Quick answer

A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches per Amerisleep. The three black frames below are 7, 12 and 14 inches tall and weigh 16.37, 32.7 and 45.6 pounds. The 7 inch frame needs a box spring on top; the 12 and 14 inch frames say no box spring is needed. One listing gives a length of 76 inches, which is 4 inches short of the mattress, so check it before buying. Steel frames are quick to assemble and light to move; they give less under-bed storage than a taller frame unless you choose the 12 or 14 inch height.

Worked example: how high is the bed

This is our own arithmetic. We assume a 10 inch mattress and, for the frame that takes a box spring, a 9 inch box spring. Both are examples; measure yours.

FrameFrame heightBox springTop of mattress from floor
NOAH MEGATRON 7 inch7 in9 in (assumed)7 + 9 + 10 = 26 in
Goltriever 12 inch12 innone12 + 10 = 22 in
Amazon Basics 14 inch14 innone14 + 10 = 24 in

The 7 inch frame with a box spring ends up 4 inches higher than the 12 inch platform frame, even though the frame itself is 5 inches shorter. If you do not own a box spring, the 7 inch frame costs you the box spring as well.

The 76 inch length

A queen mattress is 80 inches long. The NOAH MEGATRON listing gives its length as 76 inches. If that is right, an 80 inch mattress overhangs by 4 inches in total, which is 2 inches at each end if you center it. That is more than the 0.25 inch overhang we saw on king frames in our king mattress with frame guide, and it can leave the mattress unsupported at the head and foot. The page does not say whether the length is adjustable or excludes brackets, so we cannot tell which it is. The Goltriever (80 inches) and the Amazon Basics (80 inches) match the mattress length.

What the listings say

NOAH MEGATRON Queen Size Metal Bed Frame, 7 Inch Heavy Duty, 9-Leg Support for Box Spring and Mattress Foundation, Black (ASIN B07BR58DXM). The table gives 76 by 60 by 7 inches, a weight of 16.37 pounds, steel and a rating of 3,000 pounds. The bullets give a 3 by 3 leg layout with three center legs, plastic gaskets at each leg, tool-free assembly in under 10 minutes and a compact parcel that fits narrow stairs. Best for: a light, quick frame if you already own a box spring. Watch out: the 76 inch length and the need for a box spring.

Goltriever 12 Inch Metal Platform Queen Bed Frame with Grid Structure, Black (ASIN B0GYF2PF1W). The table gives 80 by 60 by 12 inches, a weight of 32.7 pounds and a rating of 1,500 pounds. The bullets give a dense grid support instead of slats, mattress baffles at the head and foot, pre-drilled holes for a headboard, decorative grooved accents and no box spring needed. Best for: a platform frame that supports thin latex or soft mattresses without sagging between slats. Watch out: the listing does not state its under-bed clearance, only the 12 inch total height.

Amazon Basics Bed Frame with Storage, Foldable Metal Platform, 14 inch, Queen, Black (ASIN B073WRLNS9). The table gives 80 by 60 by 14 inches, a weight of 45.6 pounds, steel and a rating of 700 pounds. The bullets give no box spring needed, a foldable design that is tool-free to set up and can pass through doorways folded, and a platform that the title calls “with storage”. The text we read states no under-bed clearance. Best for: a frame that folds for moving or storing. Watch out: “with storage” in the title is not a number; ask what height fits underneath.

How the three compare

GoltrieverNot needed80 in32.7 lb1,500 lb
Amazon Basics 14 inNot needed80 in45.6 lb700 lb

The ratings run from 700 to 3,000 pounds, and the heaviest rating belongs to the lightest frame. That is a sign that the numbers are each seller’s own claim; none of the listings explains the test. Make sure the rating is well above the weight of your mattress and the sleepers, and treat anything beyond that as marketing.

How to choose

Decide on the box spring. Own one and want the lowest cost: the 7 inch frame. Do not own one: a platform frame.

Check the length. It should be 79.5 to 80 inches for a queen mattress.

Check the head and foot. Mattress baffles or stoppers keep the mattress from sliding; the Goltriever lists them.

Check the folding claim. If you move often, the Amazon Basics frame folds, which the other two do not say.

Assembly, moving and noise

Steel frames differ most in how they go together and how they sound. The NOAH MEGATRON listing says tool-free assembly in under 10 minutes and plastic gaskets at each leg. The Amazon Basics 14 inch frame is described as foldable and tool-free, and the listing says it can move through doorways folded. The Goltriever listing gives mattress baffles at the head and foot and a grid of metal instead of slats, but the text we read does not give an assembly time.

The weights, 16.37, 32.7 and 45.6 pounds, are the other half of the story: the lightest frame is a one-hand carry up a stairwell, and the 45.6 pound foldable frame is easier to carry folded than assembled. For a renter who moves every year, the folding frame and the lightest frame are the ones to look at; for a bed that will stay put, the grid frame offers more support.

A last check on a steel frame is the headboard. The Goltriever listing gives pre-drilled holes for a standard headboard, and the other two listings we read do not mention headboard holes. If you plan to add a headboard later, ask before you order, and see our headboards for queen beds guide for the mounting types. A frame with no holes can still carry a wall-mounted headboard, but a bolted one needs the holes.

Mistakes to avoid

Buying by color only. Black is the finish; the structure decides how it performs.

Ignoring a short length. A 76 inch frame under an 80 inch mattress is a question for the seller.

Reading “storage” as clearance. The Amazon Basics title says storage and the text states no height under the frame.

Stacking a box spring on a platform frame. It raises the bed with no benefit.

When a different frame is better

If you want a taller steel frame with stated clearance, read queen bed with platform. For a wood look, see queen wooden bed base. If you need to know which frames take a box spring, see bed frame and box spring. For the size basics, see queensize bed.

Frequently asked questions

Do black metal frames need a box spring?

It depends on the model. The 7 inch frame above is made for a box spring; the 12 and 14 inch ones say no box spring is needed.

How high is a bed on a black metal frame?

Frame height plus mattress, plus a box spring if you use one. With a 10 inch mattress the three examples come to 26, 22 and 24 inches.

Why is one queen frame listed at 76 inches long?

The NOAH MEGATRON listing gives 76 inches. A queen mattress is 80, so confirm the length with the seller.

Is a 3,000 pound rating real?

The listing states it but does not say how it was measured. Use it only to check that the frame exceeds the weight of your mattress and sleepers.

Can I fold a metal frame?

The Amazon Basics 14 inch frame is described as foldable. The other two do not say.

How heavy is a black metal queen frame?

16.37, 32.7 and 45.6 pounds for the three above.
