Hosting in a small space comes down to three numbers: how many people need a seat, how much floor a guest bed takes when it is open, and how wide the path stays. Count seats first, using the floor each seat takes. Then check the open size of any guest bed: a full futon mattress is listed at 54 x 75 in, and a pulled-out twin trundle needs about 75 x 76 in plus 24 in of access around it. Last, keep a clear path: the US Access Board uses 36 in as the minimum clear width of an accessible route, which is a public-building rule and only a yardstick for a home.

Step 1: Count seats by the floor they take

Chairs are not the only seats. A pouf, an ottoman, a storage bench or a folding stool all seat one person and can be put away afterward. Each takes floor space, so write down the footprint before you plan.

For a round pouf, multiply the two sides in inches, then divide by 144 for square feet. A pouf that is 20 in by 20 in takes 20 x 20 = 400 sq in, which is 400 / 144 = 2.78 sq ft. Four such poufs take 4 x 400 = 1,600 sq in, or 11.1 sq ft.

Check the stated weight recommendation, not just the size. It is a limit for the person or load on the seat, and many listings do not state it. If it is missing, treat it as unknown.

Step 2: Plan a table you can put away

A folding table gives guests a surface and then disappears. Read three numbers on the listing: the open size, the folded size and the height. A 24 in wide table with 16 in of depth takes 24 x 16 = 384 sq in, or 2.67 sq ft, when open. Check that the legs lock and that the stated weight recommendation matches what you will put on it.

For a wall-mounted folding table, the useful number is the projection from the wall when open, because that is what narrows the room.

Step 3: Check the guest bed when it is open

A guest bed has two sizes: closed and open. Plan the room for the open size, because that is the size you live with for the night.

• Futon mattress. Common US futon mattress sizes are twin 39 x 75 in, full 54 x 75 in and queen 60 x 80 in. Thickness runs 5 to 12 in, and 5 to 6 in folds most easily.

3. Width left beside it if the bed runs along the 120 in wall direction: 120 – 54 = 66 in.
4. Compare 66 in with the 36 in walkway yardstick: 66 – 36 = 30 in of margin.
5. Four 20 in poufs on the floor: 4 x 400 = 1,600 sq in, or 11.1 sq ft, which is 1,600 / 17,280 = 9.3% of the floor.

The numbers show that a full futon and four poufs together use 28.1 + 11.1 = 39.2 sq ft of a 120 sq ft room before you add a table. Decide what stays out when the guests arrive.

Step 5: Put it away afterward

Plan where each piece goes when the guests leave. A pouf that stacks or slides under a console takes no floor. A futon folds to a sofa. A folding table needs a spot behind a door or under a bed. If a piece has nowhere to go, it is a bigger purchase than its footprint suggests.

A ten-minute check before guests arrive

Do this a week ahead, while you can still return or swap something.
