Quick answer
A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches per Amerisleep. The three platform frames below are 12.1, 12 and 20 inches tall, with under-bed clearance of 6.25, 10.4 and 16 inches. Put a 10 inch mattress on them and the sleeping surface is 22.1, 22 and 30 inches from the floor. The steel frames weigh 36 and 42.4 pounds; the wood frame weighs 52 pounds. Choose the 20 inch frame if you want storage, and either 12 inch frame if you want a lower bed.
What “platform” changes
A box spring frame is just rails, and the box spring adds height. A platform frame takes the box spring’s place with slats. So the frame height is almost the whole bed height before the mattress. In the three listings below, each says “no box spring needed”. If you already own a box spring, you would stack it on top and raise the bed by its own height.
Worked example: height and storage
These are our own calculations. We assume a 10 inch mattress; use your own thickness.
| Frame | Frame height | Clearance under | Frame structure (height − clearance) | Top of mattress |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LIFEMENT Signature wood | 12.1 in | 6.25 in | 5.85 in | 12.1 + 10 = 22.1 in |
| Superay 12 inch | 12 in | 10.4 in | 1.6 in | 12 + 10 = 22 in |
| 20 inch platform | 20 in | 16 in | 4 in | 20 + 10 = 30 in |
The two 12 inch frames have the same overall height but very different space under them: the wooden frame uses 5.85 inches for its deck and rails, the steel one only 1.6 inches. That is the difference between fitting a flat bin and not.
Storage volume. The upper limit of the space is clearance times 59.5 times 79.5 inches (the width and length from the listings), divided by 1,728 cubic inches per cubic foot.
- 6.25 in: 17.1 cubic feet
- 10.4 in: 28.5 cubic feet
- 16 in: 43.8 cubic feet
These are upper bounds, because legs and cross bars take space, so expect less. The 20 inch frame gives about 2.6 times the volume of the wooden frame (43.8 divided by 17.1).
What the listings say
LIFEMENT Queen Bed Frame Signature Wood Platform, New Walnut (ASIN B0H5FMPFPS). The table gives 80.5 by 60 by 12.1 inches, a weight of 52 pounds, pine wood and a rating of 700 pounds. The bullets give solid wood with reinforced center support, 6.25 inches of under-bed clearance, a slat system with no box spring needed, all hardware and tools included and a mid-century, contemporary or rustic look. Best for: a wooden bed that sits low and looks finished. Watch out: 6.25 inches of clearance is enough for a robot vacuum or flat bins, not luggage.
Superay 12 Inch Queen Metal Bed Frame with Rounded Leg, Mattress Stopper, black (ASIN B0D4XX58WQ). The table gives 79.5 by 59.5 by 12 inches, a weight of 36 pounds and a rating of 3,500 pounds. The bullets give a 12 inch high frame with 10.4 inches of under-bed space, folding slats, four mattress stoppers, three headboard holes, silent sponges between slats and silicone foot caps. Best for: a lighter frame that you can carry yourself. Watch out: there is no headboard in the box, only holes for one.
20 Inch Queen Size Bed Frame, Double Layer Heavy Duty Metal Platform Tall (ASIN B0GJZ6QPDS). The table gives 79.5 by 59.5 by 20 inches, a weight of 42.4 pounds and a rating of 4,000 pounds. The bullets give double-layer steel pipes, six mattress baffles, 16 inches of under-bed clearance, rounded front legs and headboard holes. The listing also shows 14, 16 and 18 inch versions. Best for: the most storage of the three. Watch out: the listing does not show a brand in the title, and the bed is 30 inches high with a 10 inch mattress.
How the three compare
| Listing | Material | Frame height | Clearance | Weight | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LIFEMENT Signature | Pine wood | 12.1 in | 6.25 in | 52 lb | 700 lb |
| Superay 12 inch | Steel | 12 in | 10.4 in | 36 lb | 3,500 lb |
| 20 inch platform | Steel | 20 in | 16 in | 42.4 lb | 4,000 lb |
The ratings do not tell you which frame is better. The wood frame lists 700 pounds and the steel frames list 3,500 and 4,000 pounds; none of the listings says how the figure was measured, so use it only to check that it is well above the weight of the mattress and the sleepers.
How to pick
Decide the bed height you can live with. Use the table; the difference between 22 and 30 inches is 8 inches.
Decide whether you will use the space. If you will not store anything, the low steel or wood frame is simpler.
Check the weight you can carry. 36 pounds is a one-person carry; 52 pounds is easier with two.
Check the headboard plan. Two frames have no headboard; see headboards for queen beds to plan one.
Matching a nightstand to the new height
A platform frame usually sits at a different height from the frame you replace, so check the nightstand. As a rule of thumb, which is our own suggestion and not a standard, a nightstand top near the top of the mattress is easy to reach from bed. From the example above, the mattress top is 22.1, 22 and 30 inches from the floor with a 10 inch mattress.
That puts the target nightstand height at about 22 inches for the two 12 inch frames and about 30 inches for the 20 inch frame, which is taller than most nightstands you would find. If you choose the 20 inch frame, plan on a tall nightstand, a small side table or a wall shelf at the right height; our night stands for bedroom guide covers sizes.
Carrying and assembling
The three frames weigh 52, 36 and 42.4 pounds. Split between two people the loads are 26, 18 and 21.2 pounds each, which is our arithmetic and assumes an even split. The LIFEMENT listing says all hardware, tools and instructions are included, and the Superay listing says folding slats and a leg support design simplify installation. The 20 inch listing says tools and instructions are included. None of the three states an assembly time.
A last check before ordering: write the final bed height on paper and compare it with your window sill, your wall art and the ceiling fan if the bed is directly under one. With the example mattress, the highest of the three beds reaches 30 inches, which is 8 inches above the lowest.
Mistakes to avoid
Adding a box spring to a platform frame. It raises the bed by the box spring height and is not needed.
Reading frame height as storage height. The two 12 inch frames differ by 4.15 inches of clearance.
Ignoring a mattress’s thickness. A 14 inch mattress on a 20 inch frame puts the top at 34 inches.
Choosing by rating alone. See the table note above.
When another frame is better
If you want drawers instead of open space, see bed frame with storage. For wood only, see queen wooden bed base and solid wood bed frame. If you want a platform with a headboard in the same box, see queen bed frame with headboard. For the general platform comparison, see platform bed frame.
