Quick answer
A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches per Amerisleep. Two of the three tri-fold queens are listed at 80 by 60 by 6 inches; the GEMBED is 78 by 58 by 6, two inches short in each direction. The weight limits are 300, 150 and an unstated figure. A limit of 150 pounds means one adult, not two, and 300 pounds is less than the 350 pound example of two adults used in our other guides. The tops of the beds are 6 inches from the floor.

What a tri-fold bed is
A tri-fold bed is a foam mattress cut into three panels joined along the folds, with a cover. The listings call them floor sofa beds, futon mattresses or guest beds. They have no frame, so they lie on the floor, and the foam is 6 inches thick in the listings we read, compared with 10 to 12 inches for a standard mattress. They are for occasional use: guests, camping or a dorm lounge.
Worked example: size, weight and capacity
This is our own arithmetic.
- Size. The GEMBED listing gives 78 by 58 inches, which is 2 inches shorter and 2 inches narrower than a standard queen of 80 by 60, so queen sheets will fit loosely. The other two are 80 by 60.
- Capacity. Two adults weighing 350 pounds together exceed the 300 pound limit of the feliz home mattress by 50 pounds and the 150 pound limit of the Lazyzizi by 200 pounds. A single adult of 175 pounds exceeds the 150 limit by 25.
- Weight of the mattress. The Lazyzizi is 13.4 pounds, which one person can carry folded. The GEMBED listing gives an item weight of 16 ounces, which is 1 pound, for a queen foam mattress, which cannot be right; ask the seller.
- Height. A 6 inch mattress on the floor puts the top at 6 inches; a conventional bed frame with a 10 inch mattress is about 24 inches, so a tri-fold is 18 inches lower, and harder to get up from.
What the listings say
feliz home 6 Inch Tri-Folding Mattress Queen Size, Foldable Futon Sofa Bed with Removable Washable Cover (ASIN B0FD3G4D4R). The table gives 80 by 60 by 6 inches and a weight limit of 300 pounds. The bullets give high-density foam 6 inches thick, a removable washable corduroy cover, a non-slip bottom and carry handles, for guests, camping or a dorm. Best for: a guest bed for one or a light couple. Watch out: 300 pounds is the highest of the three and still below two heavy adults.
GEMBED Tri Folding Mattress Queen Size, 6 Inch Foldable Floor Sofa Bed, Memory Foam (ASIN B0GJRPCXGM). The table gives 78 by 58 by 6 inches, an item weight of 16 ounces, memory foam, grey, and a size grid with thicknesses of 4 and 6 inches. The bullets give high-density memory foam, use for guests and camping and easy carrying. The text we read states no weight limit. Best for: nothing until the seller states a limit and a correct weight. Watch out: 2 inches under queen size, a 1 pound weight that cannot be right and no limit.
Lazyzizi Folding Mattress, Memory Foam Tri-fold Mattress with Breathable and Washable Bamboo Fiber Fabric (ASIN B0BYD247MV). The table gives 80 by 60 by 6 inches, a weight of 13.4 pounds and a weight limit of 150 pounds; the title says queen at 79 by 59 inches. The bullets give a convertible design that changes between a lounge chair and a bed, CertiPUR-US certified and OEKO-TEX tested foam and a two-layer design with 1.5 inches of memory foam. Best for: one lighter adult or a child. Watch out: 150 pounds is a single-sleeper limit.
How the three compare
| Listing | Size | Weight | Weight limit | Cover |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| feliz home | 80 × 60 × 6 in | Not in the text we read | 300 lb | Washable corduroy |
| GEMBED | 78 × 58 × 6 in | 16 oz (as listed) | Not stated | Not stated |
| Lazyzizi | 80 × 60 × 6 in (title 79 × 59) | 13.4 lb | 150 lb | Washable bamboo fiber |
How to choose
Decide who sleeps on it. One adult under 150 pounds, one adult, or a light couple.
Check the limit against both sleepers. Add their weights.
Check the size. Two inches short matters little for sleeping, a lot for sheets.
Accept the floor. There is no frame; the bed sits 6 inches from the floor and needs a clean, dry surface.
Where a tri-fold bed fits
The listings describe three uses: a guest bed, a camping mattress and a dorm lounge or floor sofa. In each, the bed is used for a short time and then folded. For a guest room used a few nights a month, a tri-fold stores in a closet or behind a door and costs no floor space the rest of the time. For camping, the weight matters: the Lazyzizi is 13.4 pounds. For a dorm lounge, the fold-up sofa shape matters more than the sleeping comfort.
Care and storage
The feliz home listing describes a removable, washable cover, the Lazyzizi a washable bamboo fiber fabric, and the Lazyzizi names CertiPUR-US certified and OEKO-TEX tested foam; we have not checked those certifications. The listings do not state a folded size, so measure the closet or shelf where you plan to keep it, using the unfolded 80 by 60 inches divided by three, which is about 27 by 60 inches for a three-panel fold if each panel is a third of the length. That is our arithmetic and the actual folded dimensions will differ with the cover and handles.
Floor and bed base
A tri-fold bed lies on the floor, which should be clean and dry, and the feliz home listing describes a non-slip bottom. On a carpet, the foam can trap moisture; on a hard floor, it can slide. A thin foam layer on a hard floor is not the same as a mattress on a frame, and for regular sleeping, the frame guides on this site are the better route.
Mistakes to avoid
Buying for a couple with a 150 pound limit. It is a single-sleeper product.
Trusting a 16 ounce weight. It is an error.
Expecting a standard mattress. The foam is 6 inches thick.
Forgetting storage. The listings do not state the folded size; measure your closet.
Alternatives to a tri-fold
If a tri-fold is too thin for you, other routes exist in our guides. A fold-flat tatami base, as in space saving bed frame, gives a slatted base that sits on the floor and stores flat. A hide-away bed is a different product; a sofa that converts is covered in couch that turns into a bed. A real frame with a regular mattress is the most comfortable and the most space-consuming, which is why guests are often given a tri-fold. The choice depends on how often someone sleeps there.
Sleeping on the floor
A bed 6 inches off the floor is close to the draught and the dust. A clean surface and a rug underneath help, and a layer between the foam and the floor is sensible if the floor is cold or damp. The listings describe non-slip bottoms; none describes a moisture barrier.
When a different bed is better
For a real frame that folds, see space saving bed frame, which covers the fold-flat tatami base. For a bed that hides in a wall, see wall pull down bed. For a queen sofa bed, see couch that turns into a bed.
