A plant holder that clips to an aquarium lets you grow a pothos or lucky bamboo with its roots in the water and its leaves above the tank. Pick one by checking that it fits your tank’s edge, that the plant fits the holder and that the holder will not slip. This guide compares six products using listing data from the listings we read, checked October 8 and 9, 2026. We have not tested any of these holders, so the fit and durability points below are drawn from the listings, not from our own use.

  • If your tank has a glass edge up to about 0.8 inch thick, the ARREBOL 2-pack lists that thickness, the only one in our list with a stated glass limit.
  • If you want a holder that adjusts for water level, the TOYEYE 4-pack lists a height range of 0 to 3.94 inches.
  • If you have a rimless or framed tank and want room for several stems, the Paalee 2-pack has seven holes and is described for rimless and framed tanks.

What to check before you buy

  1. Tank rim type. Measure the glass thickness and check whether the tank is rimless. Our list gives a glass limit only for ARREBOL (up to 0.8 inch). The ABSONE listing says it fits tanks with edges up to 6 cm (about 2.4 inches), and the Borlech listing says it has hooks at three sizes (0.4, 0.8, and 1.57 inches).
  2. Plant type. The listings say these holders suit pothos, lucky bamboo, moss, and aquatic plants. Check whether your plant is fully aquatic or only semi-aquatic.
  3. Load. Only ABSONE states a load: up to 1 pound (0.45 kg). Plants with heavy pots or many stems may be too heavy for the rest. The listings for the others do not state a load.
  4. Adjustability. Some holders adjust height to suit different water levels. The TOYEYE listing gives a range of 0 to 3.94 inches, and ABSONE says it adjusts too.
  5. Material. The listings describe ABS, polypropylene, and plastic. The listings say these are safe for fish, but none gives a test result in the listings.

Product notes

TOYEYE 4-pack (B0GYX9CWBK). Transparent square holders with adjustable hooks.

  • Pros: four pieces; height and width both adjust; the bullets say it doubles as a small basket for tools.
  • Cons: the listing describes the plastic as “premium ABS” in the bullets and plastic in the specs; no load is stated; the basket use is a secondary feature.
  • Skip if: you need a stated load for a heavy plant.

Borlech 4-pack (B0FBKVN1QN). Transparent round holders in polypropylene, with six hooks in three sizes and two suction cups.

  • Pros: the listing gives hook sizes for different glass thicknesses; it can hang on the glass edge or sit in the tank.
  • Cons: no load stated; the bullets describe the material as safe and non-toxic, which we could not check from the listings.
  • Skip if: your tank edge is thicker than the largest hook.

ARREBOL 2-pack (B0F9PZP735). Clear holders that clip on with a screw and fit glass up to 0.8 inch.

  • Pros: the only glass limit in our list; the listing says the base has multiple holes for water flow.
  • Cons: no load stated; the holder is square and small, so it suits trailing vines more than a large plant.
  • Skip if: your tank rim is thicker than 0.8 inch.

Paalee 2-pack (B0GRVCGX38). Seven-hole rim planters for rimless or framed tanks.

  • Pros: more holes than the others; the listing says the holes help stems absorb water.
  • Cons: the listing says it works with lucky bamboo and lotus, but no load is given; the 2-by-5-inch footprint is small.
  • Skip if: you want a holder that adjusts for water level.

ABSONE adjustable holder (B0GK4SV3Q5). Black ABS holder with adjustable height and hooks for tank edges up to about 2.4 inches.

  • Pros: the only load rating in our list (1 pound); adjustable height.
  • Cons: black finish is less transparent than the clear options; one size only; the listing gives a package size that differs from the item size.
  • Skip if: your plant is heavier than 1 pound with its pot.

Worked example: a 0.3 in glass rim and a 1 in trim

  • Thin glass, 0.3 in. TOYEYE adjusts from 0.31 to 2.36 in, so 0.3 in is just at its minimum. Borlech’s smallest hook is 0.4 in, ARREBOL fits glass up to 0.8 in, and ABSONE fits edges up to about 2.4 in.
  • Thick trim, 1 in. ARREBOL is 0.2 in too small (1 minus 0.8). TOYEYE fits with 1.36 in to spare (2.36 minus 1), Borlech’s 1.57 in hook with 0.57 in, and ABSONE with about 1.4 in.
  • Load. Only ABSONE states a load, 1 lb. Say a lucky bamboo set with its water weighs 0.6 lb (our example). That leaves 0.4 lb spare (1 minus 0.6).
  • Water level. TOYEYE adjusts in height from 0 to 3.94 in, so it can follow a falling water line. ARREBOL and Paalee state no height adjustment.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Guessing the rim. Measure the glass thickness and any plastic trim with a ruler. Only ARREBOL and ABSONE state a rim limit, and Borlech states hook sizes.
  • Overloading a clip. Most listings state no load, so keep to lightweight stems and tip out extra water before you lift the plant.
  • Assuming fish-safe means tested. The listings call the plastics safe and non-toxic, but none shows a test result, so ask the seller.
  • Judging size from the picture. ARREBOL is a small 3.15 x 3.15 x 2.25 in holder and Paalee is a 2 x 5 x 1.7 in strip with seven holes, so a thick stem or a large root ball may not fit either.
  • Skipping the lid check. A glass lid or hood can stop a clip-on holder from sitting flat, so check the clearance between the rim and the lid before you order.

Who should skip these holders

  • If your tank has a thick rim or a glass lid that does not allow a clip, none of these holders may fit. Measure first.
  • If you want a planted tank with substrate, a clip-on holder is not designed for that.
  • If you keep a fish that nibbles on plants, check the species before you add a plant to the tank.

The listings do not give a safe load for most of these holders.

Frequently asked questions

Will an aquarium plant holder fit my tank?

Check the glass thickness and whether the tank is rimless. The ARREBOL listing gives a limit of 0.8 inch, and the ABSONE listing gives a limit of about 2.4 inches. Most other listings do not state a limit.

Are these holders safe for fish?

The listings describe the materials as safe and durable, and some say they are non-toxic. We have not tested these claims, so check with the seller and your fish keeper.

Can I put a holder inside the tank?

Some holders can hang on the glass edge or sit inside. The Borlech and TOYEYE listings describe a hooked hanging use. Check the listing for the installation method before you order.

Which plant works best in these holders?

The listings name pothos, lucky bamboo, moss, and lotus. Choose a plant whose stems or roots can reach the water, and match the stem count to the holder’s load.
