Quick answer
A mid century sofa is a look you can check with a tape measure: exposed legs, a low back and a compact footprint. A retailer guide we opened from POVISON says these sofas emphasize clean lines, tufted backrests and minimalist silhouettes, usually set on angled wooden legs, with low profiles. Of the three listings we read on Amazon on 2026-10-01, only one states a leg height, 7 inches, which is 41 percent of its 17 inch seat height. The back heights run from 29.1 to 34.5 inches, and the footprints from 1,950 to 3,222 sq in, which is 8.1 to 13.3 percent of a 12 by 14 ft room.

We have not tested any of these sofas, and every size, weight and material is the seller’s number. All three showed that they could not be shipped to our Hanoi delivery address, which is a geography limit and says nothing about US stock. What makes a sofa mid century
Mid century modern is a design style, and a listing can use the words loosely. The POVISON guide describes three features: clean lines, tufted backrests and angled wooden legs. A fourth, low profile, is in the same guide. Each can be checked in a listing.
- Legs. The sofa should sit on visible legs. Ask for the leg height, because a 2 inch foot is not the same look as a 7 inch leg.
- Back and arm height. A lower back gives the low profile.
- Tufting. Buttons or channels in the back.
- Depth. A compact depth, since the style is human-scaled and not oversized, which is our reading of the guide and not a quote.
The legs are the part most listings leave out. If a listing does not give a leg height, ask.
Worked example: legs and clearance
Only the Ball & Cast loveseat lists a leg length, 7 inches, with a seat height of 17 inches. The leg is 7 / 17 = 0.41, so 41 percent of the seat height is the leg. The cushion and frame make up the other 10 inches. Under that sofa there is space to see the floor and to run a vacuum head, though the listing does not say how much clearance the frame leaves at the sides. Clearance is our reasoning and not a stated figure.
For the other two, no leg height is stated. The Modway Leif’s bullets describe low-profile wood legs with a floating appearance and bun-style legs in the table, and the Modway Valour’s bullets say mid-century modern sofa without a leg size.
Back height and the low profile
A low profile shows in the overall height. Compare the listed heights.
| Listing | Overall height | Against the 34.5 in loveseat |
|---|---|---|
| Modway Leif 89 in velvet | 29.1 in | 5.4 in lower |
| Modway Valour 73 in velvet | 32.5 in | 2 in lower |
| Ball & Cast 65 in loveseat | 34.5 in | baseline |
The arithmetic is 34.5 − 29.1 = 5.4 and 34.5 − 32.5 = 2. The Leif is the lowest, which suits the low profile in the POVISON guide, and it is also the widest at 89 inches. Overall height is not back height by itself, because the height includes the legs, but it is the number listings give.
Footprint
A 12 by 14 ft room is 144 x 168 inches, or 24,192 sq in. This room is an example we chose, not a standard. Use width times depth.
| Listing | Width x depth | Footprint | Share of the room |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modway Leif | 89 x 36.2 in | 3,222 sq in | 13.3% |
| Modway Valour | 73 x 31.5 in | 2,300 sq in | 9.5% |
| Ball & Cast | 65 x 30 in | 1,950 sq in | 8.1% |
The arithmetic is 89 x 36.2 = 3,222, divided by 24,192 gives 0.133; 73 x 31.5 = 2,300, giving 0.095; and 65 x 30 = 1,950, giving 0.081. OROA, a furniture retailer, suggests 30 to 36 inches for main walkways and 14 to 18 inches between a sofa and a coffee table, so the Leif’s 36.2 inch depth plus a 16 inch gap and a 24 inch table is 76.2 inches of floor from the sofa front to the far edge of the table, before a path. The 16 and 24 inch figures are our assumptions.
Seat numbers: read them with care
POVISON’s sofa-comfort guide gives about 17 to 19 inches for most sofas’ seat height and about 21 to 24 inches for seat depth. The listings do this:
| Listing | Seat depth | Seat height |
|---|---|---|
| Ball & Cast | 30 in (equals overall depth) | 17 in |
| Modway Valour | 32 in (more than overall depth 31.5) | 17.5 in |
| Modway Leif | 36.2 in (equals overall depth) | 29.1 in (equals overall height) |
Only the two seat heights of 17 and 17.5 inches are plausible, and both sit inside the 17 to 19 inch range. The seat depth fields are not real seat depths, because each equals or exceeds the sofa’s own depth. The Ball & Cast bullets say its seat cushion is 21 inches deep, which is the usable number and sits at the bottom of the 21 to 24 inch range. The Leif’s bullets describe a deep bench seat with a single cushion, and give no seat depth, so ask.
