Quick answer
A low bookshelf under a window must be shorter than the sill by at least a few inches, so measure from the floor to the underside of the sill first and subtract the bookcase height. The three bookcases we read on Amazon on 2026-10-01 are 30.9, 31.5 and 35.24 inches tall, so each needs a sill higher than that, plus room for the baseboard, a heater or a curtain. We have not tested any of them; every figure comes from the listings, and where a listing contradicts itself we say so. Anchor any bookcase that can tip. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Anchor It! campaign says anchoring furniture with drawers, doors and shelves to the wall prevents tip-over injuries and deaths.

Contradictions to know about. The Furinno listing’s table shows several variants with capacities from 40 to 90 pounds; the first column, which matches 9.3 x 31.3 x 31.5 inches, says 75 pounds, so check that you are looking at the right variant. The IOTXY listing shows two weights for what appear to be two sizes, and the extended width is not stated in the rows we read, so it is not clear how wide the “L” is when pulled out. It lists an anti-tipping device, which is a useful feature we could not verify.
Step one: measure the sill, not the wall
Measure from the floor to the underside of the sill, not to the glass. Then subtract:
- The bookcase height.
- A gap of at least 2 inches at the top, our own planning margin, so the shelf does not scrape the sill and so you can lift it out.
- The thickness of any baseboard if it stops the bookcase sitting flush; measure the baseboard’s projection from the wall and compare it to the bookcase’s depth margin.
Worked example with an assumed sill: the underside of the sill is 36 inches above the floor.
- Hombazzar 30.9 inches: 36 − 30.9 = 5.1 inches of clearance.
- Furinno 31.5 inches: 36 − 31.5 = 4.5 inches.
- IOTXY 35.24 inches: 36 − 35.24 = 0.76 inch, which is under our 2 inch margin, so it does not fit this window.
If the sill were at 30 inches, none of the three would fit. Measure first.
Step two: depth and the room around it
Depth matters under a window because you may have a radiator, curtains or a deep sill ledge. The depths are 12.6, 9.29 and 11.61 inches. With a 4 inch deep sill ledge (assumed) that overhangs the wall, a 12.6 inch bookcase juts out 12.6 inches from the wall below it. Leave a walking space: the National Kitchen & Bath Association suggests at least 36 inches for a walkway, a figure written for kitchens that is a handy yardstick for any room. In a room where the wall is 100 inches from the opposite wall, 100 − 12.6 = 87.4 inches remains, which is plenty.
A radiator or heater under the window changes the picture. The listings do not say how close a wood bookcase can sit to a heat source, so keep a gap and check the heater manual.
Step three: width
Windows are often narrower than the wall below them. Measure the window and decide whether the bookcase should fill the width or be centered. Widths are 35.4, 31.34 and 31.5 inches (IOTXY can extend). Example: a 48 inch wide window with a 31.5 inch bookcase centered leaves (48 − 31.5) ÷ 2 = 8.25 inches on each side, which looks tidy under a curtain; the 35.4 inch bookcase leaves (48 − 35.4) ÷ 2 = 6.3 inches. For a corner window, the IOTXY listing says its two overlapping sections slide to adjust the width and can be arranged in a line, at an angle or around a corner.
Load: what these shelves hold
A hardcover book weighs about 2 pounds in our rough estimate; a shelf of 12 books is 24 pounds. A low bookcase carries its weight low, so it is less likely to tip, but children climb it. Hombazzar’s stated 50 pounds across three tiers is about 16.7 pounds per tier if the load is spread (50 ÷ 3), which is eight hardcover books. Furinno’s 75 pounds over three tiers is 25 pounds per tier. The IOTXY states no capacity in the rows we read; ask the seller or use light loads. Do not use the top of any of these as a seat.
Tip-over and anchoring
A low bookcase is not exempt. The IOTXY listing mentions an anti-tipping device; the other two do not in the text we read. The Anchor It! site lists a drill, a screwdriver and a stud finder as tools for installing an anchoring kit, and shows the steps: attach a bracket to the wall, move the furniture close, attach the other bracket to the furniture, connect and tighten the strap. If you rent and cannot drill, ask your landlord; the site also gives tips for filling holes when you move.
Which to choose
- Hombazzar 30.9 inches: the lowest of the three, so it clears most sills, with the highest stated shelf spacing at 12.7 inches and an X-shaped side frame. The stated load is the lowest, at 50 lb.
- Furinno PASIR 31.5 inches: the shallowest at 9.29 inches, good where space is tight, and a stated 75 lb on the matching variant. The shelves are about 9.7 inches apart, so it suits paperbacks and bins more than tall art books.
- IOTXY 35.24 inches: the tallest, so it suits only a high sill, but it is adjustable in width and can wrap a corner. Check its extended width.
Light, heat and books
Direct sun fades book spines over time, and a bookcase directly under a south-facing window gets the most. Our simple precaution, not a standard: put spines facing out only if you accept some fading, or store the books you care about elsewhere. Keep curtains clear of the shelf top so cords do not hang over it, and keep plants on the shelf away from the glass in winter, since cold glass can chill them.
Checklist before you order
- Measure the floor-to-sill height at both ends of the window, since floors and sills are sometimes not level; use the smaller number.
- Subtract the bookcase height and a 2 inch margin.
- Measure any baseboard, outlet or heater under the window and check the bookcase depth against it.
- Check the stated load against the books you own, using about 2 pounds per hardcover as a rough figure and weighing a sample.
- Plan an anchor point on a stud or use a wall anchor rated for the load.
- Check that the window can still open and that curtain cords do not reach the top shelf.
All three bookcases need assembly. The listings give little detail about the tools; plan for a screwdriver, and assemble on a rug so the finish is not scratched.
Small-space tips
Put the bookcase under the window rather than against the only free wall, so the free wall stays open for a door or a desk. Use the top for a lamp or plants, not for a heavy item. If you need more storage, our small bookcases with doors guide and cube storage organizers for small rooms cover enclosed options, and how to maximize space on a small desk shows how to keep the rest of the room clear.
Frequently asked questions
How low should a bookshelf be to fit under a window?
Lower than the underside of the sill by at least 2 inches. A 30.9 inch bookcase needs a sill above 32.9 inches by our margin.
Can I put a bookshelf under a window?
Yes, if it clears the sill, does not block a heater and is anchored if it can tip.
How deep should it be?
Anything from about 9 to 13 inches is common; the three here are 9.29, 11.61 and 12.6 inches. Leave at least 36 inches of walkway.
Does sunlight damage books?
Strong direct sun can fade covers over time. Put less valued books on the sunny side or draw a curtain.
Do low bookcases need anchoring?
Anchoring is advised for furniture with shelves; see the Anchor It! campaign.
