Quick answer

Add the weight of everyone who sleeps in the bed, the mattress and anything stored on it. In our example, two sleepers totaling 600 pounds and an 80 pound mattress make 680 pounds. Against a 4,000 pound rating that is 17 percent, against 800 pounds it is 85 percent. A rating close to the load leaves no margin for sitting down hard on the edge. Look for a stated rating well above the load, a center support that reaches the floor and a frame that names its construction. Ask the seller how the rating was measured.

How to add up the load

People. Everyone who sleeps in the bed, at their real weight.

Mattress. Foam and hybrid mattresses of 60 to 100 pounds are common; the Avenco foam queen in our other guides is 64.2 pounds and the Ashley hybrid 68.

Extras. Pillows, bedding and anything stored on the bed.

A margin. A person sitting down puts more force on a frame than a person lying still; we have no figure for it, so leave a margin.

Worked example: ratings and margins

This is our own arithmetic. The load is 680 pounds, from the example above.

FrameRatingLoad as a share of the ratingRating divided by the load
NKZ 24 inch queen4,000 lb17 percent5.9
Zinus Rumi queen2,200 lb31 percent3.2
Merax tufted queen800+ lb85 percent1.2
AFI Concord queen800 lb85 percent1.2

A frame with a rating of 800 pounds is a reasonable choice for a lighter load and a poor margin for 680 pounds. The steel frames’ ratings are higher, but they come from sellers who do not explain a test. Use the figure as a filter: choose a frame whose rating is several times your load, then check the structure.

What the listings say

NKZ Queen Size Metal Platform Bed Frame, 24 Inch Dual-Layer Heavy Duty Base (ASIN B0F9FDQNY3). The table gives 79.5 by 59.5 by 24 inches, 41.7 pounds, metal and a rating of 4,000 pounds. The bullets say a two-in-one frame and box spring design with a double outer frame, no box spring needed and 20 inches of storage. Best for: the highest rating of the three. Watch out: the bed top is at 34 inches with a 10 inch mattress, which may be hard to get onto.

Merax Queen Size Upholstered Platform Bed with 4.7 Inch Thick Tufted Headboard, White (ASIN B0HJ2K6ZL7). The table gives bouclé, plywood, rubberwood legs and wood, 88.6 by 67.7 by 40.4 inches and white. The bullets say a curved tufted headboard, scratch-resistant bouclé, a reinforced frame with solid wood slats that support over 800 pounds without sagging and a precision-joint, noise-dampening build. Best for: an upholstered bed with a stated 800 plus pound capacity. Watch out: “over 800” is not a number; ask for the rating.

AFI Concord Queen Platform Bed with Footboard and Storage Drawers, Walnut (ASIN B00A6QVBK6). The table gives rubberwood and a size of 83.03 by 62.6 by 16.54 inches. The bullets say solid hardwood and veneers, two drawers and a weight capacity of 800 pounds. Best for: a solid wood bed with drawers. Watch out: 800 pounds leaves little margin for the 680 pound example.

Structure to ask about

Center support. For a queen or king, Nest Bedding’s warranty, which we read, requires a rigid center support that reaches the floor. Ask how many center legs the frame has; see bed frame middle support.

Slats. Steel or solid wood, how many and how thick; see bed slats.

Joints. Welded or bolted; the NKZ listing describes a double outer frame, the Merax precision joints.

Legs. Number, thickness and whether they have a base that spreads the load. The yookare listing in our extra long single bed frame guide gives 1.77 inch square legs, the sort of detail to look for.

How to choose

Do the sum first. Load, then a margin of several times.

Compare ratings as filters, not rankings. Divide by your load.

Ask for the structure. Center legs, slat material, joints.

Check the bed height. A tall frame is a high bed; a lower one may be easier.

Keep the seller’s reply. A written answer about the rating is evidence.

Getting in and out of bed

A bed’s height matters more for some people than others. A bed whose top is at 34 inches, as with the NKZ 24 inch frame and a 10 inch mattress, is a long climb for many, and a bed at 24 inches is easier. We do not have a source for a recommended height, so test it: sit on a firm surface at the height of a candidate bed’s top and see how it feels to stand. A bed that is easy to get out of is a safety matter as well as a comfort one, and a lower frame with a high rating is better than a tall one if getting up is hard.

The mattress also has a limit

A mattress maker may state a weight limit for the mattress itself, separate from the frame’s. Check your mattress’s documentation. For the combined bed, the weakest part sets the limit. Ask the mattress maker, too, which foundation it requires, since a mattress on a frame that does not meet its rule may lose its warranty; our bed slats and bed foundation guides give two examples.

Delivery and assembly

A frame with a high rating is often heavy. The NKZ 24 inch queen weighs 41.7 pounds, the Merax and AFI Concord beds are heavier and give no weight in the text we read. Ask for the weight of the heaviest carton, and have a second person for assembly. Tighten the fasteners after the first week and again after a month, as in our heavy duty bed frame guide.

Mistakes to avoid

Trusting “heavy duty” in a title. It is not a standard; see heavy duty bed frame.

Choosing by rating alone. The structure carries the load.

Forgetting the mattress. It is part of the load.

Skipping the center support. A big load on a long span needs it.

When another guide helps

For heavy duty claims in detail, see heavy duty bed frame. For quality checks, see high quality bed frames. For types of frame, see different types of bed frames.

The conversation about weight is easier when it is about numbers. If you do not know your own weight or your partner’s, use a scale; if the combined load is close to a frame’s rating, choose another frame. If you are shopping for someone else, ask them what they are comfortable sharing, or choose a frame whose rating is generous, such as 2,000 pounds or more, and whose structure is described in detail.

Finally, check the mattress. A foam mattress of 12 inches weighs about 64 pounds in the Avenco listing in our bed frame and mattress set guide, and a hybrid of 10 inches about 68. A thicker, denser mattress weighs more. The mattress adds to the load and needs a firm, even foundation, which of the listings we read is the part they describe least. Ask for the slat gap and the center support, and keep the replies.

One practical idea is to keep a short list with the load, the rating of each frame you consider and the answers the sellers give. Seeing the margins side by side makes the choice clearer than reading each listing alone, and the list is something you can show a seller or a returns desk.

Frequently asked questions

What weight rating should I look for?

Several times the load of the sleepers and the mattress. In our example of 680 pounds, a rating of 2,000 or more.

Are ratings reliable?

They are the seller’s claims. None of the listings explains the test.

Does a bed need a center support?

Nest Bedding’s warranty requires one for queen and larger.

Which frame has the highest rating here?

The NKZ 24 inch frame states 4,000 pounds.

Is a taller frame stronger?

Not necessarily. Height is not a measure of strength.

What should I ask the seller?

How the rating was measured, how many center legs there are and what the slats are made of.
