibration needs a power source, and the listing does not say how it is powered in the text we read.
The Lexicon is a plain corduroy push-back recliner. The Mason has a button-tufted back and tapered beech legs, a mid-century look. If you want a quiet, no-cord recliner, the Lexicon and Mason are the plainer choices.
Fabric and legs
The Lexicon is corduroy over foam on a metal and wood frame with rubberwood legs. The Mason is 100 percent polyester fabric with a button-tufted waffle stitch and beech wood legs. The BestMassage is faux leather over a hardwood structure.
Corduroy and polyester fabrics are soft and can hold pet hair. Faux leather wipes clean and can crack with age. Legs of 4 to 6 inches above the floor make it easier to clean under, which is a general benefit and not a listing claim.
The three listings we read
Lexicon Corduroy Pushback Recliner Chair, Light Gray (ASIN B0DJ8VDPFJ). The listing gives 27 by 34 by 39.5 inches, a reclined depth of 61 inches, a back clearance of 16.5 inches, a doorway width of 20 inches, a seat height of 18 inches, a seat depth of 19.5 inches, a weight of 54 pounds and a 300 pound rating. Good for: the most complete numbers for a small room. Keep in mind: a reclined depth of 61 inches is not small. The page showed no Add to Cart button when we read it.
CHRISTOPHER KNIGHT HOME Mason Mid-Century Modern Tuft Back Recliner, Muted Yellow (ASIN B073Z7MQM8). The listing gives 27.25 by 34.25 by 38 inches, tapered beech legs and a button-tufted back. Good for: a mid-century look at a similar size. Keep in mind: no reclined depth, seat height or rating was recorded, and the page showed no Add to Cart button when we read it. A nearly identical Mervynn model (B073Z83WY2) has the same dimensions.
BestMassage Recliner Chair with 2 Point Massage Function, PU Brown (ASIN B07YXVF4K2). The listing gives 33 by 26 by 39 inches, a 275 pound rating, a 2-point vibration massage with 8 modes, a hardwood structure and tool-free assembly. Good for: the smallest footprint and a massage feature. Keep in mind: no reclined depth was recorded and the page showed no Add to Cart button when we read it.
Testing the fit before you buy
Before ordering, mark the chair’s upright and reclined footprints on the floor with painter’s tape, using 27 by 34 inches upright and about 27 by 61 inches reclined as a guide, then sit on a dining chair in that spot and picture leaning back. Walk the route from the front door to the room with the chair’s width in mind, and measure each turn: a recliner that is 27 inches wide can still catch on a door frame, a hall corner or a stairwell. If you live in an apartment, ask the building about elevator size and move-in rules. Finally, check where the footrest ends when it is raised, since a coffee table or a TV stand a few inches too close will block it, and leave room for a side table within arm’s reach.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not shop by upright size. Do not forget the back clearance. Do not ignore the doorway. And do not assume a small recliner is light.
Who should skip a small recliner
If your room is under about 10 by 10 feet, a wall-hugger or a chair with a fixed back may fit better. If you need help standing, a lift chair is the right tool. If you want a chair for sleeping, see recliners that turn into beds.
Frequently asked questions
How much room does a small recliner need?
The reclined depth plus walking space. The Lexicon listing gives 61 inches reclined and 16.5 inches of back clearance.
What is a push-back recliner?
A manual recliner that moves when you push your back against it and lift the footrest.
How wide is a small recliner?
The three we read are 26 to 27.25 inches wide.
Will it fit through my door?
Check the doorway width. The Lexicon listing says 20 inches.
How much weight can they hold?
The listings say 300 and 275 pounds, and one gave no rating.
Bottom line
Choose a small recliner for a small space by its reclined depth, back clearance, doorway width and weight rating, not by its upright size. Of the three listings, the Lexicon is the one that gives a reclined depth, back clearance and doorway width, the Mason is the mid-century tufted chair with fewer numbers and the BestMassage is the smallest with a vibration massage. Draw the reclined footprint on the floor first.
