Quick answer
Take the whole bed weight, frame plus mattress plus sleepers, and divide it by the number of wheels. A queen frame of 41.9 pounds, a mattress of 80 and sleepers of 350 gives 472 pounds, which is 118 pounds per wheel on four wheels. The sets below state 1,400 pounds, about 1,323 pounds (600 kilograms) and both 1,400 and 1,300 pounds. The listings do not say whether the rating is per wheel or for the set, so ask. Choose locking wheels, and check that the stem fits your leg socket before you order.

How bed casters fit
The casters in these listings have a metal stem that pushes into a socket in the bed leg, often with a plastic insert that holds the stem snugly. They are meant to replace missing or broken wheels on frames that already have sockets. If your frame has solid legs with no socket, these do not fit without modification, and we do not recommend modifying a frame.
Worked example: load and height
This is our own arithmetic.
- Load per wheel. A 472 pound bed on four wheels is 118 pounds each; on six wheels it is 78.7 pounds each (472 divided by 6). If the 1,400 pound rating is for the set of four, it is 350 pounds per wheel, which is nearly three times the 118. If it is per wheel, the margin is larger.
- The ELEPFEET rating is 600 kilograms, which is 1,322.8 pounds by our conversion (600 times 2.20462); across six wheels that is 220.5 pounds per wheel if it is for the set.
- Height. The DERRILLA table gives an item size of 3.06 by 1.89 by 4.05 inches, so the caster is about 4 inches tall; how much it adds depends on the foot or leg end it replaces, and the listings do not say. Whatever it adds, the mattress top rises by the same amount.
- Locks. Four locking wheels hold a bed in place on a hard floor; two locking and two free wheels would let a bed pivot. The ELEPFEET set has four locking and two non-locking wheels, which is a choice made for six-leg frames.
What the listings say
Home’s Place Metal Stem Heavy Duty Bed Frame Wheels Casters Rollers with Socket Sleeve Inserts, Set of 4 Locking (ASIN B09S8HQ1VF). The table gives metal and plastic inserts, a weight of 0.63 kilogram for the set, a wheel width of 2 inches and a load capacity of 1,400 pounds. The bullets say it replaces missing or broken wheels, all four wheels lock, the plastic inserts fit inside the leg to hold the stem and it holds 1,400 pounds. Best for: a standard four-leg metal frame. Watch out: the load is not stated as per wheel or per set.
ELEPFEET Set of 6 Metal Stem Casters Wheels for Bed Frame (4 Locking, 2 Non Locking) (ASIN B0C9ZZC7HW). The table gives metal, a wheel backspacing of 2 inches and a wheel size of “52 centimeters”, which cannot be right for a caster; it is probably 52 millimeters. The bullets say the set holds around 600 kilograms, has six wheels with plastic inserts, will not scratch a hardwood floor, installs without tools and carries a lifetime guarantee. Best for: a six-leg frame. Watch out: the wheel size unit and the load basis are unclear.
DERRILLA Bed Frame Wheels Rollers with Locking Bed Frame Casters Replacement with Socket Sleeve Inserts, Set of 4 (ASIN B0CLXYCDDG). The table gives metal and plastic, black, a wheel width of 2 inches, an item size of 3.06 by 1.89 by 4.05 inches and a load capacity of 1,400 pounds; a bullet says weight capacity 1,300 pounds. The bullets say the stems fit standard leg sockets on most frames, the wheels roll smoothly on carpet or hard floors, all four lock and installation needs no tools. Best for: a replacement set with a stated size. Watch out: 1,400 and 1,300 pounds in one listing; use the lower.
How the three compare
| Listing | Wheels | Locking | Stated load | Other detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home’s Place | 4 | All 4 | 1,400 lb | 2 in wheel width; 0.63 kg set |
| ELEPFEET | 6 | 4 of 6 | About 600 kg (1,323 lb) | Lifetime guarantee |
| DERRILLA | 4 | All 4 | 1,400 lb (table), 1,300 lb (bullet) | 3.06 × 1.89 × 4.05 in |
How to choose
Measure the socket. The stem must fit; the listings call it standard, which is not a measurement.
Choose locking wheels. A bed that rolls is a hazard if you cannot lock it.
Check the load per wheel. Divide the bed weight by the number of wheels and compare with the rating on a per-wheel basis.
Mind the floor. Wheels on a hard floor can slide when locked if the wheel is hard plastic.
Installing and testing
Pop the plastic insert into the leg socket, then push the stem into the insert. The listings say installation is tool-free. Before you load the bed, press each locking wheel’s brake and push the frame; it should not roll. Then place the frame on the floor and sit on each corner in turn, looking for a wheel that wobbles or a stem that tilts in its socket. If it does, the insert may be too small for the socket; contact the seller.
Floors and when not to use wheels
On carpet, wheels sink into the pile and roll with effort. On hard floors, hard wheels can scratch if grit is trapped, and locking wheels may still slide on a polished floor. If the bed needs to stay put on a smooth floor, rubber pads under a fixed leg are more reliable than a locked caster, as in our non squeaky bed frame guide.
Questions for the seller
Ask whether the load rating is per wheel or per set, what the stem diameter and length are in millimeters, what size the socket must be and whether the wheel has a floor-safe tread. The listings call their stems “standard”, which is not a measurement.
Mistakes to avoid
Fitting casters to a frame with no sockets. They will not fit safely.
Using unlocked wheels. A bed can move when someone sits on the edge.
Ignoring height. Casters add about 4 inches.
Trusting a combined rating. Ask whether it is per wheel.
Casters, glides and pads
A caster rolls, a glide slides and a pad grips. Casters suit a bed you move for cleaning. Glides suit a frame on carpet that you slide. Pads suit a bed that should stay put. Choose by what you want the bed to do: if the answer is “stay put”, a locked caster is the wrong tool and a rubber pad is the right one. If the answer is “move easily”, choose locking wheels and use the locks every time the bed is in place.
When another fix is better
If you want the bed to stay put, see non squeaky bed frame for rubber feet and pads. For support under the middle of a frame, see bed frame middle support. For frames with legs, see black metal bed frame.
A sensible habit is to lock the wheels on the side nearest the wall first, then the others, and to unlock them only when you are moving the bed. If the bed is in a child’s room, use locked wheels or no wheels at all, and ask the seller whether the wheels have a safety lock that a child cannot release. We have no information on that from the listings, and a bed that rolls under a child is a hazard we would avoid.
If you buy a set to replace one missing wheel, buy a full set anyway: wheels of different heights tilt the frame, and a set of four costs little more than one. Match the stem diameter by measuring an existing wheel’s stem with a ruler, and note the socket depth.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put wheels on any bed frame?
Only if the legs have sockets that fit the stem. Check before you order.
Do bed wheels lock?
The Home’s Place and DERRILLA sets lock all four wheels; the ELEPFEET locks four of six.
How much weight can bed casters hold?
The listings state 1,400 pounds, 600 kilograms and 1,300 or 1,400 pounds. Ask whether it is per wheel.
Will casters scratch the floor?
The ELEPFEET listing says they will not scratch hardwood. We have not tested that.
How high do casters make the bed?
About 4 inches for the DERRILLA size; the others do not give a height.
Are casters safe for a child’s bed?
Locking wheels are a minimum; ask the seller about the rating and how the wheels lock.
