Quick answer

With a 10 inch mattress (our example), the top of a 24 inch frame is 34 inches from the floor, and in an 8 foot (96 inch) room that leaves 62 inches between the mattress and the ceiling. The three frames, an Anyroom queen, an NKZ queen and an NKZ king, all state a height of 24 inches and 20 inches of storage space, and a rating of 4,000 pounds. Their weights are 41.7 and 46.4 pounds for the NKZ frames. The storage volume for a queen is at most 54.7 cubic feet (20 times 59.5 times 79.5 divided by 1,728).

Why people choose a tall frame

Storage. 20 inches of clearance holds tall bins and suitcases standing up.

Look. A bed higher off the floor looks like a platform on legs.

Cleaning. More room to reach under.

The cost is the climb and the headroom, and the 24 inch frame is a lot higher than the 14 or 18 inch frames in our 18 inch bed frame guide.

Worked example: height, headroom and volume

This is our own arithmetic.

FrameFrame heightTop of a 10 in mattressTop of a 12 in mattressGap to a 96 in ceiling (10 in mattress)
14 inch frame14 in24 in26 in72 in
18 inch frame18 in28 in30 in68 in
24 inch frame24 in34 in36 in62 in

A person sitting up in bed needs head space above the mattress. We have no source for the number, but 62 inches leaves enough for sitting up and standing on the bed is another matter; if you have a lower ceiling, a ceiling fan or a sloped ceiling, subtract first.

Storage. A queen under 20 inches of clearance is 20 times 59.5 times 79.5 inches, which is 94,605 cubic inches, or 54.7 cubic feet. The frame’s legs and rails take some of that. A king (79.5 by 75.5) gives 20 times 75.5 times 79.5 divided by 1,728, which is 69.5 cubic feet.

The frame uses 24 minus 20, which is 4 inches of the height for its own structure.

What the listings say

Anyroom Bed Frame Queen Size 24 Inch Tall, Double Layer Heavy Duty Metal Platform (ASIN B0GJZH154F). The table gives 79.5 by 59.5 by 24 inches, metal and a comparison grid of heights from 14 to 24 inches with under-bed heights of 10 to 20 inches, all rated at 4,000 pounds. The bullets give double-layer steel pipe, screw-lock connections with silent pads, six mattress baffles, 24 inch frame height and rear-leg headboard holes. Best for: a queen frame with 20 inches of clearance. Watch out: the page covers four heights, so confirm the 24 inch one.

NKZ Queen Size Metal Platform Bed Frame, 24 Inch Dual-Layer Heavy Duty Base (ASIN B0F9FDQNY3). The table gives 79.5 by 59.5 by 24 inches, 41.7 pounds and a rating of 4,000 pounds. The bullets give a two-in-one frame and box spring design, no box spring needed and 20 inches of storage space. Best for: the same size and rating as the Anyroom with a stated weight. Watch out: the two queen frames have identical sizes and ratings, so they may be the same product; compare the seller’s terms.

NKZ King Size Metal Platform Bed Frame, 24 Inch Dual-Layer Heavy Duty Base (ASIN B0F9FCRF78). The table gives 79.5 by 75.5 by 24 inches, 46.4 pounds and a rating of 4,000 pounds. The bullets give a two-in-one design, three reserved headboard holes in the legs, four mattress baffles, rubber feet and 20 inches of storage space. Best for: a king frame with the same clearance. Watch out: the top of the bed with a 12 inch mattress is 36 inches.

How to choose

Check the ceiling. Subtract the bed height from the ceiling.

Check who uses it. A bed 34 inches up is hard for children and some older adults.

Use the storage. If you do not need 20 inches of space, a lower frame is easier to live with.

Plan the access. Consider whether a step stool is part of the room.

Delivery and assembly

The NKZ frames weigh 41.7 and 46.4 pounds, and the Anyroom listing gives no weight in the table. A one-person carry as parts is likely for the NKZ queen. The NKZ listings describe a two-in-one frame and box spring design with a double outer frame, and the Anyroom listing a double-layer steel pipe; neither states an assembly time in the text we read. A tall frame has more parts to connect, so allow the time.

Safety for a tall bed

A bed 34 inches up is a longer fall than a 24 inch one. For adults, a step stool or a bedside table at a sensible height helps. For children, a tall bed is a risk, and the listings do not give child-safety information. If you choose a tall frame for a shared household, think about who will climb onto it and how, and keep the area at the side clear.

Matching the room

A tall bed changes the room. Nightstands look short beside it, a window sill may sit below the pillow and a headboard is less tall in proportion. Our bedside bookshelf guide covers the nightstand height question, with a mattress top of 34 inches instead of 24.

Mistakes to avoid

Forgetting the mattress. A 12 inch mattress adds two inches.

Assuming two listings are two products. Same size and rating may mean the same frame.

Ignoring the ceiling fan. It can be in the way of sitting up.

Putting a child on a tall bed. Falls are a risk; see loft beds for kids for how kids’ raised beds are described.

Matching furniture to a tall bed

A tall bed makes other furniture look low. A nightstand at 24 inches sits 10 inches below a 34 inch mattress top, so a lamp lights the pillow from below. A 30 to 36 inch nightstand, or a wall shelf, matches better; our bedside bookshelf guide gives heights. Check the wall space above a tall bed too, as in our king size headboard guide.

Who should not choose a tall frame

A bed that is 34 inches up is not a good choice for a person with a knee or hip problem or for a small child. A lower frame gives a conventional bed height. If you want storage with a lower bed, the 14 inch frames give 12 to 13 inches of clearance, and drawers give closed storage with no added height, as in our bedframe with storage underneath guide.

When a different frame is better

For an 18 inch frame, see 18 inch bed frame. For a low bed, see low profile bed frame. For king platform frames, see king platform bedframe.

If you are choosing between a 24 inch frame and an 18 inch frame, the 6 inches of extra height give about 9.8 cubic feet more space under a queen (54.7 minus 44.9), at the cost of a bed top 6 inches higher. That is a clear trade, and it is worth deciding before you order.
