Chair Slipcovers on Amazon: Measure and Choose Right

Quick answer

Chair slipcovers for dining chairs come in two main types: a full cover that goes over the back and seat, and a seat cover that protects only the cushion. Both are sized by ranges, so the job is to measure your chair, compare each measurement with the listing’s range and buy only when every number fits. The four numbers are back height, back width, seat size and seat thickness.

We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a velvet stretch cover for Parsons chairs, a waterproof stretch cover with a polyester and spandex blend and a waterproof seat-only cover. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tried any of them on a chair. All numbers come from the listings.

Full covers and seat covers

A full cover, sometimes called a Parsons chair cover, slips over the whole back and the seat. It changes the look and hides worn upholstery. A seat cover protects the cushion only and leaves the back as it is. A seat cover is easier to fit and cheaper, but it does nothing for a stained back.

Choose by what you need. For pets and children, a waterproof seat cover may be enough because most spills land on the seat. To change the color of the room, a full cover is the way.

The four measurements

Measure your chair in inches.

1. Back height: from the seat up to the top of the back, or from the floor, depending on the listing. The listing says which.
2. Back width: across the widest part of the back.
3. Seat width and depth: the seat cushion across and front to back.
4. Seat thickness: the height of the cushion.

Listings differ in what they measure from, so read each definition before comparing numbers.

How the listings describe fit

The H.VERSAILTEX listing says its covers are one-size-fits-most for normal and high back dining chairs, and the text we read gives a chair back height of 19 to 26 inches and a chair back width of 16 to 19 inches. The Genina listing gives a back height of 19.5 to 23.5 inches, a back width of 16 to 19 inches, a seat width and length of 16 to 19 inches and a thickness of 3.5 to 5.5 inches. The Easy-Going listing is for seat covers only and gives a seat cushion length and width of 16 to 18 inches and a thickness of 2 to 4 inches.

The ranges overlap, but not completely. A chair that fits one cover may fall outside another.

Fabric and stretch

Stretch covers use polyester and spandex. The Genina cover is 85 percent polyester and 15 percent spandex, and the Easy-Going seat cover is 80 percent polyester and 20 percent spandex. The H.VERSAILTEX cover is a velvet described as two-way stretch. More spandex usually means more give, but the ranges above are the real limits.

Velvet looks richer and is warmer to the touch. A polyester and spandex blend with a waterproof layer is more practical for a family.

Waterproof claims

The Genina listing describes a waterproof coating with a PE film inner layer. The Easy-Going listing describes a TPU membrane backing. These layers stop liquid from reaching the cushion, but they can make a cover less breathable and a little noisy. The listings do not give a waterproof test method, so treat the claim as the seller’s.

Care

Care differs, and it affects how long covers last. The H.VERSAILTEX listing says to machine wash separately in cold water on the gentle cycle, not to use bleach, to tumble dry on low and not to iron. The Genina listing says to hand wash or machine wash in cold water. The Easy-Going listing says to machine wash cold with no bleach or iron and suggests hanging to dry.

Follow the label on the cover you receive. A cover that shrinks or loses stretch will not fit.

Fitting tips

A cover that is at the top of its range fits tightly and may strain at the seams. A cover at the bottom of its range fits loosely. Aim for the middle. If your chairs are old and the padding is thin, a snug cover can bunch. If your chairs have an unusual shape, such as a rounded back or exposed wood, a cover labeled for Parsons chairs will not sit properly.

A worked example

These numbers are invented. Your Parsons chair measures 24 inches in back height, 17 inches in back width, 17 by 17 inches in seat size and 3 inches in seat thickness.

H.VERSAILTEX: the back height of 24 inches is inside 19 to 26, and the back width of 17 inches is inside 16 to 19. It fits on the two ranges quoted. The seat ranges are not given in the text we read, so check the page before buying.

Genina: the back height of 24 inches is 24 − 23.5 = 0.5 inch above the top of the 19.5 to 23.5 range. The seat thickness of 3 inches is 3.5 − 3 = 0.5 inch below the 3.5 minimum. It fails on two counts.

Easy-Going: the seat of 17 inches is inside 16 to 18 and the thickness of 3 inches is inside 2 to 4. It fits, as a seat cover only.

Now a second chair with a 28 inch tall back. No listing covers it: the H.VERSAILTEX tops out at 26, which is 28 − 26 = 2 inches short. For that chair you would need a different cover or a different chair.

The lesson is that two covers that look identical can differ by half an inch in a way that matters.

Red flags in listings

A cover that says “fits most chairs” without ranges, a size line that is the package, a listing that says “set of 4” while the item count says 6 and covers sold for a different chair type, such as armchairs or wingbacks, are signs to be careful. Also check whether the set includes four full covers or four seat covers, because the pictures can show both.

Who should skip slipcovers

If the chairs are in poor condition, a cover hides problems without fixing them. If the chairs are very cheap, replacement may cost about as much as covers; see dining chairs. If you only fear spills, a seat cover is enough.
