Quick answer
A recliner is a chair whose back tilts and whose footrest lifts. The main types are manual push-back recliners, power recliners, swivel or glider recliners and wall-hugger recliners, and each has a different footprint. To choose, compare the upright depth with the reclined length (the floor the chair needs when fully open), the width of your door and route, the seat size and the weight rating. The fabric and extras come after those numbers.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a manual push-back recliner with stated upright and reclined sizes, a large power recliner with LED lights and tray tables and a swivel glider recliner in faux leather. They show how much the types differ. We have not tested or sat in any of them. All numbers come from the listings.
This guide is an overview. For specific types, see rocker recliner, double recliner, recliner sofa, couch and recliner set, recliner sectional and lift chairs. For covers, see recliner chair slipcovers.
The main types
Push-back (manual) recliners. You lean back with your body weight and the footrest rises. They have no cord and few parts, and the HOMCOM listing we read is this type.
Power recliners. A motor moves the back and footrest with a button, often to any position. They need a wall outlet or a battery pack. The Naomi Home listing is this type.
Swivel and glider recliners. A base that turns or glides, sometimes both. The Coaster Greer listing calls itself a swivel glider recliner.
Wall-hugger recliners. The seat slides forward as it reclines, so the back sits closer to the wall. Sellers describe the feature, but the footrest still extends forward.
Lift recliners. A powered seat that tilts forward to help you stand. That is a different product; see lift chairs.
Upright depth and reclined length
The most useful pair of numbers is the upright depth and the reclined length. The HOMCOM listing gives both: an upright size of 27.25 inches wide, 34.75 inches deep and 39.75 inches high, and a reclining size of 27.25 inches wide, 61.5 inches deep and 29.25 inches high. So when it opens, the chair grows from 34.75 to 61.5 inches deep, which is 61.5 − 34.75 = 26.75 inches longer.
The Naomi Home listing gives a reclined length of 40.16 inches, which is the same as its depth figure of 40.16 inches, so we could not tell whether it counts the footrest. The Coaster Greer listing gives a depth of 38 inches and no reclined length.
If a listing gives no reclined length, ask. A chair that looks compact can take a lot of floor when it opens.
Width and doors
Recliners are wide. The Naomi chair is 36.61 inches wide, the Coaster chair is 41 inches wide and the HOMCOM chair is 27.25 inches wide. Measure the doorway and the path to the room. The Naomi listing gives a minimum required door width of 36.61 inches.
The U.S. Access Board’s accessible-route guidance uses a minimum clear width of 36 inches for a route and 32 inches at short points such as doorways. That rule is for public buildings. Your own door may be narrower or wider, so measure it.
Seat size and support
The HOMCOM seat is 19.25 inches wide and 19.75 inches deep, and sits 17.25 inches high. The Coaster seat is 21.25 inches deep and 20.25 inches high, with an arm height of 25.25 inches. The Naomi seat is 22.83 inches deep.
Seat depth matters for leg support. As our own planning estimate, not a standard, leave about 2 inches between the seat front and the back of your knee when you sit upright. A taller person usually wants a deeper seat.
Weight ratings
The listings give 264 pounds for the HOMCOM, 300 pounds for the Coaster and 900 pounds for the Naomi. The Naomi figure is very high for a single chair and the listing does not say how it is defined, so ask. The ratings are the sellers’ figures and we have not verified them.
Upholstery
The HOMCOM chair is covered in breathable linen fabric on a tubular steel frame. The Naomi chair is faux leather, described as “air leather.” The Coaster chair’s specification says faux leather, but one of its bullets calls it a fabric recliner with beige upholstery and taupe stitching, while its title says taupe. Listings often mix these words.
Faux leather wipes clean but may be warm. Linen breathes but can stain. The covers can be replaced later; see recliner chair slipcovers.
Extras: LED lights, USB and trays
The Naomi listing adds LED ambient lighting, cup holders, USB charging and detachable tray tables. The Coaster chair has pocket coil cushions and memory foam. The HOMCOM chair is plain.
Extras add convenience and parts that can fail. Decide which you would use, and remember that a power recliner needs an outlet near where the chair will sit.
