A heavy duty plant dolly lets you slide a large pot across the floor instead of lifting it. The three dollies compared here are a tilt-and-roll plant cart listed at 14.84 by 14.05 by 42.91 inches with a 176 pound rating, a 22 inch round metal caddy listed at 22 by 22 by 3 inches with a 600 pound rating, and an adjustable caddy listed at 22.8 by 22.8 by 2.6 inches with a 500 pound rating and eight lockable casters. A flat caddy stays under the pot and is the right pick for a pot you move often. A cart lifts the pot and is the right pick when you move one pot between rooms. Capacity numbers on a listing are the seller’s claim, so leave a wide margin and check the pot’s loaded weight.

What a plant dolly does
A large plant in a ceramic pot with wet soil is heavy, and the usual way to move it is to drag it. That scratches floors and strains backs. A plant dolly puts wheels under the pot or lifts it onto wheels.
A dolly makes a plant easy to turn toward the light, easy to pull out for cleaning and easy to roll to a sink for watering. It does not make a pot safe to stack, and it does not replace a drip tray. A flat caddy sits under the pot, so water that drains from the pot lands on the dolly and then on the floor unless there is a saucer inside.
The three dollies we compare
OICIPT plant caddy cart, tilt-and-roll
This one is a different kind of mover. It is listed at 14.84 by 14.05 by 42.91 inches, weighing 14.83 pounds, and made of carbon steel. The bullets describe a T-shaped handle with a rubber grip, adjustable metal grip arms that slide to hold pots from 4 to 30 inches in height, an extended adjustment strap and two hooks. You place the pot, secure the arms and tilt the cart backward to roll. The listing says the cart supports up to 176 pounds, which the listing converts as about 80 kilograms, and says it can be assembled in about 15 minutes and folded for storage. The listing does not say which side the 42.91 inches is, so check the page before planning a storage spot; it is probably the cart with its handle, not the floor footprint. It is the lowest rated of the three, and the only one that does not leave wheels under the pot.
22 inch round metal plant caddy
This caddy is listed at 22 by 22 inches and 3 inches high, weighing 6.6 pounds, in rust-proof coated metal. The bullets give a 600 pound capacity, two swivel casters and two lockable casters, and say it assembles in 15 minutes. The listing says the 22 inch round platform fits pots up to 24 inches in diameter, which is bigger than the platform itself. It does not explain how, so we do not rely on that figure; match the base of your pot to the 22 inch platform, not to the pot’s rim. It is the highest rated of the three.
TreeGun adjustable plant caddy with eight casters
The TreeGun caddy is listed at 22.8 by 22.8 inches and 2.6 inches high, weighing 4.99 pounds. The bullets say it is built from four ABS panels, four stainless steel pipes and eight lockable casters, supports up to 500 pounds, and that the outer diameter adjusts from 15.7 to 22.8 inches and the inner diameter from 7 to 13.8 inches. The title gives the range as 8 to 22 inches, which does not match the bullets, so use the bullet measurements and check the page. The bullets also say assembly takes 32 screws per stand and four rods, with a time of 20 minutes to 2 hours, so plan an afternoon. It is the one that fits the most pot sizes.
Flat caddy or cart?
The two shapes solve different problems.
A flat caddy
A flat caddy stays under the pot all the time. You push the pot, wheels and all. It lets you slide the plant in and out without lifting. It is low, only 2.6 to 3 inches high, which adds almost nothing to the pot height. It works well for a plant that you rotate or move once a week.
A tilt-and-roll cart
A cart lifts the pot off the floor when you tilt it back, rolls it to a new place and sets it down. You can move one cart between several pots. It is better when a plant lives on a bare floor without wheels and moves only for a cleaning day. The cart also has a footprint of its own while it stands, and a folded cart needs a storage spot.
How to match a dolly to your pot
Three measurements matter.
- Pot base diameter. Measure the bottom of the pot, not the rim. A base wider than the platform will hang off the edge and tip.
