Quick answer

The three products are a 55 inch long dresser with 14 fabric drawers and an open shelf, a 46.6 inch tall bookshelf with three fabric drawers and a 55.7 inch tall bookshelf with three fabric drawers and ten shelves. The long dresser lists a TV stand use up to 55 inch TVs. Tall furniture should be anchored to the wall: the US Anchor It campaign says dressers, armoires and other clothing storage furniture sold since September 1, 2023 must meet stability standards and include anchor kits, and none of the three listings mentions an anchor kit in the text we read, so ask.

Dresser, bookshelf or both

A dresser holds clothes in drawers at a height you can reach. A bookshelf holds books and decor on open shelves. A hybrid gives a few drawers and a few shelves, but the drawers are often fabric bins, which hold less weight than wood drawers and may not count as a clothing storage unit in the same way; the rule that applies to your purchase is a question for the seller.

For a conventional dresser, see our dresser and 6 drawer dresser guides.

Worked example: size, TV fit and weight

This is our own arithmetic.

  • The DrawXynth dresser is listed at 55.51 by 18.7 by 35.55 inches, though the labels say depth 55.51 and width 18.7, which are swapped; the title says 55 inches wide. Its footprint is 55.51 times 18.7, which is 1,038 square inches, or 7.2 square feet.
  • A 55 inch TV (a diagonal) is about 48 inches wide at a 16 to 9 ratio, because the width is the diagonal times 16 divided by the square root of 337, which is 0.87. On a 55.5 inch dresser that leaves about 3.8 inches on each side; the listing says it doubles as a TV stand for up to 55 inch TVs.
  • The AFLUI bookshelf is 9.3 by 47.2 by 55.7 inches, which is 439 square inches of footprint, or 3.0 square feet, on a unit 55.7 inches tall; its table gives a weight capacity of 55 pounds.
  • A tall narrow unit tips more easily than a wide low one. The AFLUI is 55.7 inches tall on a 9.3 inch depth, a ratio of 6.0 to 1 (55.7 divided by 9.3), against 1.9 to 1 for the DrawXynth (35.55 divided by 18.7).

What the listings say

DrawXynth 55 Inch Dresser for Bedroom with 14 Drawers, Chest of Drawers with Open Shelf, Fabric Storage Tower (ASIN B0FJS136WX). The table gives engineered wood, 14 drawers, one shelf and the size above. The bullets say 14 fabric drawers in three sizes, a heavy-duty metal frame with a thick wood surface, four adjustable feet and use as a TV stand for up to 55 inch TVs. Best for: a long dresser with an open shelf. Watch out: swapped dimension labels; and fabric drawers hold light items.

Mexin 6 Tier Bookshelf, 47 Inch Small Bookcase with 3 Fabric Storage Drawers, Wood and Metal (ASIN B0DHCYMZB8). The table gives engineered wood, six shelves and a size of 11.4 by 22.8 by 46.6 inches, in rustic brown, black or white. The bullets say thickened metal pipe and P2 grade MDF board, a design combining open space and cabinets, three fabric drawers and four open tiers. Best for: a narrow bookshelf with a few drawers for a bedroom corner. Watch out: the title says 47 inches and the table 46.6.

AFLUI Triple Bookshelf with 3 Fabric Drawers, 4-Tier Book Shelf and 10 Display Shelves, Industrial (ASIN B0DQBZLT5J). The table gives engineered wood and metal, ten shelves, a size of 9.3 by 47.2 by 55.7 inches and a weight capacity listed as “Maximum 55 pounds” in one row and “Minimum weight: 55 pounds” in another. The bullets say density board and reinforced steel, three fabric bins, ten open shelves and adjustable foot pads with a reinforced cross-brace. Best for: lots of open display shelving with some hidden storage. Watch out: the capacity rows contradict each other, and it is a tall, shallow unit.

Tip-over safety

The Anchor It campaign is a US Consumer Product Safety Commission public education effort about furniture and TV tip-overs. Its resources page says that as of September 1, 2023, dressers, armoires and other clothing storage furniture must meet stability standards and include anchor kits. For any tall unit, including bookshelves, anchor it to the wall studs and keep heavy items low. Check the listing for a mention of an anchor kit or the standard, and ask if it is not there.

How to choose

Decide what you store. Clothes want drawers; books want shelves; a mix wants a hybrid.

Check the load. The AFLUI states 55 pounds; fabric drawers are for light items.

Check the height and depth. Tall and shallow means tip-over risk.

Plan the anchor. Know where the studs are before it arrives.

Placement and anchoring

Put the unit where you can reach a wall stud. A stud finder is cheap, and most anchor kits use a strap or a bracket screwed into a stud through a drywall wall. Heavy items go in the lower drawers or shelves, and the top shelves hold light things, since weight low down makes a unit more stable. If there are young children in the home, treat every open drawer as a possible step and anchor every tall unit. The Anchor It page is the reference we used; it is a US campaign, and local rules may differ elsewhere.

A wood dresser and a separate bookcase

If a hybrid does not suit, the alternative is a conventional dresser plus a separate bookcase, each anchored. That costs more floor space but gives sturdier drawers; our dresser guide covers the first, and our bedside bookshelf guide a narrow bookcase beside the bed. The choice is about drawer strength: fabric drawers on a metal frame suit light clothing, and wood drawers with slides suit heavier items such as jeans and sweaters.

Mistakes to avoid

Putting a heavy TV on a fabric-drawer unit. The DrawXynth states 55 inch TVs; ask for the weight limit.

Skipping the anchor. A tall unit with children in the house needs it.

Loading the top shelves. Heavy items go low.

Trusting swapped labels. Check the real width and depth.

Fitting the dresser to the wall

Measure the wall before you order. The DrawXynth dresser is 55.5 inches long, so on a 120 inch wall it leaves 64.5 inches, enough for a door or a window on one side. Leave room in front for the drawers to open: fabric drawers on a 18.7 inch deep unit pull out by their own depth or less, so allow about 20 inches of clear floor in front (our estimate). A bookshelf that is 9 to 11 inches deep takes less floor and has no drawers to open on the open tiers, which is a reason to use a bookshelf in a narrow room.

When a different piece is better

For a conventional wooden dresser, see dresser, 6 drawer dresser and solid wood dresser. For a narrow tall unit, see lingerie chest of drawers tall narrow. For bedside storage, see bedside bookshelf.
