Choose an indoor plant hanger by three numbers: the pot diameter, the weight of a watered pot and the clearance below the pot. An indoor plant hanger lifts a pot off the floor and shelf, which frees space in a small room. The three macrame hangers compared here are a single 35 inch hanger, a set of two 35 inch hangers and a six pack. In a room with a 96 inch ceiling, a pot that hangs over a walking path should clear 80 inches from the floor, so put the hook in a corner or beside a window instead of over a hallway. Use a ceiling hook that is rated for the load and screwed into a joist or fitted with the right anchor.

Why hang plants indoors
A hanging plant uses air space that nothing else uses. It keeps trailing plants such as pothos or spider plants from sprawling across a shelf. Hanging pots can also keep plants away from cats and toddlers. And in a window, a hanging plant gets light without taking sill space.
The tradeoff is that hanging plants are harder to water. They also need a secure hook, and the pot is above eye level, so water can drip onto the floor or furniture below. Plan a saucer or a drip tray, and take the plant down to water it.
The three hangers we compare
Mkono macrame hanger, one piece, 35 inches
The Mkono hanger is a single macrame hanger listed at 35 inches long. The capacity field says 22.1 pounds (check the listing for what that figure covers). Pots and plants are not included. It is a single hanger, so it is the simplest option for one pot.
LEWESU macrame hangers, set of 2, 35 inches
The LEWESU set contains two hangers, each 35 inches long, and the title says it comes with 4 hooks (check the listing for exactly which hooks and anchors are in the box). The capacity field says 3 gallons, which describes volume, not weight. The set suits a pair of matching pots.
SFENNGPET macrame hangers, six pack
The SFENNGPET set has six macrame hangers. The listing gives a pot size of 6 to 10 inches. The data we have gives no hanging length for this set, so check the listing before you plan the drop. It is the set to choose if you want several matching hangers for a window or a shelf of trailing plants.
Matching a hanger to your pot
Check these three numbers before you buy.
Pot diameter
The SFENNGPET listing states 6 to 10 inches. For the Mkono and LEWESU hangers, the data we have gives no pot size, so look at the page. A pot wider than the opening of the cord basket can slip or tilt.
Weight of a watered plant
The Mkono capacity of 22.1 pounds therefore matches 22.1 pounds divided by 8.3 pounds per gallon, which equals 2.66 gallons of pure water. A pot of soil holds less water than that, but the pot, soil and plant weigh something too. Weigh your watered plant on a bathroom scale, subtract your own weight and compare the result with the listing.
The LEWESU figure is different. 3 gallons is a volume, and 3 gallons of water is 3 times 8.3 equals 24.9 pounds. So if the LEWESU capacity were a volume limit for water alone, it would carry about 24.9 pounds, which is a bit more than the Mkono. The listing does not say it is a weight rating, so do not treat it as one.
Hanging length
The Mkono and LEWESU hangers are listed at 35 inches; for the SFENNGPET set, check the listing. The cord hangs from the hook to the knot under the pot, so the pot sits well below the ceiling. If you want a pot near a window at eye level, measure from the hook point down.
Worked example: headroom in a hallway-side corner
The room has a 96 inch ceiling. The Access Board guidance used for public buildings says objects that stick out more than 4 inches from a wall between 27 inches and 80 inches above the floor can be a hazard along a path, and it requires 80 inches of headroom. A home does not have to follow this, but 80 inches is a useful yardstick. We want a hanging plant over a walkway.
- Space from ceiling to the 80 inch line. 96 in minus 80 in equals 16 in.
- Hanging pot with a 10 in cord basket. If the bottom of the pot should stay above 80 in, the pot can hang no more than 16 in below the ceiling.
- Result. A 35 in hanger drops much further than 16 in, so if the pot hangs over a path, its bottom sits below the 80 in line. So hang it somewhere nobody walks under, such as a window corner.
Now check how high a pot will sit if hung in a window corner with the hook on the ceiling. We do not know where in the 35 inches the pot sits, because the cord forms the basket, so we do not put a number on it. Hang the plant, then measure from the floor to the bottom of the pot, and check that you can move around it. If you are 70 inches tall, 80 inches minus 70 inches equals 10 inches of clearance over your head.
Hooks, anchors and joists
A hanging plant exerts a pull on the ceiling. Use a ceiling hook rated for the load, and screw it into a joist or a proper anchor. Some sets include ceiling hooks and expansion tubes, so check each listing for what is in the box. An expansion tube is a wall anchor and may not be suited to every ceiling material, so check the ceiling types it supports. For plaster or drywall, find a stud or joist with a stud finder where possible.
A hook in a window frame or a curtain rod is another option, but a curtain rod is rarely rated for much weight. Do not hang a heavy pot from a curtain rod bracket.
In a rental, check what your lease says about ceiling holes. A freestanding plant stand or a tension pole is an alternative.
Macrame care
Cotton cord can fray with time, and dampness can weaken it. Let the cord dry if water spills on it. Inspect the knots every few months, because a failing knot is a sign to replace the hanger before the pot falls.
Keep hangers away from open flame and hot surfaces. Cotton cord burns.
Styling
Light cord suits boho or Scandinavian rooms. Dark cord suits modern or industrial rooms. Mix the heights of several hangers, and group two or three near a window. The LEWESU set of 2 is good for a symmetrical pair on either side of a window.
Who should buy an indoor plant hanger
- Apartment dwellers with little floor space.
- Owners of trailing plants that look better when they hang down.
- Pet owners who need to keep plants out of reach, though check that the plant is safe for your pet.
Who should skip it
- People with low or sloping ceilings. The 35 in drop will not fit.
- Anyone who can’t reach the hook. Watering needs access.
- Renters who cannot drill into the ceiling. Choose a stand instead.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reading volume as weight. The LEWESU 3 gallons is not a weight limit.
- Using the wrong anchor. A weak anchor can pull out of the ceiling.
- Hanging over a path. The pot may hit heads.
- Forgetting a drip tray. Water drips onto the floor.
Checklist before you buy
- Weigh a watered plant.
- Measure the ceiling height and the space under the pot.
- Match the pot diameter to the hanger.
- Check what hooks come in the box.
- Find a joist or choose the right anchor.

Frequently asked questions
How much weight can an indoor plant hanger hold?
The Mkono listing gives 22.1 pounds. The LEWESU listing says 3 gallons, which is a volume. The SFENNGPET listing gives a pot size range instead of a weight. Always weigh the watered plant.
How long should a plant hanger be?
Two of the three here are listed at 35 inches. Measure from the hook to where you want the pot, and check the space below it.
What size pot fits a macrame hanger?
The SFENNGPET listing says 6 to 10 inches. Check the page for the others.
Can I hang a plant from a curtain rod?
Only if the rod and brackets are rated for the load. Most are not, so use a ceiling hook.
Where should I hang the plant?
Beside a window or in a corner that no one walks under. Use 80 inches of headroom as a yardstick over any path.
