Quick answer
A recliner chair slipcover fits when the listed size ranges contain your chair’s measurements and when the pieces match the parts of your chair. Measure the overall width, the overall height, the depth and the seat width. Then check how many pieces the set has, whether one covers the footrest, and whether the armrest piece has a hole for a side handle.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a 4-piece stretch jacquard set that lists size ranges for length, width and height, a 4-piece set listed for recliners 24 to 33 inches wide, and a one-piece waterproof cover listed by sitting width. They show how differently sellers describe fit. We have not tested any of them on a chair; every number comes from the listings.
If you are still choosing a chair, see rocking chair and lift chairs. If you are covering a sofa instead, see recliner sofa.
What a slipcover does and does not do
A slipcover is a stretchy or fitted fabric layer that goes over the upholstery. It can hide stains, protect against pet claws, and change the color. It does not repair a broken mechanism or a sagging seat. If the frame or the recliner action is worn, a cover will only hide it.
Also remember that a cover changes how the chair feels. A fabric with grip can stop you sliding; a waterproof layer can feel different from the original upholstery. If you use the chair for naps, try the cover on before deciding to keep it.
Measure your recliner
Measure in inches with the footrest closed and the back upright.
- Overall width: the widest point, usually from the outside of one armrest to the outside of the other.
- Overall height: from the floor to the top of the backrest.
- Depth or length: from the back of the chair to the front edge of the seat with the footrest closed.
- Seat width: the width of the seat cushion between the arms.
Different listings use different words for these numbers. The JIVINER listing gives ranges for length (24 to 37 inches), width (26 to 34 inches) and height (29 to 39 inches). The VANSOFY stretch listing says it fits recliners 24 to 33 inches wide. The VANSOFY waterproof listing states that it fits a sitting width up to 23.6 inches, an armrest width up to 22 inches and a back length up to 48.8 inches. “Width” on one listing may mean the overall width and on another the seat width, so read each definition before you compare.
Count the pieces
Pieces matter because a recliner has more parts than a chair. The JIVINER listing names four pieces: two armrest covers, one footrest cover and one backrest cover. The VANSOFY stretch listing also names four pieces, but its list is a seat cover, a back cover, a normal armrest cover and an armrest cover with a handle hole. That listing does not name a footrest cover.
A manual recliner often has a handle on one side, and the cover needs a slot or a hole so you can reach it. A power recliner has buttons or a control panel that the cover must not block. The VANSOFY stretch listing says it fits a recliner with a handle and also a normal one. The JIVINER listing says it conforms to most recliner shapes, both manual and electric styles. The waterproof VANSOFY listing is a one-piece design that you drape and tuck.
Fabric, stretch and care
Stretch covers use a polyester and spandex blend. The JIVINER listing gives 85 percent polyester and 15 percent spandex; the VANSOFY stretch listing gives 88 percent polyester and 12 percent spandex. A higher spandex share usually means more stretch, but the listing does not state the stretch percentage in inches, so you should still stay within the size range.
Care matters if you choose a cover for a pet or a child. The VANSOFY stretch listing says it can be hand or machine washed at about 85 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) with mild detergent and no bleach. That is the only care instruction in the bullets we read on the three pages. Follow the label on the cover you receive.
Waterproof covers
A waterproof cover suits a chair that sees spills or pet accidents. The VANSOFY waterproof listing describes a 4-layer fabric with a waterproof layer, a non-slip backing, elastic straps to secure the back and three pockets on one side. The trade-off is that a waterproof layer does not stretch as much and may feel stiffer. If the listing does not state the stretch, treat it as a close fit only when your measurements sit well within the range.
Keeping the cover in place
Covers slip. Elastic straps, a non-slip backing and tuck-in edges all help. The VANSOFY waterproof listing names all three. A cover with only stretch relies on friction and may slide on smooth upholstery. Push foam tubes or rolled towels into the seams if the cover creeps.