The three listings we read
HOMCOM Push Back Recliner Chair, fabric home theater seating, light grey (model 839-308LG). The listing gives an upright size of 27.25 by 34.75 by 39.75 inches and a reclined size of 27.25 by 61.5 by 29.25 inches, a seat of 19.25 by 19.75 inches at 17.25 inches high, a listed weight of 46.3 pounds, a 264 pound maximum recommendation, breathable linen fabric and a tubular steel frame. Good for: a small room where a manual push-back chair with stated sizes is wanted. Keep in mind: the specification table also shows a product size of 19.75 by 27.17 by 17.25 inches, which matches neither the upright nor the reclined size, so use the sizes in the bullets. The page did not show an Add to Cart button, and its availability line was blank.
Naomi Home Chicago Power Recliner Chair with LED lights, USB and tray tables, black faux leather. The listing gives 40.16 by 36.61 inches, a seat depth of 22.83 inches, a reclined length of 40.16 inches, a listed weight of 127.9 pounds, a minimum door width of 36.61 inches, a 900 pound maximum capacity and power recline with LED lights, USB charging, cup holders and detachable tray tables. Good for: a home theater corner where a large power chair with features is wanted. Keep in mind: it is wide and heavy, the listing shows a height of 13.19 inches in one field and 42.91 inches in a bullet, and the weight capacity is unexplained. From the site owner’s Vietnam delivery address the page said it could not be shipped there, so we could not see an Add to Cart button; that is a geographic limit, not proof of no stock in the United States.
Coaster Greer Living Room Faux Leather Swivel Glider Recliner, taupe (model 651353). The listing gives 41 by 38 by 40 inches (W by D by H), a seat height of 20.25 inches, a seat depth of 21.25 inches, an arm height of 25.25 inches, a listed weight of 103.6 pounds, a 300 pound maximum recommendation, pocket coil cushions over memory foam and a swivel glider motion. Good for: a living room where a gentle glide and swivel are wanted. Keep in mind: the material and color words differ between the title, the specification and the bullets, and the listing gives no reclined length. The page said the same about shipping to Vietnam.
A worked example
These numbers are invented. A living room has 100 inches between the wall behind the recliner and the TV stand.
The HOMCOM, fully reclined, is 61.5 inches deep, leaving 100 − 61.5 = 38.5 inches to the stand. That is above the Access Board’s 36 inch route yardstick, so you could still walk in front of it, which is a public-building reference and only a guide for a home.
The Naomi’s 40.16 inch figure would leave 100 − 40.16 = 59.84 inches. If that figure does not include the footrest, the real gap will be smaller, so ask the seller.
The Coaster at 38 inches deep leaves 100 − 38 = 62 inches before the footrest extends, and the listing does not give the extra length.
Doors. The Naomi’s listed minimum door width is 36.61 inches. A doorway of 32 inches, which the Access Board allows at short points, is 36.61 − 32 = 4.61 inches narrower. The chair might go through sideways or in parts, but you would need to check the listing and your door.
Weight. A 250 pound person is under the HOMCOM’s 264 pounds by 14 pounds, the Coaster’s 300 by 50 pounds and the Naomi’s 900 by 650 pounds.
Red flags in listings
A reclined length equal to the depth, a height that changes between fields, a weight capacity far above what a single chair would carry, and material words that disagree are signs to ask. Also check the assembly: power recliners may arrive in pieces that need plugging together.
Who should skip a recliner
If your room is small, the reclined length may block a route. If anyone needs help standing, a lift chair is better. If you want to sit upright at a desk or table, a recliner is the wrong chair. If you often share the space with others, a sofa with recliners may seat more people.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a push-back and a power recliner?
A push-back recliner opens when you lean back with your body weight. A power recliner opens with a motor and button, and needs an outlet.
How much space does a recliner need?
Its reclined length plus a route in front. One listing we read grows from 34.75 to 61.5 inches deep when it opens.
What does wall hugger mean?
The seat slides forward as it reclines, so the back sits nearer the wall. The footrest still extends forward.
Can a recliner fit through a door?
Check the listing’s door width and measure your door. One listing gives a minimum door width of 36.61 inches.
Are faux leather recliners good?
They wipe clean and are common, but they may feel warm. The listings do not say how the coating wears over years.
Bottom line
Choose a recliner by type, upright depth and reclined length, door width and weight rating. Of the three listings above, the HOMCOM is the manual chair that states both its upright and reclined sizes, the Naomi is the wide power chair with features and unclear numbers and the Coaster is the swivel glider with mixed material words. Measure your room, your route and your door before ordering.
