To choose a slipcover size, first match the cut to your sofa’s seat cushions, then compare your measured sofa width with the size range on the listing. Joccun Stretch Couch Cover Slipcovers lists 31 x 94 x 31 in (D x W x H) and fits 3-seat sofas 78 to 94 in, H.VERSAILTEX 4 Piece Stretch Couch Covers for 3 Cushion Couch Sofa lists 39 x 88 x 40 in, and 4 Piece T Cushion Sofa Slipcovers lists 39 x 90 x 35 in. A “3 cushion” sofa has three separate seat cushions, and covers sold for it expect that layout. A cover refreshes furniture you already own, so it does not fix a sagging frame.

Why slipcovers suit small homes

In a small apartment, replacing a sofa is expensive in time as well as money. You have to measure the doorway, wait for delivery and find somewhere to take the old one. A slipcover keeps the sofa you have, changes how it looks, and gives you something that is easy to remove and wash.

A stretch cover also adds very little bulk. The fabric hugs the frame, so the sofa’s footprint does not change in any way that matters for walkways. That is different from adding a throw blanket and extra pillows, which pile up on the seat.

Know your furniture before you measure

Slipcovers come in different cuts, and the cut has to match the furniture.

Number of seat cushions

A “3 cushion” sofa has three separate seat cushions, and covers sold for it expect that layout. A bench-seat sofa has one long cushion and needs a different cover. If you buy for the wrong count, the cover bunches or leaves a gap. Several listings in our table say “for 3 cushion couch” in the title.

Box cushions and T cushions

A box cushion is a simple rectangle. A T cushion has a raised wing on each side that wraps around the arm. The Jcones listing is a T cushion set, and its title says it comes with three individual T cushion covers. Check its page for the cushion length, width and height ranges it covers. If your cushions look like a “T” from above, you need a T-cushion cover, and a cover for plain box cushions will not fit.

Sofa, loveseat, armchair

Most stretch covers are sold by seat count. A loveseat is two seats, a sofa is three. The size range on the listing matters more than the name.

Measuring step by step

Use a soft tape measure and write the numbers down. Measure each item twice.

  1. Arm-to-arm width. Measure the seat across the front from the inside of one arm to the inside of the other. This is the number most listings use for sizing.
  2. Overall width. Measure the sofa at its widest point, including the arms. A cover size chart sometimes uses this number instead, so read the listing carefully.
  3. Back height. Measure from the floor to the top of the back.
  4. Seat depth. Measure from the front of the seat to the back cushion.
  5. Cushion count and shape. Count the seat cushions and note whether they are plain or T-shaped.

Compare your numbers with the listing and with the product’s dimensions. The H.VERSAILTEX listing gives 39 in deep by 88 in wide by 40 in high. Do not assume that is the size of the furniture it fits. Treat it as a hint and read the listing’s fit chart, not just the box size.

What the three covers in our table say

These numbers come from the listings in our table.

  • H.VERSAILTEX 4-piece stretch couch cover, natural. Described as a stretch cover for a 3-cushion couch, in 85 percent polyester and 15 percent spandex. The listing dimensions are 39 in deep by 88 in wide by 40 in high.
  • Joccun stretch couch cover, 1 piece. Listed at 31 in by 94 in by 31 in. The listing says it fits three-seat sofas 78 to 94 in wide, and the title calls it a washable spandex jacquard cover.
  • Jcones 4-piece T cushion sofa slipcover, green. Listed at 39 in by 90 in by 35 in, 2.1 kg. The title says it includes three individual T cushion covers.

The H.VERSAILTEX and Jcones listings are both four-piece sets with separate cushion covers, so you slip the sofa body and each cushion separately. The Joccun cover is a single piece, so it covers the body in one go.

Worked example: choosing a size for an 84 in sofa

Say your sofa measures 84 in from the inside of one arm to the inside of the other, and it has three seat cushions.

Match the size range. The Joccun listing’s three-seat range is 78 to 94 in.

