What to check before buying black leather footstool with storage
Start with the material. None of these three listings describes genuine leather: the SONGMICS says synthetic leather, the SIMPLIHOME says distressed vegan faux leather, and the AmasSmile says leather in its title without naming the type. If real leather matters, none of them states it.
Second, check the seat height. The heights are 13, 15 and 18 inches, with the SIMPLIHOME seat height listed at 16.93 inches. Compare it with the chair or sofa you want to rest your feet from.
Third, compare storage. The AmasSmile lists 38 liters and the SONGMICS lists 43 L (11 gallons). The SIMPLIHOME states no capacity.
Fourth, look at weight recommendations. The SONGMICS lists 660 pounds, the AmasSmile 330 pounds and the SIMPLIHOME 250 pounds. If someone will sit on it, favor the higher figure.
Fifth, consider the footprint. The three are 1.53, 1.56 and 2.01 sq ft. The first two differ by only 0.03 sq ft (1.56 – 1.53 = 0.03).
Sixth, think about setup and moving. The AmasSmile (4 pounds) and SONGMICS (7 pounds) fold, and the SONGMICS needs quick assembly. The SIMPLIHOME (13.4 pounds) needs no assembly but does not fold.
Last, read the materials. The SONGMICS lists MDF panels and a water-resistant cover, while the SIMPLIHOME lists rubberwood and plywood. The AmasSmile lists engineered wood.
Worked example: fit math for these three options
This worked example is our own planning arithmetic from the listed dimensions, not test results. The wall length and walkway width are assumed example values; replace them with your measurements.
Wall example. Assume 36 inches of clear wall.
- AmasSmile Ottoman with Storage: 36 − 13 = 23 inches spare; centred, 11.5 inches on each side before trim, plugs or curtains.
- SONGMICS MAZIE Collection: 36 − 15 = 21 inches spare; centred, 10.5 inches on each side before trim, plugs or curtains.
- SIMPLIHOME Rockwood 17″ Vegan Leather Storage: 36 − 17 = 19 inches spare; centred, 9.5 inches on each side before trim, plugs or curtains.
Walkway example. The US Access Board gives 36 inches as the minimum clear width for an accessible route. That figure is a yardstick, not a rule for private homes. To keep 36 inches clear beside each product, the walkway between it and the opposite obstacle must be at least 36 inches plus its depth:
- AmasSmile Ottoman with Storage: 36 + 17 = 53 inches of total path width.
- SONGMICS MAZIE Collection: 36 + 15 = 51 inches of total path width.
- SIMPLIHOME Rockwood 17″ Vegan Leather Storage: 36 + 17 = 53 inches of total path width.
Footprint. Depth × width, converted at 144 square inches per square foot:
- AmasSmile Ottoman with Storage: 17 × 13 = 221 sq in, or 1.53 sq ft.
- SONGMICS MAZIE Collection: 15 × 15 = 225 sq in, or 1.56 sq ft.
- SIMPLIHOME Rockwood 17″ Vegan Leather Storage: 17 × 17 = 289 sq in, or 2.01 sq ft.
Mistakes to avoid
- Expecting genuine leather. The SONGMICS says synthetic leather and the SIMPLIHOME says vegan faux leather. The AmasSmile listing does not name the type.
- Ignoring the seat height. These range from 13 to 18 inches, and a footstool that is too high or low does not work as a footrest.
- Comparing storage when one is missing. The AmasSmile lists 38 liters and the SONGMICS 43 L. The SIMPLIHOME lists no capacity.
- Assuming all fold. Only the AmasSmile and SONGMICS describe folding. The SIMPLIHOME is described as ready to use with a tray lid.
