A plant floor lamp is a standing grow light that sits on the floor beside a plant, so you can light a tall plant without a shelf or a ceiling mount. Choose by four things: the adjustable height range (the listings we read ranged from 12 in up to 76 in), the timer settings, the cord length, and the base, because a tall lamp on a light base can tip. For a plant that is 4 ft to 5 ft tall, a lamp that extends to about 60 in to 76 in is the usual match, and a lamp that adjusts down to 12 in to 17 in also works as a desk or shelf light.

Why a floor lamp instead of a stand with lights

A plant stand with built-in lights is a fixed unit with a fixed number of shelves. A floor lamp does one job: it puts light on one or two plants, wherever you want. That makes it a good fit for a single big plant such as a fiddle-leaf fig or a rubber plant, which no shelf unit can hold.

A floor lamp also looks like a lamp, not a grow rack. Many have a slim pole and a gooseneck or a flat head, and one of the listings we read uses a faux walnut finish. In a living room, that is easier to live with than a purple glow. The trade-off is that one lamp lights a small area. If you have a dozen plants, a rack with built-in lights is better.

Three lamps compared

Adjustable pole with a gooseneck (Aumtrly)

The Aumtrly lamp is listed at 7.87 in x 7.87 in x 68.9 in and weighs 1 kg (about 2.2 lb). The stand adjusts from 17 in to 61 in by turning a metal ring, and a 7.8 in flexible gooseneck carries the light. The listing mentions a timer of up to 16 hours, three lighting modes and five levels of dimming, with red 660 nm, warm 3200 K and white 5000 K light. It is white, which blends with a light wall.

Tall pole with a base and daisy chain (FECiDA)

The FECiDA listing is titled 76 in, with a height range from 40 in to 76 in using one, two or three link rods. The seller says it has 208 LEDs rated at 2000 lumens, a stable base, and a five-mode timer of 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 hours. A daisy chain feature lets you connect up to three lamps to one outlet. The dimensions in the listing table (8 in x 5.2 in x 0.8 in) obviously describe a part, not the whole lamp, so we use the height from the text. It weighs 1.2 kg (about 2.6 lb).

Telescoping lamp with a convex lens

The third listing is a smaller lamp with 24 warm white LEDs at 4000 K behind a convex lens. The pole telescopes from 12 in to 57 in, the head tilts up to 90 degrees, and the base is weighted metal. It has a 6, 12 or 18 hour timer and a 9.8 ft power cord, and weighs 1.7 lb. The finish is a faux walnut wood grain. At 57 in maximum, it suits a medium plant, a small tree, or a table.

What matters when choosing

Height range

Look at the minimum as well as the maximum. A lamp that goes down to 12 in or 17 in can be used on a table or a shelf in winter, then raised for a floor plant. A lamp that only goes from 40 in up is meant for tall plants only.

Timer

A timer saves you from turning the lamp on and off every day. Choose one with several settings, like the 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 hour options on the FECiDA. The listings do not say how many hours each plant needs, so follow the plant’s label or a grower guide.

Cord

A floor lamp needs a cord that reaches the outlet. The 9.8 ft cord on the lens lamp is the only length we found stated. Measure from the lamp spot to the outlet before you buy, and avoid running a cord across a walkway.

Base and weight

A tall pole on a light base can tip, especially around pets. The lens lamp has a weighted metal base, and the FECiDA listing talks about a stable base with no tilt.

Worked example: lighting a 5 ft plant in a corner

Say you have a 5 ft (60 in) rubber plant in a corner, 4 ft from the nearest outlet, and you want the light to sit above the plant at about 6 in over the top leaves.

  • Lamp height needed. 60 in (plant) + 6 in (gap) = 66 in. The FECiDA reaches 76 in, so it works with 10 in to spare. The Aumtrly extends to 61 in on its pole plus a 7.8 in gooseneck, a total of 68.8 in, which also works if the gooseneck is angled. The lens lamp reaches 57 in, which is too short for this plant.
  • Cord. 4 ft is 48 in. A 9.8 ft cord is 117.6 in, which leaves 69.6 in of slack, so there is no strain. If the lamp had a 5 ft cord, that would leave 12 in, which is tight.
  • Footprint. The Aumtrly base is about 7.87 in x 7.87 in, which is 62 sq in, less than half a square foot.
  • Clearance. A lamp 8 in wide next to a 20 in wide plant in a corner leaves about 28 in of corner width used.

The result: for a 5 ft plant, choose a lamp that extends to at least 66 in. If your plant is 3 ft (36 in), a 57 in lamp is plenty and a shorter lamp is easier to store.

Light colour and how it looks in a room

The three lamps use different light, and that changes how a living room feels. The Aumtrly listing names red 660 nm, warm 3200 K and white 5000 K light, which gives the lamp a mix of modes. The lens lamp uses 24 warm white LEDs at 4000 K, which is a neutral, soft white. A lamp with red and blue diodes shows a pink or purple tint that is easy to see from the sofa.

If the lamp stands where you sit in the evening, a warm or neutral white is easier on the eyes. If it is in a spare room or a corridor, a tinted light does not matter. You can also pick the dimming settings to turn the light down when guests are over. The listings do not say how each colour affects a particular plant, so do not buy on colour alone.

Pairing the lamp with a plant stand

A floor lamp works well with a low plant stand. A stand lifts the pot off the floor, so the plant sits closer to the lamp head and you need less pole height. For a 14 in stand and a 5 ft plant, the top of the plant is at 74 in, so check that the lamp still goes above that.

Placement and safety

Keep the head clear of leaves

LED lights run cooler than older bulbs, but they still warm a leaf that touches them. The listings do not state a safe distance, so check the plant’s tolerance.

Mind the cord

Run the cord along the wall or the baseboard. A cord on the floor in a path is a trip hazard, and a daisy chain of three lamps makes more cord.

Avoid bedrooms at night

The timer should turn the lamp off when you sleep. If the lamp is in a bedroom, a 12 hour setting is easier on sleep than 16 hours.

Who should buy a plant floor lamp

  • Owners of one or two large plants in a dim room.
  • People who want a lamp that looks like furniture.
  • Renters, since there is nothing to drill.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone with many small plants. A shelf with lights covers more area.
  • People with no outlet near the plant. A long cord is a nuisance.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Reading the wrong dimensions. One listing gives a table of 8 in x 5.2 in x 0.8 in for a 76 in lamp.
  • Buying a pole too short. Add the gap above the plant to its height.
  • Ignoring the base. A tall light base tips.
  • Setting the timer for 20 hours. More light is not always better.

Frequently asked questions

What is a plant floor lamp?

It is a standing grow light with a pole, a base and a lamp head, made to light a plant from above without a shelf.

How tall should a plant floor lamp be?

Choose a lamp that reaches at least 6 in above the top of the plant. In the listings we read, the maximum heights were 57 in, about 69 in and 76 in.

Do plant floor lamps have timers?

All three listings we read have one, with settings from 4 to 20 hours. Check the settings on the page.

Can a plant floor lamp replace a window?

It can add light, but the listings do not say it replaces sunlight, and plants differ in how much light they need. Follow the plant’s label.

How long is the cord?

Only one listing states it, at 9.8 ft. Measure to your outlet.