  • Room below your number: 84 in minus 78 in equals 6 in.
  • Room above your number: 94 in minus 84 in equals 10 in.

Your sofa sits inside the range with 6 in to spare at the low end and 10 in at the high end, so a three-seat cover is the right size class. If your sofa were 70 in, it would sit 78 in minus 70 in equals 8 in below that minimum, so a three-seat cover would hang loose and you should look for a loveseat size instead.

Check the range width. A wide range means a lot of stretch is needed. For the three-seat class, 94 in minus 78 in equals 16 in of spread between the smallest and largest sofa it claims to fit. A sofa near the middle (86 in) gets a smoother fit than one at either end.

Check the cushions. With three equal seat cushions, each is about 84 in divided by 3, which equals 28 in wide. Compare that with the cushion size range on the Jcones listing, but remember that real cushions are rarely identical, and a T cushion has wings that make it wider at the top. Measure the widest point of each cushion before you order a T-cushion cover.

If any of these checks fall outside the range, size up or down, or look for a cover that is sold specifically for your furniture type.

Fabric, stretch and care

The fabric decides how the cover feels and how long it lasts.

Polyester and spandex blends

Stretch covers are usually a polyester and spandex blend, because spandex gives the stretch that lets one size fit a range of sofas. The H.VERSAILTEX listing gives 85 percent polyester with 15 percent spandex. A higher spandex share generally means more stretch, but more stretch can also mean a thinner feel, so read the listing for each cover.

Jacquard and plush

Jacquard is a woven pattern that is thicker than plain knit and hides small marks. Plush fabric feels soft but can collect pet hair. Check which fabric each listing uses, and choose what fits your household.

Water-repellent claims

Some covers claim to resist spills. Treat that as a helpful extra, not a guarantee, and check each listing’s care instructions to see whether the cover can go in a washing machine. The Joccun and Jcones titles both say washable.

Keeping the cover in place

A slipcover that slides around every time you sit will annoy you quickly. Some covers add helper features, such as foam rods you push into the seat gaps, elastic straps under the cushions or non-slip edges. These help, but the best fix is a close fit, which brings us back to measuring.

Who should buy furniture slipcovers

  • Renters who cannot replace furniture but want a new look.
  • Pet and child households that want a washable layer over the sofa.
  • People with a sofa in good shape whose fabric is worn or stained.

Who should skip them

  • Anyone with a damaged frame or sagging springs. A cover will not repair structure.
  • People with unusual shapes. Sectionals, recliners and curved sofas need covers made for that shape. Do not stretch a straight-sofa cover over them.
  • Outdoor furniture owners looking at indoor covers. Outdoor cushions need covers made for outdoor use. Check the listing for UV and weather claims.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sizing by name. “Loveseat” and “sofa” mean different widths in different houses. Measure instead.
  • Ignoring cushion shape. A T-cushion sofa needs a T-cushion cover.
  • Sitting at the edge of the range. If your sofa is at the very top or bottom of the size range, the cover will either strain or hang loose.
  • Skipping the tuck. Many covers need extra fabric tucked into the gaps between the seat and the arms. Follow the listing’s installation steps.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know what size slipcover to buy?

Measure the arm-to-arm width of your seat and compare it with the size ranges on the listing. The Joccun listing, for example, gives 78 to 94 in for a three-seat sofa.

Will one slipcover fit a sectional or a recliner?

Usually not. Sectionals and recliners need covers made for those shapes, so look for a listing that names your furniture type.

Do slipcovers make a sofa bigger?

A stretch cover hugs the frame, so the change in size is small. Check the listing, and measure again if your sofa sits in a tight spot.

Can I wash a slipcover?

Many are machine washable, but not all. Check the care instructions on the listing and wash with the settings it gives.

What is the difference between a T cushion and a box cushion?

A box cushion is a plain rectangle. A T cushion has wings on each side that wrap around the arm of the sofa, so it needs a cover cut for that shape.
