What to check before buying laundry hamper with lid and removable bag
Start with the footprint. The SOLEDI is 16.3 by 12.4 inches (1.4 sq ft), the Lifewit is 16.93 by 12.6 inches (1.48 sq ft) and the SONGMICS is 20.5 by 15.2 inches (2.16 sq ft). The difference between the two single hampers is small, 1.48 – 1.4 = 0.08 sq ft, while the SONGMICS needs about half again as much floor area. All three are between 29.5 and 30.1 inches tall. Next is capacity and sorting. The SOLEDI is 100 liters, the Lifewit is 105 liters and the SONGMICS is 150 liters (39 gallons) split into 2 compartments with Light and Dark labels. If you sort at the hamper, only the SONGMICS does it for you. Single-bin hampers hold more per compartment but mix everything. Third is the bag. All three have a removable bag or liner. The Lifewit says its inner bag is machine washable and uses a snap buckle system. The SOLEDI describes a lightweight mesh inner bag with handles. The SONGMICS liners lift out with a foot loop. Only the Lifewit states washability. Fourth is structure and load. The Lifewit lists a load of 26.5 lbs (12 kg) and 4 reinforced fiber rods. The SOLEDI uses 4 thicker rods, an MDF bottom and a metal top frame. The SONGMICS uses 8 mm fiberglass rods and Oxford fabric. Only the Lifewit gives a number, so the others’ limits are unknown. Decision rules: choose the Lifewit for a single washable bag with a stated load; choose the SONGMICS for two lidded bins and sorting if you have floor space; choose the SOLEDI for the smallest footprint and a firmer base.
Worked example: fit math for these three options
This worked example is our own planning arithmetic from the listed dimensions, not test results. The wall length and walkway width are assumed example values; replace them with your measurements.
Wall example. Assume 36 inches of clear wall.
- Lifewit 105L Large Laundry Basket: 36 − 12.6 = 23.4 inches spare; centred, 11.7 inches on each side before trim, plugs or curtains.
- SONGMICS Laundry Hamper with 2 Lids: 36 − 15.2 = 20.8 inches spare; centred, 10.4 inches on each side before trim, plugs or curtains.
- SOLEDI 100L Laundry Hamper with Lid: 36 − 12.4 = 23.6 inches spare; centred, 11.8 inches on each side before trim, plugs or curtains.
Walkway example. The US Access Board gives 36 inches as the minimum clear width for an accessible route. That figure is a yardstick, not a rule for private homes. To keep 36 inches clear beside each product, the walkway between it and the opposite obstacle must be at least 36 inches plus its depth:
- Lifewit 105L Large Laundry Basket: 36 + 16.93 = 52.93 inches of total path width.
- SONGMICS Laundry Hamper with 2 Lids: 36 + 20.5 = 56.5 inches of total path width.
- SOLEDI 100L Laundry Hamper with Lid: 36 + 16.3 = 52.3 inches of total path width.
Footprint. Depth × width, converted at 144 square inches per square foot:
- Lifewit 105L Large Laundry Basket: 16.93 × 12.6 = 213.32 sq in, or 1.48 sq ft.
- SONGMICS Laundry Hamper with 2 Lids: 20.5 × 15.2 = 311.6 sq in, or 2.16 sq ft.
- SOLEDI 100L Laundry Hamper with Lid: 16.3 × 12.4 = 202.12 sq in, or 1.4 sq ft.
Mistakes to avoid
- Reading liters as a size match. The SONGMICS is 150 liters but takes 2.16 sq ft, while the Lifewit is 105 liters in 1.48 sq ft.
- Assuming every bag is washable. Only the Lifewit says its inner bag is machine washable.
- Overloading the poles. The Lifewit lists 26.5 lbs, and the others give no limit. Wet laundry is heavy.
- Trusting one height. The SOLEDI lists 30.1 inches in one place and 29.9 inches in a bullet. Measure with the larger figure.