- Floor type. Hard casters can mark soft wood. Lockable casters hold the pot in place on a hard floor and are a safety feature if children or pets are around.
Weight: leave a margin
The ratings on these listings run from 176 to 600 pounds, and they are claims by the seller. We have no way to verify them. Treat the rating as a ceiling, not a target. That does not include the pot itself and the plant. If the pot, soil and plant come to 130 pounds, the 176 pound cart has 176 lb minus 130 lb equals 46 lb of margin, while the 500 pound caddy has 500 lb minus 130 lb equals 370 lb. The more margin, the less stress on the casters and the less chance of a collapse.
Worked example: a living room with a window wall
The window wall is 84 inches long. The room is 70 inches deep from that wall to the front of the sofa. Two large pots stand along the wall, each on a TreeGun caddy at its widest, 22.8 inches. We check each direction separately.
Depth direction (from the window wall toward the sofa):
- 70 in minus 22.8 in equals 47.2 in of room left in front of the pots.
We use 36 inches as a planning yardstick for a path walked every day (the US Access Board gives 36 inches as a minimum accessible-route width for public buildings). 47.2 in minus 36 in equals 11.2 in to spare.
Length direction (along the window wall):
- 22.8 in plus 22.8 in equals 45.6 in of dolly width.
- 84 in minus 45.6 in equals 38.4 in of wall left in total.
- If you divide that total into three equal gaps (both ends and between the pots), 38.4 in divided by 3 equals 12.8 in per gap.
The 12.8 inch gaps are enough to rotate a pot a little and get a hand around a leaf.
Locking and floors
Casters that lock matter as much as the weight rating. A pot on an unlocked dolly can roll on a slight slope, and a tall plant is top heavy. The 22 inch round caddy lists two lockable casters out of four, and the TreeGun lists all eight as lockable. For a hard floor, lock them when the plant is in place. For a rug, check that the casters do not sink.
Indoor and outdoor
The listings describe indoor and outdoor use, with rust-proof coatings on the metal caddy and ABS panels with stainless steel pipes on the TreeGun. A caddy stays wet if rain runs under the pot, so empty any standing water. Keep an outdoor dolly off wet grass, since small casters tend to sink into soft ground.
Who should buy a heavy duty plant dolly
- Owners of large floor plants who rotate them for light.
- Anyone with a bad back who drags pots now.
- Renters who want to protect floors and need to move a pot for cleaning.
Who should skip it
- Owners of small pots. A pot you can lift with one hand does not need a dolly.
- Gardeners with uneven ground. Small casters do not roll on gravel or deep grass.
- People who need a pot that stays still. A dolly invites movement.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring the rim instead of the base. The base is what sits on the platform.
- Buying to the rating. Leave a wide margin.
- Leaving the casters unlocked on a slope.
- Ignoring conflicting figures, such as the 24 inch pot claim on the 22 inch caddy or the TreeGun title versus bullets.
Checklist before you buy
- Measure the pot’s base diameter and height.
- Estimate the loaded weight and compare it with the rating, with a wide margin.
- Choose between a flat caddy and a cart.
- Check how many casters lock.
- Read the listing for assembly time and any notes that disagree.

Frequently asked questions
How much weight can a heavy duty plant dolly hold?
The ratings here are 176, 500 and 600 pounds, all claimed by the seller. Estimate the loaded weight of your pot and leave a wide margin.
What size plant dolly do I need?
Measure the base of the pot, not the rim. The round caddy is 22 inches across and the adjustable caddy opens to 22.8 inches outside, so both need a base smaller than that.
Are flat caddies or carts better?
A flat caddy stays under the pot and is better for a plant you move often. A cart lifts and moves a pot between places and is better for occasional moves.
Do plant dollies scratch floors?
They can, depending on the caster material. Check the listing, lock the casters when parked and use a mat on soft floors.
Can I use a plant dolly outdoors?
The listings describe outdoor use. Keep it to hard surfaces and empty standing water.