The three listings we read
JIVINER 4-Piece Recliner Chair Covers, stretch jacquard, dark coffee. The listing gives two armrest covers, one footrest cover and one backrest cover, 85 percent polyester and 15 percent spandex, a size range of length 24 to 37 inches, width 26 to 34 inches and height 29 to 39 inches, a pocket and a listed weight of 2.33 pounds. Good for: a recliner that needs the footrest covered and whose measurements fall inside all three ranges. Keep in mind: “length” is not defined on the page we read, and the range is wide, so the fit may be looser on a small chair. This page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
VANSOFY Stretch Recliner Chair Covers, 4-Pieces Slipcover, Chocolate. The listing gives a seat cover, a back cover, a normal armrest cover and an armrest cover with a handle hole, 88 percent polyester and 12 percent spandex, a fit for recliners 24 to 33 inches wide and a listed weight of 2.48 pounds. Good for: a manual recliner with a side handle. Keep in mind: the set does not name a footrest cover, the maximum width is 33 inches, and the listing warns that different patterns can show slight color differences. The page showed an Add to Cart button.
VANSOFY 100% Waterproof Recliner Chair Covers, dark gray. The listing gives a one-piece cover with a 4-layer fabric, a waterproof layer, a fit for a sitting width up to 23.6 inches, an armrest width up to 22 inches and a back length up to 48.8 inches, non-slip backing, elastic straps, three pockets and a listed weight of 1.85 pounds. Good for: a chair where spills or pet accidents are the main worry. Keep in mind: the listing’s width figure is a seat width and not an overall width, and the one-piece design may fit a recliner with a footrest less snugly than a fitted set. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
A worked example
These numbers are invented. Your recliner measures 34 inches overall width, 38 inches overall height, 36 inches deep with the footrest closed and 22 inches between the arms.
Check the JIVINER ranges. Width 34 inches sits at the upper limit of 26 to 34. Height 38 inches is inside 29 to 39. Depth 36 inches is inside 24 to 37 if “length” means depth. The chair fits every range, but only just on width, so a cover could be tight across the arms.
Check the VANSOFY stretch listing. It is listed for recliners 24 to 33 inches wide. Your chair is 34 inches wide, which is 34 − 33 = 1 inch over the maximum. Even with stretch, that is outside the listed range, so skip it.
Check the waterproof listing. Its maximum sitting width is 23.6 inches and your seat is 22 inches between the arms, which is 23.6 − 22 = 1.6 inches under the limit. That fits, provided the armrest and back length also fall within the stated limits. You would measure the back length the way the listing’s diagram shows, which we did not open.
The result: the JIVINER fits on every number but is tight on width, the VANSOFY stretch set is out of range, and the waterproof cover fits by seat width. Measuring before buying avoids most returns.
Red flags in listings
A cover that lists only “fits most recliners” gives you nothing to check. A range with no definition of what is measured can mean overall width on one page and seat width on another. A set named “4-piece” that does not list the pieces may leave out the footrest. Look for the list of pieces and the size definitions, and ask the seller when they are missing.
Who should skip slipcovers
If the upholstery is torn or the foam is collapsed, a cover will not help, and a new chair may cost less than repeated covers. If your recliner has a wall-hugger or a heavily curved back, a one-size cover may never sit flat. A fitted throw or a washable blanket is simpler if you only need light protection. If you are replacing the chair, see sofa chair and couch and recliner set.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure a recliner for a slipcover?
Measure overall width, overall height, depth with the footrest closed and the seat width between the arms. Compare each number with the size ranges on the listing.
Do recliner slipcovers fit power recliners?
Some listings say they do. One we read says it fits both manual and electric recliners. Check that the cover does not block the controls.
What is the difference between a 4-piece and a one-piece cover?
A 4-piece set covers the armrests, back and seat or footrest separately, and stays in place better. A one-piece cover drapes over the chair and is faster to fit.
Can I machine wash a recliner cover?
One listing says it can be washed by hand or machine at about 85 degrees Fahrenheit with mild detergent and no bleach. Follow the care label of the cover you receive.
Will a slipcover stay in place?
Elastic straps, non-slip backing and tucked edges help. Stretch alone relies on friction and may slide on smooth leather.
Bottom line
Choose recliner chair slipcovers by measuring your chair and checking each number against the listing’s ranges, then by the pieces in the set. Of the three listings above, the JIVINER covers the footrest and lists three size ranges, the VANSOFY stretch set is built for a side handle up to 33 inches wide, and the waterproof cover suits spills but is sized by seat width. If the listing does not define its measurements, ask before you buy.