Load, weight and assembly
The Valour lists a weight capacity of 881 pounds and weighs 93 lb. The Ball & Cast supports 500 lb and weighs 78 lb. The Leif weighs 132 lb and gave no capacity in the rows we read. The Ball & Cast comes in one package, recommended to be assembled by two people in about 10 minutes, with a detailed manual. The others did not state assembly in the rows we read.
Furniture Academy says the entryway has to be wider than at least one of a piece’s depth, height or diagonal depth. The Leif’s table height of 29.1 inches clears a 32 inch door by 2.9 inches, and the Valour’s 31.5 inch depth clears by 0.5. The U.S. Access Board uses 32 inches as a minimum clear width at doorways. Legs that detach reduce the height.
Fabric and tufting
The Leif and the Valour are velvet, the Leif a performance velvet that its bullets call stain-resistant and the Valour a performance velvet polyester with a stain-resistant fabric. The Ball & Cast is a woven polyester with button tufting, and its bullets call it breathable. These are seller claims we have not tested. Tufting adds a place for crumbs and pet hair to collect, which is a general observation and not a listing claim.
Three listings read on 2026-10-01
Ball & Cast 65″ Loveseat Sofa, Mid Century Modern, Button Tufted Upholstered, Solid Wood Legs, Light Brown (B0H38ND2SV). The table gives 30 x 65 x 34.5 in (D x W x H), 78 lb, a seat height of 17 in, a leg length of 7 in and a listed weight limit of 500 pounds, with two seat cushions. The bullets describe a 21 inch deep seat, solid wood legs and a one-package delivery. Good if you want a stated leg height in a small sofa. Keep in mind: its seat depth field equals the overall depth, and the 65 inch width seats two.
Modway Valour Performance Velvet Sofa, Green (B07X27S5K1). The table gives 31.5 x 73 x 32.5 in, 93 lb, a seat height of 17.5 in, two seat cushions and a listed weight capacity of 881 pounds. The bullets say mid-century modern sofa with performance velvet polyester and stain-resistant fabric. Good for a green velvet mid-century look. Keep in mind: its seat depth field of 32 inches is more than its overall depth.
Modway Leif Performance Velvet Upholstered Sofa, 89 Inch Modern Tuxedo Sofa, Chocolate Brown (B0DZJV18H7). The table gives 36.2 x 89 x 29.1 in, 132 lb, a single seat cushion and seating for three. The bullets describe a tuxedo silhouette, a deep bench seat, sinuous spring support and low-profile wood legs. Good for the lowest and widest of the three. Keep in mind: its seat depth and seat height fields equal its overall depth and height.
How to choose
- Ask for the leg height, and decide how much floor you want to see under the sofa.
- Compare the overall height for the low profile you want.
- Compute the footprint share and add the coffee table and the path.
- Read the seat numbers critically, and ask for the seat depth.
- Check the weight capacity and the delivery path.
You may not need a new sofa to get the look. New tapered legs on an existing frame lift a low sofa; see sofa legs for replacement legs, and sofa risers for a simple lift.
Mistakes to avoid
- Trusting the words mid century without a leg height.
- Reading a seat depth that equals the overall depth.
- Choosing by the footprint without the table and the path.
- Ignoring the door clearance of a deep sofa.
- Forgetting that tufting collects crumbs.
Bottom line
Check the legs, the height and the footprint. Of the three, the Ball & Cast is the compact loveseat with a 7 inch leg, the Valour is the 73 inch green velvet sofa and the Leif is the 89 inch low tuxedo sofa at 29.1 inches tall. Ask the seller for the seat depth and the leg height before you order.
Frequently asked questions
What is a mid century sofa?
POVISON’s guide describes clean lines, tufted backrests and minimalist silhouettes, usually on angled wooden legs, with low profiles.
How tall are the legs on a mid century sofa?
The only stated leg height here is 7 inches on the Ball & Cast loveseat. Ask the seller when a listing does not say.
How big is a mid century sofa?
The three here are 65, 73 and 89 inches wide, which take 8.1 to 13.3 percent of a 12 by 14 ft room.
Are mid century sofas comfortable?
Seat height of 17 to 19 inches suits most adults per POVISON’s seat guide, and depth varies. A sit test is the best check.
Will a mid century sofa fit through a door?
Compare the depth, height or diagonal depth with the narrowest opening. A 32 inch clear width is a sensible worst case.
